Carbine length bolt action .308s?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Recently, I picked up a 7.62N converted Chilean 1895 Mauser cavalry carbine. I should have done more research beforehand, because it seems that a number of the conversions were spotty at best and it's not recommended to shoot them. Two different gunsmiths have looked at it and deemed it safe to shoot, but to stick with low powered surplus/handloads, so I plan to shoot it, but sparingly.

However, I do like the overall length (37") and the idea of a carbine bolt gun with iron sights appeals to me. Does anyone have any recommendations for any modern production bolt actions that might be worth checking out? The Savage Scout 11 looks nice, but it's around 40".

Pic below, it's the 1895 I got.

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle 308WIN. Seems to have all your qualifications. About 37 inches long, iron sights, muzzle brake capable, detachable magazine feed,  Not cheap, but a beast.

On the other hand I like my Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 300 BLK with a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7X32BDC and a 3 port brake, about 38" overall. Great brush gun for 30 cal pills from 110 to 220 grain.  Wish I had one in 456SOCOM. Working on that.

I don't think there are any Milsurps capable of shooting .308 however there are plenty that were converted to safely shoot 7.62 NATO. Personally I prefer .30-06 which there are even more safely converted to shoot. The Madsen was designed to shoot .30-06.

Remington still offers a .308 w/ 16.5" bbl., but sans the iron sights.

Or find a used Remington 600:

They also offer Model 7s with an 18.5" barrel, but I've not heard good things about Freedom Group Remington.

The Remington Mohawk 600 in .243 was my first deer rifle. The Mohawk did not have the vent rib barrel like the standard model 600 did.

I wish I still had that one.
