590 Shockwave, NJ legal?

Recommended Posts

From  Ammoland on the 590 Shockwave.

"Disclaimer: Although the Mossberg 590 Shockwave is classified as a “firearm” under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), and is not subject to the provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA), state and local laws may be more restrictive. Even though, it is legal federally, the 590 Shockwave may be considered a “short-barreled” shotgun or “assault weapon” by certain state and local laws; and therefore illegal to possess. Please check with your local authorities concerning the legality of possessing a firearm of this configuration."

It is not manufactured with a shoulder stock so it is not a NJ shotgun. If it is a smooth bore pump handgun (not semi-automatic so no weight maximums). But it fires a cartridge over .60 caliber which is only valid in a shotgun (which this is not) so doesn't it become a "Destructive Device" which is not NJ legal?

YES, according to the NJSP FIU as told to me back in 2004. Long story.

"Sawed-off shotgun" means any shotgun having a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length measured from the breach to the muzzle, or a rifle having a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length measured from the breach to the muzzle, or any firearm made from a rifle or a shotgun, whether by alteration, or otherwise, if such firearm as modified has an overall length of less than 26"
