Sports Authority to Close Nationwide

Recommended Posts

Yes, they announced they are done, Hooray!  This is what happens when all you sell are Yuppy Libtard Sporting Goods.  Hey I still have some ammo from them with the sales sticker still attached.  Maybe I should post a picture or two.  Think there is any interest as a collectible? Probably not.  I know bad joke.

One down, one or two more to go! Sorry to say another 15.000 nationwide out of work.

I went to our Paramus one a yr/2 ago. They had a token hunting/ammo section and a few safes. I think I had more ammo than they did. Only loss is the jobs. They also just opened a new store last yr in Ramsey/Mahwah. Nice planning.

Nice planning?

What kinda moron opens up a store literally 10miles from the Paramus location when the company was clearly doing poorly for years. Better yet, with a Dicks and Ramsey outdoor right in between.

Says they are going to auction stuff off. Could be a good chance. That's how I got my first safe many years ago. Can't even remember who, maybe Leslie Edelman's or Navy Ams when they closed.

You guys are cheering lots of people going unemployed. I am all for supporting 2A and I didn't really shop at SA after they stopped selling gun stuff, but not because that offended me, but because they had nothing I wanted.

They have been nearly broke for a very long time, and I suspect they stopped selling guns and ammo because it made them no money, not because they were on some social justice crusade. Cheering the closing of a retail business strikes me a bit like watching Rome burn and being happy that the streets are getting cleaned in the process.

Actually, they did stop selling because they were under the anti gun pressure. As for a place that was worthy after the anti gun charade, the stores I went to were always disheveled, had nothing in stock and nobody that cared. By you saying that we are cheering that people are unemployed is BS. Not every business can survive but most of what they have done, they have done to themselves. There is NO reason a place of business should stay open because they feel bad that people will be unemployed. People will survive and with any luck, somebody else will take over with a new business profile and make the locations a better employment opportunity.

Don't confuse happenstance and political pressure. The anti gunners have always pressured stores, SA didn't cave in because of a particularly harsh effort from what I recall. My guess is they did the math. I'm willing to bet a box of .22 that their accountants looked at the math, decided they selling guns and ammo was not profitable, and then the decision makers decided to can it and then decided to say they are doing it because of nobility and love of their fellow man. And why not? It isn't as if they were going to get the kindness of gun owners once they stopped selling that stuff, might as well try to get other people in the store.

Also cheering the loss of thousands of jobs is almost always a dumbass thing to do. Yes business fail all the time, and I'm not proposing that we should rescue them, but this is kinda like when our opponents wave the bloody shirts after a mass shooting.   The employees that work an hourly wage at these places have almost zero effect on what the company does. When they see you cheering their job loss over a policy change that likely predates them being employed we kinda look like assholes to them.

I swear the lack of second order thinking skills and out ability to shoot ourselves in the foot in the court of public opinion is unequaled.

Gloat privately if you must, but consider the public message. "Ha-ha! you suck cause you didn't want to sell me my shit and now you are broke, ha-ha!" or "That sucks, sorry to hear some people will lose their jobs, maybe understanding your demographic and not abandoning a section of the buying public would have helped, better luck next time".  Those are very different way of saying the same thing.

Also, WTH happened with private enterprise being free to sell whatever they want or don't want? You would cheer someone not selling a cake because of the customers bedroom preferences but not cheer someone not selling guns or ammo if they think that is against their beliefs? WTF?

I used to go to SA for 12GA target and hunting loads, clay pigeons. bought some throwers there and and other sundries for waterfowling and clay busting.  Once they stopped selling what I wanted, I stopped going.  Maybe it was the antis, maybe it was the mountain of regulations they had to deal with in NJ.  Probably a combination of the two.  In the end, I'm still shooting and they are gone.

They ceased to be the "Authority" on sports long ago, and I question the hubris of naming yourself in that fashion.

Their business model has confused me for quite a while.  I went in to purchase a hunting and fishing license this year and they discontinued that as well.  Ok - drive around the building to Walmart...  They were practically as useless (to me) as Modell's.

They didn't stop selling guns and ammo here. The one near me had a very knowledgeable and friendly FFL. They had good prices on some things.

Sometimes I didn't even go to the gun counter over the last year. I'd just walk inside and ask the nearest teenage girl at the front counter, "Got any .22?" They would know the answer.

Can't agree with you here on several grounds.  If you are going to be a big box store you need to sell all the components that fit in the category.  People are going to your establishment for price and selection as you generally don't offer great service.  If you can't get what you need it is not worth making the trip.  That means even if you aren't making much money on .22LR you still stock a little but don't dedicate lots of square footage to it.  That in part is why places like Channel and Rickel's died when Homedepot entered the market.  Although HD is now going down the same rat hole.  I know when I really need stuff I am better off traveling further to go to Lowes and they actually have stuff in stock.

