Authorities scour New Jersey town for escaped inmate

Published May 05, 2016

Dozens of law enforcement officials scoured a southern New Jersey town Wednesday, looking for an escaped inmate who has been on the lam since Tuesday morning.

Arthur Buckel, 38, escaped from a section of Bayside State Prison located near Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Cumberland County. Police believe he was trying to make his way to Berkeley Township, where a distant relative is said to live.

However, the search for Buckel continued into Barnegat Township Wednesday, some 60 miles north of the prison where Buckel escaped from.

“He is going to be found. He is going to be apprehended,” Barnegat Mayor Jon Novak said at a press conference Wednesday. “My suggestion to you (Arthur Buckel) is to surrender to law enforcement immediately. Make it easy for everyone, including yourself. You are going to be apprehended either way. Surrender Mr. Buckel."

NJ.com reported that authorities have chased down at least 50 dead ends in the search. Sgt. Jeffrey Ryan said in a press conference that officials are investigating every call from residents. Ryan said that Buckel could be holed up anywhere from a boat to a vacant home.

Ryan said at a midnight press conference that there was a possibility that Buckel is “no longer in town.”

Buckel is considered dangerous and residents are urged to lock their doors and cars as authorities continue to search for him. Ryan also urged residents to report any suspicious activity.

According to NJ.com, Buckel is a convicted criminal with a laundry list of offenses. He was most recently convicted for aggravated assault and burglary in January. He would’ve been eligible for parole in less than three weeks if he hadn’t escaped.

He was discovered missing during a 6 a.m. bed-check.

Buckel was last spotted at a CVS Wednesday morning in Barnegat, driving a stolen 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. The truck was registered in Hammonton where the manhunt began Tuesday.
