Gotta look up the law, IIRC they are not legal to carry, but ownership is o.k.

In my car, I carry a field hockey stick that I picked up for $2 at a thrift shop. Seems like it would make a good beatum stick.

Not legal in NJ to carry,  I belive you can have one in your home but what good is that. When I was working full time as an animal control officer I could carry one as a "bite stick" to fend off an attacking dog but we're told we could not use them for self defence if a person attacked us. Fucking NJ.

my car and truck each have a baseball bat and ball. never know when a game might pop up.

Especially those mini ones given out to kids on bat day at games. Nothin' like a "Louisville Slugger". Old golf club and bucket of old golf balls fit right in too!

If you are talking ASP Baton, you use to have to get certified via a course. Usually sanctioned by ASP. Unless things change, you still do. I got certified long ago. Still carry mine in my truck.

From what I've learned, an ASP is a no go.

Oddly, something flexible vs solid is legal from what I know.

IE, a whip, and flexible slap MAY be legal.

But, as usual, officer digression overrides all of that.
NJ ... go figure.

Black jacks, slap jacks are no go. As I mentioned, ASP Batons require certification.
My old, (pre 1980), black jack currently sits in my PD's museum cabinet.
