Red Dot Sight recommendations wanted

Recommended Posts

So for Christmas my son bought me a mounting plate to put a red dot sight onto one of my Beretta 92fs handguns.  The butthead said that would be about the only way I could out-shoot him with my old eyes :)

I've researched what I could find and like the Vortex Venom and the Burris Fastfire III, but are there others I should consider?  I need something that can handle the stress of being mounted on a handgun slide, and I don't want to pay more than I need to  and also don't want to buy junk.  The Vortex seems to go for about $229 and the Burris a bit less.

What say the experts?

Vortex is legit. I have had it mounted for about a year on a 17 MOS and have shot it and carried it CCW without fail. I wouldnt hesitate.

HOWEVER...No money on object thing the RMR IS the standard to what they should be. I have a shit ton of those. Dont let people tell you otherwise. I have had at length discussions on the phone with other NJGF members about this and would be happy to do the same for you. PM me.

Not all of us can afford the RMR. I have the Burris Fastfire III on my 92fs. Takes a bit of getting used to finding the dot in the site picture but really helped my aim. Old eyes and cataracts starting in my right eye wont let me focus on the sights.

I bought a Burris Fastfire iii and mounted it on my Glock 19 using a $25 mounting plate that goes into the rear dovetail.  I works perfectly and does not drift at all.  I have used the gun for USPSA carry optics, IDPA (NFC) and Knockdown steel.  Probably have about 1,000 rounds through it with the sight and have not had a single issue.  Sure you can spend more, but you have to figure out what incremental value are you getting for the dollar.  BTW for a pistol unless you are doing long range bullseye shooting I would suggest a 6-8 MOA dota as they are much quicker for your eyes to acquire than a small dot.

I have your setup, Beretta M9 with a fastfire (and other mods). Works great, but gets shot very little. I would be happy to show you the gun whenever.

I'm a SCFGPA member and a RTSP member, and usually go to one of those ranges weekly. Bring ammo!

Thanks.  But for what I'm looking for the RMR is more than I care to spend.

Greg,

Thanks.  I live 5 minutes from SCFGPA and would be happy to supply enough 9mm to keep us busy for an hour.  If the offer still stands PM me if you head there some Saturday or Sunday morning.

Love my Berettas - the RDS will be going on a two-tone Inox that I've done a little work on.

Dean

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.
    • I saw Lara's interview on Bannon's War Room, and that gave me pause for thought. Her conjecture depends primarily on the veracity of her sources. Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
