Eotech HWS – experiences and requesting advice

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I own 2 eotech HWS (xps2-0 and xps2-2) and am curious if anyone has experienced thermal drift issues with their sights. Long story short, I have noticed that my eotechs will not hold zero from range trip to range trip. At 100 yards I cannot hit a 12”wide by 14” tall (guesstimate) steel torso when aiming at center mass. When I co-witness the eotech and foldable irons I can clearly see that the eotech zero has changed. Both my eotechs have this issue and sadly the newer one has a bigger issue with thermal drift than my older one. I never noticed the thermal drift issue until I joined cherry ridge and was able to shoot at 100 yards regularly when I used to only shoot at 25 yards.

Which leads me to my question.

Has any1 pursued legal action against eotech in NJ? Or is there a class action lawsuit in NJ? I am sure ppl have heard or seen http://www.eotechlawsuit.com/ and am wondering if anyone has contacted them or similar attorney/law office ect.

I know they have a refund/repair but this is a HUGE issue and I believe they should not get a free pass by using their refund loophole.

Extra credit question.

What is everyone using in place of an eotech? IE a 1x sight.

I have an XPS 2 which is in and out of my truck everyday so it experiences temperature fluctuations as well as bouncing around. There has been no noticeable drift in my particular unit for the 3 or 4 years I have had it. I do have BUIS co witnessed so I would notice if there was without firing it.

I have a 512 and doesn't have any trouble at all. The problem with the temperature fluctuation were at very extreme conditions, extreme enough that you won't be outside shooting anyway. It's really a non issue for me but that doesn't fly with military specs.

If you are seeing that big of fluctuations with yours it could be the mount, they tend to come loose with vibration. Make sure the screw in the mount has some light thread lock.

EOTech can suck it. They knew about the problem and never reported it until they had a "fix" they wanted to sell to the USG. They put the lives of military and LEO on the line as well as the public the protect.

http://soldiersystems.net/2015/11/27/the-l-3-communications-settlement-with-the-us-government-over-fraud-charges-stemming-from-eotech-holographic-weapon-sights/

According to this paper work, the known/concealed Eotech zero drift, due to temperature change, was as much as 6 MOA in the carbine/rifle optics, and up to 12 MOA in the support/indirect fire weapon optics.

Parallax shift at 32 degrees Fahrenheit was 12 MOA, and at 5 degrees Fahrenheit it was 20 MOA. It doesn't go back to its original zero when the temp returns to where it was zeroed at. These are not extreme conditions.

My understanding is that any temp change affects the optic. The larger the change the larger the instant effect it has.

But, the small changes are stackable - a bunch of small changes back and forth that can occur from the high to the low end of reasonable weather can have the same cumulative effect on your zero as one large shift over time.

Either way, everyone that states "mine hasn't broken" or "mine hasn't lost zero" needs to add one word to their statement - "yet".

This is an inherent design flaw in every EoTurd out there. One that the company has admitted to. This isn't someones opinion that there is an issue; this is verifiable, repeatable, measurable fact.

Personally, I won't settle for mediocrity and refuse to use an optic that will enhance a chance for failure. For many people - Military, LEO, Armed Citizen - This is a safety issue.

Some of us carry guns with optics on their rifles for a living. We don't get to decide to stay home on hot or cold days or we need to keep rifles in hot cars/trunks while we are working on 100 degree days.

Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt.

Looking for a replacement - Aimpoint is the answer.

i got mine refunded at full retail. much more than i paid for it.  Then moved on to other options, never had a problem with the sight just didn't like how they did business.

Same here. Full refund plus shipping. Then I went out and spent the refund on an Aimpoint T1.

Same here as well. Never noticed an issue with my 517. Bought an Aimpoint PRO with the refund.

There was a class action and they will give you a full refund for the sights.  If you send it in with proof of purchase they will refund whatever you paid.  If you don't have paperwork they will refund the retail price based on the date of your serial number.  I bought a gun that had an 11 year old EoTech on it that I paid $200 for, they cut me a check for $400 for it - great deal!

Had an XPS 2 mounted on a 9mm Beretta Storm.  The combo was great - once the XPS was zeroed I could punch nearly the same hole at 25 yards all day long.

Then I put it in a safe for 3 months, and took it out again.  WAYYYY out of zero, barely on the paper at 25 yards.

No big temperature variations, no big physical shocks to the sight that I know of, didn't take it off and re-mount it - it went from zeroed at the end of one range session to barely on paper at the next.

Was happy to send it in for recall/refund after that experience, but I still miss that big sight picture.

HighE's secret of the universe #783:

Opening both eyes while using a red dot sight will open your field of view completely giving you an "entire world" sight picture and remove any tube effect.

;)

Yeah, I know (and I appreciate you trying to drop some knowledge). But the HWS's are nice in that the reticle is visible over a much wider angle range of "eye to sight  center axis".

This is exactly what i am experiencing.  Shoot, adjust, gun sits in storage for a month, repeat. I have to adjust or kentucky windage it to connect with steel at 100.  This past weekend i was too lazy to adjust it as it will just happen again...

True - You have a larger "window" to locate the reticle with an EOTech which can be more forgiving in unconventional shooting positions.

That being said, I have never had a problem finding the dot in a T1 or PRO regardless of the shooting position.

Additionally, the extended battery life of the Aimpoint and the lack of the auto-shutdown feature inherent in the EOTechs more than make up for the smaller "window".

WTS my like new Eotech EXPS2-2. Selling only because ive moved onto a LPVO. It shows a build date of 2016 on the box. I bought this from someone in 2018 and it's been to the range with me 4 or 5 times. I ran the serial # through Eotech CS and came back legit.  It works and looks brand new. I just put new batteries in it. This is the quick detach model which allow fast on/off the gun with a return to zero. Come with factory box and registration card. Any question please ask!. Can ship on your dime or meet up in Monmouth County near Marlboro

      This is my shocked face.

Of course people will still defend their choice in optic - no one like to admit the have an ugly baby - hopefully this will keep new purchases from disappointing recreational shooters and endangering people that carry rifles for a living.

In "unrelated" news FBI HRT has switched to Aimpoints.

So i finally got to take "Krystal", my Umbrella Corp. build to the range yesterday. Robs609 and my self helped Firearms Training Sepulveda Firearms Training film some instructional videos at Shooters last night. While Robs609 got to shoot her more than i did, i was able to pop off a few rounds and give a quick test to the Umbrella Corp BCG and SSA trigger i installed yesterday. Rob, Kharis and myself agree... the SSA Trigger is where it's at! So much smoother and tighter than the Spikes Battle Trigger i had in there before.

shot about 50 rounds w/no FTF or FTE with the new Umbrella BCG. More info on that after i get some more trigger time on her.

anyway, here are a few photos and vids from yesterday.. check out that muzzle flash! lol

Thanks to ROBS609 for being our designated shooter for the videos.

      anyway, thought we would share!
