National Preparedness Day is April 30

Throughout April and May communities around the nation will hold preparedness events, including group discussions, drills, and exercises. There are tools and resources available to help implement and amplify those efforts.  There are several things – easy, basic but important measures – that we can do this weekend while we are at home.

 

• Create or update a family emergency communication plan. Visit ready.gov/prepare and download Be Smart. Take Part: Create Your Family Emergency Communication Plan. Collect the information in the checklist, decide on the places you will meet in case of an emergency, share the information with your family, and practice your plan.

• Download and update the FEMA app on your smartphone and tablet.  Our FEMA app just got a refresh. Update your FEMA app and check out the new reminder feature allowing users to receive safety and preparedness tips.  Make sure you get everyone in your family to download the app too.

• Gather important documents and keep them in a safe place. Have all of your personal, medical, and legal papers in one place, so you can evacuate without worrying about gathering your family’s critical documents at the last minute. I don't think have FEMA app on the phone is a good idea. Too easy to track the phone.

I installed the app and it looks pretty good. You can get alerts custom tailored for up to 5 areas that you choose.

This is interesting, like a throwback to the 50's of preparedness plans and drills. I do find it funny that the govt now wants you to be prepared, but if you are too prepared, you could be a dangerous threat.

I am guessing that after Katrina they changed their attitude. If you look at their suggestions they are pretty extensive. I guess prepping has gone mainstream.

Hey all following up.

 

you would be surprised at the level of effort we put into self-reliance. That is the number one goal here, for every person to be a Emergency Manager for their families and friends.

 

Have a plan. Have a backup plan. Practice it. What failed... what worked. Repeat.

 

Being self reliant is not being a prepper, its about being a good citizen.