As for people losing jobs I don't think anyone is cheering for that.  One could actually just as easily argue the other side of that point.  A failing business does not have the ability to pay top wages, so by the store failing those employees will be forced to get new jobs hopefully with a profitable company that will actually pay them more.  So, this failure could be viewed as a positive thing for those employees in the long run.

WTF makes you think we are cheering job loss? Another one of your misplaced perceptions twisting what people do or say..... Get real dude.

It is a perception game, when you are cheering the folding of a large retailer, you are implicitly cheering the lay offs. It is a bad position to take and you need to think of the second order effects of your statements and actions.

Ok, yea sure. Here is one for you. Go find a closing store, stand outside, offer jobs to the poor slobs losing their jobs. Effects? Statements? Actions? I guess its my fault. Egadz! You are insane.

You know what? You sound like some of those millennials that go boo hoo and think their problem should be other people's problems.

When I lost my job, I expected nothing from anybody. I was raised to be super independent. I blamed nobody, I asked nobody, nor did I cry on anyones shoulders. Btw, it also sounds like this PC BS and I don't fall for that crap either. I will not bend my words or thinking because of comments like yours. These people will endure like others.

If they are smart, they'll start thinking ahead. If not, they lose and people like you will come with the shovel to bail them out. Or us taxpayers will. Either way, shit happens, deal with it. But I will not feel sorry because its life and life goes on.

I got better things to feel sorry about. Self centered lazy people are not my list. Sounds like you should live out on the west coast.

Have a nice day. I have no more to say on this matter.

Nope, but I'll definitely call you out on calling those people losing their jobs "poor slobs."

What makes you so high and mighty to say anything towards those people, who likely had no part on their stores closing up? Do you know every SA employee that is losing their job, and can pass that judgement on them? I stopped going there for the fact that most stopped ammo/firearm sales, but people still worked there for a reason... to earn a living. You tend to see a lot of retirees working at sporting goods stores... some to keep busy, but a lot to make up the difference with a pension, if they have one. I feel bad for them (human nature), because it does suck to lose a job, but calling them "poor slobs" is a scumbag move.

For as much as I don't like Dick's (their firearms policies, and the plastic tote for ammo), they are putting it out there in commercials that they are hiring for those that lost their job. No love for their corporation, but that was a very good thing to pay money for airtime and broadcast. If the Bass Pro opens off the Parkway, there will be some positions for those laid off... but that is some time away.

I was being sarcastic as a result of the post I replied to. Poor choice of words I suppose, but the point is/was you can't feel for everyone that has issues.

Me? High and mighty? No way! I live my life the best I can. I expect nobody to side or even like me and I'm fine with that. I spent too many years fending for myself and trying to help people. People need to use their heads. If they need help, they can ask. Enough with the coddling and pussification in this country.

Second order effects?  You are sounding like Nancy Pelosi telling us we need to give more unemployment insurance and more handouts because those people will spend all the money and improve the economy. BS!  Guess you have never heard the expression when a door closes a window opens.  Often times the loss of a job turns out to be a blessing in disguise as you find an even better job down the road, I know I sure have.  A failed operation on life support is not good for anyone, not even the employees.

Roger that.

People have to want to help themselves, but a SGT in the NJSP told me that you should treat everyone with respect. You never could know the life some homeless guy on the street could have lived...

Reason why I took offense to it. Disregard my post, then. ✌️

Poor slob was an expression from many moons ago. I wasn't trying to degrade anyone. Your SGT friend is right. Peace out!

Yep, you guys are confirming the worst stereotypes I can think of when it comes to gun owners. And I'm looking at you Mr Bhunted.

First, you are calling people names left and right acting like an uneducated idiot. Good job there.

Secondly, your first post involved cursing out a whole company simply because they didn't sell something you wanted. I'm guessing you don't like free markets, but bitch about freedoms.

Third, when confronted with a different opinion, you foam at the mouth and accuse the person opposing you of somehow being part of the opposition because they hold a different opinion.

Fourth, your understanding of how arguments are perceived in the real world are sadly lacking. You have no understanding of how you are perceived and you don not seem to care, right up until you are challenged and then bristle at how people perceive you.

You sir, please get off my side. You are not helping gun ownership. But you won't so failing that, welcome to my ignore list.

Zero chance. They are going to go to liquidation. Which means liquidation specialists. The only thing they do well is sell 5 year old stuff for more than MSRP of this year's model. Things that don't sell like that wind up in bulk auction, which won't be useful to you or me.

There's nothing wrong with Sports Authority. At least around here.
