build or buy? with high end name brands 308

Recommended Posts

ok guys I'm trying decide if to buy or build a AR10, my main concern is quality! I will like to spend around $1300. I have never built one but I think I can do it with some youtube help lol I would like it to be somewhat  accurate at long range. I have the time however I don't want to spend 2 or 3 months either.  I have a ruger precision rifle that I love but now I'm ready for a semi automatic. I know it won't be as accurate as the ruger but I would like it to to be lol, by the way I am a newbie at this! Last weekend I tried my father-in-law's new mp15 and I think it feels cheap. This is just so u guys know how picky I am when it comes to quality. I want something that doesn't feel lose or anything like that. So guys should I try and build one or should I just go and buy one?!? everything most be good quality.  Thanks! any good brands?

$1300 high end name brand?

I'm building a high end name brand DPMS pattern LAR308, Spikes upper and lower set cost me $400, $60 for Armalite Ar10a LPK, $350 for a JP BCG on sale,

I still need:

Barrel ~400

Stock/buffer kit~200

Trigger~200

Handguard ~200

Muzzle brake

IMO, if your able to build a high end .308 platform AR for under 2k you did good.

Do you have the tools required to complete a build?

High end name brand AR10's are beaucoup bucks.  For that matter so are high end AR15's.  With AR10 everything is way more money.

I don't think 1300 buys the MP10 or the Wyndham AR10.

Not sure you will find "high end for $1,300.  Maybe double to triple that.

When I wanted a .308 AR there were only two brands that kept coming up as top of the heap for accuracy (snipershide)

LaRue OBR 7.62, PredatOBR 7.62 or PredatAR 7.62.  THe 'tOBR is also now available in .260

GAP-10

My friend has had good results with the Sig

1300.00 is going to be a hard price to build or buy a 308 Ar. I did an Aero Precision 308 and all high end parts and without sights or optics Iam at the high end of $2800.00 bucks.

Aero M5 upper and lower

Mega 16 cut down to 14.5 barrel

AAC muzzle brake

KAK dual extractor BCG

Slashes heavy buffer and spring

Geissele S3G trigger

Wilson Combat rail

Magpul SL stock

BCM gunfighter charging handle

BCM Mod3 pistol grip

Aero Precision LPK/bolt release/ take down and pivot pin

Magpul mags

Seekins ambi selector switch

Norgon ambi mag release

SLR adj gas block

Magpul sling

Noveske QD end plate

And topped off with Magpul Pro BUIS and a Trijicon MRO mounted on an ADM QD mount. The sites and optic are not listed in the build price.... yeah shes short and blasty but lots of fun......

Slashes heavy buffer and spring

Geissele S3G trigger

Norgon ambi mag release

Seekins ambi selector switch

Wilson Combat rail

Strike Ind forward assist and ejection port door

Magpul SL stock

BCM Mod 3 pistol grip

BCM Mod 3 charging handle

Personally, I think building a .308 AR is a pain in the butt, regarding part compatability.

I bought a Colt LE901, had it made NJ compliant, and called it a day.

I don't think it's as much as a precision rifle as many mentioned previously, but it more than suits my needs out to 600m.

The 16" barrel is short enough to make getting in and out of my ranch truck easy, but velocity suffers at longer ranges.

Added bonus is the conversion kit that allows you to use a 5.56mm AR upper on it. 2 rifles in one.

The LE901 was an ideal choice for me, but your mileage may vary. It is worth a look.

Mine was $1900 a few years ago, but newer versions without the full quad rail are a bit less expensive.

That's cool to know, I've never heard of a conversion kit like that. Thanks DT.

Yep, it's a pretty ingenious design by Colt. It's main problem is that it is a proprietary system.

Parts have to be sourced through Colt.

The conversion kit, IMHO, make it worth the drawback.

I can pack 1 pelican case with the LE901, the conversion kit, and a 5.56mm upper, and have both calibers available for use.
