AK parts kits

Recommended Posts

What is the deal with them ? How much does a receiver usually cost and where is the best place to get them ? Is this any good ?

AMD 65 Hungarian $319 less the receiver.

The stock will need to be pinned and looks painful.

check out ak-builder.com

building an AK from a parts kit is far more difficult and involved than assembling an AR...  you'd need a variety of tools, jigs, a drill press, and a hydraulic press to get it put together correctly.

if you go for it, make sure you get one already bent up and properly heat treated.  If i remember correctly, we can't build from a receiver flat in NJ...

Fatty covered most of it.

A few things to add. There are multiple companies making receivers but Nodak and Childers will be your most prevalent. Milled are a different story but AMD's don't have milled receivers so that's irrelevant. You cannot build from a flat in NJ. That AMD you posted will be nice but I would opt-out of the 16" barrel.and get a 12.5" barrel with the extended AMD brake to reach 16". That's the way the original AMDs are built and going through the work of building it, do it right. I'd also suggest grabbing a Hungarian fixed rear trunnion and replace the folding stock with an akm stock. Not only is it more comfortable, it will allow you to use a variety of stocks if you ever want to change it out versus the AMD sidefolding metal stock in which you'll have to weld open but also be stuck with. As far as I know, no one makes an adapter for the AMD folding trunnion. Actually I think one company does but it's for another side folding stock. If you don't have any of the machines to build it, buying them will be an investment but you will most likely build more so it will work out. If you have a friend with a machine shop that will help you immensely. Plus machine shop guys could lend you a hand if you get in any trouble. I will say it is a bit overwhelming to build an AK if you haven't before but take you're time and research it before you do and you'll be fine.

If you check out the AK section on this forum, someone here did a build a few years ago and recorded the whole process.

OR...  you could contact Jim Fuller at Rifle Dynamics and sign up for one of his builder classes.  I've always wanted to sign up but it's pretty costly

The PSA kits have the receiver parts already riveted. That is the extra work you would have to do for the kit you linked. But, with the barrel already populated, you could legitimately do the riveting with the Toth tools. And the parkerizing already done is a nice bonus.

You would need to press out the barrel, rivet the front and rear trunnions, rivet the trigger guard and press the barrel back in. The rest is your standard compliance work on the muzzle device, bayo lugs and stock. I don't think you need a full set of jigs or hydraulic press for this kit.

As far as price, there are Hungarian kits with original barrel and no receiver priced for $200  more than your link ($510 or so) on other forums. But Dres made a lot of good points on the barrel and the stock, and I'd agree to keep looking for other sets.

just a note on the PSA kits, theres been some serous QC issues with those so far, like bolts not closing on empty chambers etc.

it looks like classic is intending you to rivit that assembled front into a receiver, without depopulating the front trunion

I can't see bucking the rivet against the barrel. With the barrel in place, the rivet will swell against the trunnion and receiver and then into empty space outside the receiver. The head would never seat against the receiver correctly.

And looking back at the particular barrel now in the Classic kit, the ESS barrels are very soft. In a test of foreign and domestic made barrels, ESS 4140 barrels measured a 5 RC versus most barrels coming in around 26 RC.

A kit with a prepopulated barrel could be doable with minimal special tools, but again, look for another.

My first AK Parts Kit Build was with the AMD65 kits from Classic.  Mine has about 7,000 rounds through it still no problems.  I opted to put the standard akm rear trunnion on and a fixed stock.  I have since built 9 more AK Kits and im building another this Saturday a Romanian AIMS74 kit for a friend and pinning the folding stock to open.  If i were you i would look into getting a Romanian G with the original barrel or getting a Polish surplus kit not the new ones.  Both are good builds.  Nodakspud has good receivers but they are prone to rust and should keep oiled. You can build your own better than you can buy one from IO, PSA, or Century.

    • Just a heads-up for anyone who might also be in this situation. I joined USLS mid-April of 2022. Some time after renewing for 2023, I changed email providers, and dutifully reflected my new address on my account page. So, I have been anticipating renewal alerts at my new address, but those never arrived. I logged in to my account the other day, and was surprised to see that my subscription expired that same day. I went to my account main information page, confimed that my email address was correct, then went to the billing page, which showed my previous two payments, but which did not give me any apparent way to pay up for the new year. I requested support using the Customer Service form on the web site, but received no reply. Today I called their support number. Apparently changing the email address from my view of my account page did nothing to change the address that they use internally for billing purposes, including expiration notifications. Maybe they also use that address for replies to the support form, even if a different email address is entered there. Also, my account was set up to auto-renew and charge my credit card without my intervention, but that setting did not show on my account page in any obvious way. So, if you have USLS and have changed your email address since you last renewed, you might want to give them a call to ensure that they send renewal information to your correct address. The prospect of having legal coverage lapse while carrying in NJ was, for me, a less that confidence inspiring experience. I will note that the telephone-based customer service was excellent.
    • F*n imbeciles. They know damned well (or should) that, even if passed by the Colorado Senate and signed into law, virtually that entire load of crap is certain to fail Bruen/Heller scrutiny, and probably sooner, rather than later (SCOTUS). What a monumental waste of time (of course, how much can a dip$h*t's time be worth, anyway?) and energy. I passed through Colorado a few times in the 70s, and visited some clients there in the 80's & 90's, and, even by the end of that period, I had the impression that it was politically fairly conservative (with a few exceptions such as Aspen). WTF happened?
