Why We're Doomed

Recommended Posts

I attended a birthday celebration yesterday for my mother in law. I knew I'd be outnumbered but I wasn't quite prepared for the utter zombification I encountered.

I knew my bro in law (a very successful scientist) leaned liberal, and that my wife's uncle (a very successful NYC lawyer) was a semi-socialist, but the things they said really surprised me. None of Hillary's many faults, lies, or scandals mattered to them. You're all familiar with these indisputable facts so I won't rehash them here. Everything that is open public record was either right wing propaganda or irrelevant or "the Republicans' fault," including the high crime rates among certain demographics. They sat there with condescending smiles like I was the world's biggest idiot.

Both were for free trade even though the scientist was fired not once but twice from his pharmaceutical company and replaced by Chinese in China. Uncle "Bob" haughtily stated that "we don't want" manufacturing jobs we want high tech jobs. No answer to the question about the tens of millions of people who are unqualified or uninterested or incapable of computer programming or becoming biomedical engineers. To these elitist liberals anything that they don't want for themselves or their spoiled brat kids, anything WE DON'T WANT, nobody wants.

I asked if he ever took one of the side roads through upstate NY on his way to his lakeside dacha in Vermont, and witnessed the devastation caused by the hemmorhage of manufacturing jobs. "No." Or if he ever did a day trip to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, where oxycontin addiction has replaced gainful employment for a good percentage of the population. "No." Or the Mohawk Valley, or the Rust Belt, etc. etc. "No."

The world, everyone's world, does not exist beyond their world.

To illustrate how clueless they are, during a brief sidetrack on guns I asked "Uncle Bob" (a serious, categorical gun-banner) why he has summered in a state with no gun laws, how he could expose his children and grandchildren to the inevitable violence caused by gun possession, for the last 25 years. My equally anti-gun brother in law, who skis in Vermont as often as he can, interrupted "Vermont has some of the strictest gun laws in the country!!" to which Mr. Brilliant Lawyer responded, "No, I'm pretty sure they allow rifles because I've seen them on racks in trucks. Maybe they were going hunting."

I'll spare you the futility of arguing with them about some of the other buzzwords of the left.

These are the people who run this country, who influence others (including children), who vote. This is what our once-great nation is up against in the upcoming election.

Which is why I say

Sadly I think your assessment is accurate, particularly for NJ. Hopefully the millions of "normal" folk throughout this land can balance out some of this numb-nutz mentality, but I don't know how when the idiots are non-stop active in trying to change us for "the better".

Sadly I agree with you. And the dumbest phrase I've ever heard from someone is "people in NJ shouldn't be able to carry legally, there's way too many people congested in this state"

I just shake my head and walk away.

So you met Bob Viden.

I heard that for 35 years. Remind them that handguns don't shoot 100 miles in congested areas, it's 50 yards tops. And there is no place in Jersey that has more people in 50 yards or is otherwise any different than dozens of places around the country where people carry guns and there are no problems. There is simply nothing unique in Jersey about any single place that people are grouped together.

I'm new here, did they pass a law against nasal decongestant spray?  :onthequiet:

It's the ones who carry ILLEGALLY he should worry about, not we law-abiding ones. Problem is too few who are able to carry legally!!!!!!

Next time I take a trip back to Detroit I will let you know and maybe I can take the whole clan with me and they can see the Democratic utopia that exists  there. I am thankful I grew up outside of the DMZ when I lived there.

Newtonian.   Your self-loathing, white-guilt laden relatives would vote for Hugo Chavez if he was running.   I wouldn't worry about these drones.  Just laugh at them. Tell them they are spectacularly ignorant for as "educated" as they say they are.  Then have a drink and laugh at them even more obnoxiously.  It may enrage them... which is the best outcome you could hope for in that encounter.

One more thing... the best victories are those where you thought had the least chance of success.  Think about that.

OMG the world is going to end.

Meanwhile overall gun laws in the country have been getting demonstratively better for the past 25 years.

But we are all doomed. Well, NJ may be doomed, but I think it started that way.

Like Newtonian, I have some politically liberal relatives who have held similar anti-gun beliefs. Thankfully, they have been willing to have a reasoned and thoughtful discussion with me to hear and consider all sides of the various pro and anti-gun arguments. Over the past couple of years I have found that the best way to demonstrate my pro-gun arguments as well as to demystify guns for them, has been to invite them to join me at a gun range, (indoors for handguns and outdoors for shotguns), so they may experience for themselves what it is like to fire a gun, either at a paper target or sporting clays. For my wife, sister and brother-in-law, I have even given them gifts of paid private lessons with an experienced, trained and patient instructor so they learn the gun handling basics, starting with gun safety. At this point, they all have a better understanding and appreciation of guns and have started to modify and evolve their previous stand and are more accepting of guns in our society, with some reservations. It is a start of a trek down a long path that may or may not result in their agreeing fully with my beliefs but has fostered a better consideration and respect for those of us who enjoy guns for sport as well as for the concern for protection of oneself and family.

Once again, Vlad G. makes a very astute and succinct observation, that I agree with.

It always seems worse than it turns out to be with some time and historical perspective.

