Go for the highest NRR possible while as slim/light as possible?  Not sure if it's more for pistols vs rifles... I have a pair of Peltor Bullseye 7 NRR27 DB Passive muffs that work really well for regular pistols.  I double up with plugs under the howard leights for indoors shooting.
