Displaced Texan 11,652 Posted January 29, 2017 I bought a 2014 VW GTI recently, and I found this doohickey under the dash. What the hell is it? Driving me crazy (pardon the pun). Any clues?
TR20 47 Posted January 29, 2017 I am no car expert but it looks like one of the sensors used by insurance companies. They monitor and record driving style then get pulled and sent to the insurance co. They can base rates on this. Progressive Insurance (yea, right name for them!) uses them a lot. Otherwise, I am at a loss for answers.
intercooler 41 Posted January 29, 2017 looks like a chip or program controller or tracker of somekind
Displaced Texan 11,652 Posted January 29, 2017 It does have a wire that goes up behind the dash. I can press the little green button but it doesn't do anything that I can ascertain. I don't think it's one of those insurance trackers, those usually plug into the OBDII port. Could be a performance chip controller, but have never seen one like that. Displaced Texan 11,652 Posted January 29, 2017 Disconnected it, and no change in the way the car runs. No CEL. Has a 3 wire connector on it. No identifying marks. More pics.

Displaced Texan 11,652 Posted January 29, 2017 I think Johnny B solved it! You da man!! I'll work on removing it, as VW already has an immobilizer system built in. Thanks!

It is a digital flux capacitor--a very big upgrade over the Mr Fusion version. Your car is capable of time travel. Alarm?

TOMMY R 24 Posted January 31, 2017 Some car dealers install a lockout system if financed miss a your payment shuts you down, then they make you pay a fine to be able to restart and use your car. It's super shady but legal
