A few weeks ago the guys from Modern Materiel got in touch with me, they wanted me to check out their rifles. They ended up coming to the range during one of our SWAT drills and brought two of their rifles for us to try out. (As well as a couple of tricked out Glocks with some very well done mods - stippling and slide work.)

 

 

All of my guys got a chance to put some rounds downrange through them. They were all equally impressed, and a few guys plan on picking one up.

 

They shoot as great as they look. For the price - under $1k - they have some great features -

Magpul Fixed Carbine Stock

Magpul MOE grip and Trigger Guard

 

Their in-house brake is very soft shooting. A little blasty to the sides, but as a shooter, you don't feel anything.

 

Not to mention they are NJ Legal from the word go. No extra expense getting compliance work. Even better, an FFL doesn't need to register this as an assault rifle in their book prior to making it legal and completing the sale.

 

That day the rifles ran flawlessly. Between the 15-20 guys at the range that day we probably put about 300-400 rounds through each of the 2 carbines without a hiccup.

 

Now, I don't have a long history shooting one, so I can't speak to long term reliability, but - I am saving up to buy one as a range gun. When I do, I will shoot the ever-loving crap out of it and keep a detailed log. I expect to be pleased.

 

Currently, I would recommend these rifles to anyone in NJ looking for a nice range stick for under $1k. I don't know about recommending one for duty-type use yet, but, like I said, I am going to buy one and find out.

SROC avoid the Stag. I have seen way too many fail. There are much better options out there for the price.

Anyone ever order a pre assembled upper or lower through spikes? I started looking into this route instead of a straight up build from scratch. Is there any brand or type to stay away from on their site, or certain ones that are superior over the next?

I've ordered two from Spikes, both with the enhanced lower parts kit. One is the Punisher and the other is the standard Spikes spider.  Love 'em both. The only drawback is the wait time for most models, it could be 6-8 weeks.

The lower is the serial numbered part in the AR15 platform, so all must be serial numbered by the manufacturer when it is made.  When you purchase one from out of state, by federal law, it must be sent to a FFL in the state you live in.  To do this the FFL must provide a copy of his current license to the sending FFL,  When the local FFL transfers it to you, you must provide two types of ID one being a FID the other usually a DL.  You will complete a Federal 4473, a NJ COE, have a NICS check done, and pay the FFL for the NICS check and his transfer fee.

Some people are paranoid about non-compliant uppers or having things like unmounted stocks unpinned for 30 minutes while you're working on putting the gun together.  Some people may opt to have an FFL do compliance work, but most people who build an AR realize there aren't too many NJSP SWAT teams waiting for you to bring that non-compliant stock inside the house for more than 3 seconds.  The only thing you may need to visit an FFL for (other than for your lower) is if you need a comp pinned onto your upper...everything else you can probably do easily at home with a drill, hammer, and dremel.  If you are really uncomfortable, you can ask your FFL if you can ship/bring the upper to them for compliance work, but I can assure you that everything besides the pinning is easy.

Makes sense. When it comes to compliance on an AR platform for NJ is there a site that really lays out what will need to be modified in order to meet our state restrictions? Other than skimming through the statutes?

A semi-automatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following:

 

This means that if it is a semi-automatic rifle and has a detachable magazine it can have ONE of the following features and still be legal, but if it has two or more, then it would not be legal.

 

 

(1) A folding or telescoping stock;

(2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;

(3) A bayonet mount;

(4) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor;

(5) A grenade launcher

 

Example

1) An AR15 (which is a semi automatic rifle that has a detachable magazine ) with a pistol grip. LEGAL

2) An AR15 (which is a semi automatic rifle that has a detachable magazine ) with a pistol grip AND a flash hider. ILLEGAL

It is also important to observe the minimum length a firearm can be.

• A semi automatic firearm may not have a capacity greater than 15 rounds.
• A semi automatic shotgun may not have a capacity greater than 6 rounds.

You may not ever posses a magazine for a semi automatic firearm that exceeds these limits, not even while modifying them to a legal limit.

The magazine must be modified before it reaches your hands. You may also not have a magazine that exceeds NJ legal capacity in the form of a "kit" or disassembled in pieces.

Browsing through their site on complete uppers, I see they do not have any with a longer barrel than 16 inches. Ideally I would like to do 2 builds, one with a 16 inch barrel and one with a 20. I suppose I can do the upper through spikes but would need to source the barrel through a different manufacturer.

Id recommend RRA (rock river arms) for the 20".

How would the colt 6920 compare to the expanse m4 ce1000? I am having trouble finding the 6920 for a fair price (anyone know of a local ffl who may be able to help?)

The Colt Expanse does not use mil-spec components (for the most part), and is build by a 3rd party contractor for Colt.

 

The 6920 is far superior to the Expanse.

I would do a 6920 and be done with it and I don't think you would regret it for quality, accuracy, reliability which are the 3 primary drivers.