FWIW, I am not going to hold my breath that the existing gun laws will be repealed in the state of NJ, but am encouraged that at least some recent progress has been made by NJ’s state government with their finally starting to realize just how draconian NJ gun regulations are and their taking small, baby-steps to ease them somewhat.

While this topic may have already been discussed in another thread, if deserves to be reiterated. Specifically, the early April announcement by the acting NJ State Attorney General Robert Lougy that the Governor, through executive action and announcement by the AG’s office, was moving to clarify the vague portions of NJ’s gun transportation laws. Lougy stated that the new transport guideline would "provide uniformity across the state" and provide "additional clarity to police, prosecutors, and law abiding gun owners."

We have known that NJ residents may transport a firearm that is unloaded and properly stored in their vehicle, if they have a NJ FPID card, but without a carry permit, to and from their home and business, hunting, shooting ranges, gun stores and while moving between residences.

Paraphrasing, the existing NJ law allows, but does not define, "reasonably necessary" deviations in the course of the direct travel between one’s home and a gun range or store. As such, many people interpreted the law as prohibiting someone carrying a gun in their vehicle to stop to fill up their vehicle with gas or even use a restroom on the way to and from their home. The executive action now cites some examples of deviations that now qualify as "reasonably necessary" and include "collecting and discharging passengers; purchasing fuel, food and beverages, medication, or other needed supplies; using a restroom; contending with an emergency situation; or driving around a traffic jam."

They finally recognized that prior to this; we lawful gun owners faced very severe criminal penalties if we did any of these actions that are considered normal and legal in all other states, (as far as I am aware….).

(I know.. way too long for Zeke to read.....oh well)

Just wait. What goes up eventually comes down. It's been a good run indeed. But as soon as we're out-voted it's over. The new Supreme Court, fashioned in Queen Hillary's image and likeness, will also contribute.

I have tried to engage liberals on this topic for 25 years. My arguments have never caused anyone to budge. The closest is my daughter, but that's because she married a hillbilly from Alabama. I've offered the range thing, provided statistics, forwarded articles. They know guns are bad like I know my telephone number.

My parents are anti-gun for religious reasons, so I grew up same way. Wasn't t till a year ago i visited my uncle (out of country) and he had a handgun so i was curious and start asking 'bout it by the time he was done i knew i had to get one. But it took me like 5 months to convince my wife to let buy one. And finally about a month ago i bought my first gun . Now while i was going thru the process for the permit i was always talking about it at work, and now my work mate and my boss have applied for the permit as well. My wife has change her mind too, soon she'll be going with me to a shooting range and by then ill have my 2nd handgun so by hearing and talking to others we have change ours views!!!

We're NOT doomed. The political landscape has looked bleak for decades but hopefully we are at a turning point.

Gun rights have greatly expanded throughout the majority of the country the last two decades. We appear to be experiencing an "American Spring" where voters are starting to wake up. Trump fever has spread across the country and citizens are sending a message to the establishment. They are tired of the lies, BS and business as usual. Clean up or be thrown out. If I had to guess, we'll be seeing more and more non-politicians running for office in the near future.

And if our country is "doomed" we have guns and planning skills. We are prepared. WE arent the ones who should be worried if "doomsday" comes.

And if our country is "doomed" we have guns and planning skills. We are prepared. WE arent the ones who should be worried if "doomsday" comes.

As I've written before gun rights have been the only positive development during the last three decades. Free speech is on its way out. We're tracking closely with Europe with regard to overly broad prohibitions on "offensive" speech, writing, and even beliefs. The Supreme Court has gutted the 4th amendment (searches). We have secret, extra-legal courts to deal with "terrorism" and that answer to no-one. Dennis Hastert was convicted not of molesting children but of "layering" savings withdrawals. Hell, I got a letter last year from my bank, citing some strange law, because I was using my ATM too frequently.

Good article on how we've abandoned constitutional government: http://bit.ly/1rtcqm9

Have you heard a single presidential candidate this past year talk about smaller government and lowering taxes? Those have become dead-letter issues.

Comedians won't go near college campuses for fear of being black listed for "offensive" jokes. We've become infatuated with providing wedding cakes for lesbians and transgender bathroom "rights." Our entire civil discourse is dominated by myths -- Black Lives Matter being only one example. Our children are brainwashed from grammar school. Our universities are hotbeds of loony left wing propaganda.

Given this climate, and the in-pouring of foreigners with no concept of liberty, I do not believe the Second Amendment will survive much longer. Our next president recently gave a speech for gun control in which she asked, "how can we let a small minority [gun owners] dictate to the rest of us?" That's a paraphrasal but it shows what we're in for. We are, actually and in terms of numbers, a minority. And as you know "democracy" is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

Forum contributors living in gun-friendly states keep saying "it can't happen here." I would have said the same about the various left-wing pathologies that have overcome us. But dammit it's happened. Guns are next.

I didn't think you'd be offended, just thought the wording and it's interpretation could be misconstrued. I support your views, as you saw.

Glad you were able to see the humor, and yes, I've had some laffs at the postings at times myself.

Fight the good fight!

Are you convinced that "she" is the one? I'm hoping like crazy you are mistaken. You seem to have a real brain, and to be able to use it well, from what I see you posting here and there, so I don't WANT to have you be wrong about stuff, but please, not this. Even her closest competitor would be better, that ancient gent.

Please, tell me we still have a chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!
