Recommended Posts

Seems most of them are gone but figured it could be fun reminiscing

Birch Hill (Retirement Community) - Skid Row, Dio, Kid Rock amongst others. Closest to my house.

Fountain Casino (Banquet Hall) - Twisted Sister

Garvey's (Still There but no more Rock Bands)- TT Quick

Stone Pony (Still There) - Queensrÿche

Birch Hill - Rollins Band (at least 4 times), Goldfinger, God Lives Underwater, Rancid, Bad Religion, Operation Ivy, Live, Reel Big Fish

The Saint - Soul Coughing, Social Distortion

The Aztec in Seaside - 7 Minds

Maxwells - Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr, Lemonheads, Hole, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Pixies, Fugazi, Nirvana, Hole, Archers of Loaf. I saw Mike Doughty there right before they shut the place down.

There was a dive bar in Long Branch across from the Library on Broadway near 7th we used to go to all the time and see "Psychedelic Oven Mitt"... I can't remember the name of the place...

Club Bene- Warren Zevon, Marshall Tucker Band, Nuclear Assault w/ Dave Dipetro from TT Quick

Tradewinds- Collective Soul

I ended up a subcontracting with Dave DiPetro around 2010 when he tried his hand at contracting. He had a scumbag partner who didn't like to pay their bills. Ultimately Dave paid me his half of what was owed (took almost a year) and his scumbag partner filed bankruptcy. The TT Quick and Nuclear Assault royalties weren't paying very much lol. All in all he isn't a bad guy and is a great guitarist. He also taught Zack Wilde how to play guitar in Marlboro, NJ.

I couldn't even list how many bands I've seen at the birch hill. Seems like I was there every weekend for a couple years. Static X and mushroomhead stands out as a favorite.

Seen many at starland. My favorite is a nonpoint/skindred co headliner. Damn that was a good show.

Went to ozzfest in 02 at pnc bank

Last one was a nonpoint show in Asbury Park a couple weeks ago.

I seen a Norma Jean and Killswitch Engage show in a small place in Amboy that I don't recall the name of.

Ahh...memories of Birch Hill...saw Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, In Flames and a few others that I can no longer recall there.

Saw Pro-Pain at a local place that I can't remember

happy to to say that I saw Pantera (among others that we DGAF about) at Ozzfest in Camden, I think it was called the tweeter center at the time.

I remember hearing about some place in Clifton but never made it to a show there before I moved out of the area. Is that place still there?

Right after college, I became good friends with my best friend's great uncle, we called him "Uncle Matty".  He worked as the treasurer for the stage hands union at the meadowlands (IATSE), and he always needed computer help from me.  As a side benefit, whenever they needed extra help I got to go and work the concerts.  We unloaded the trucks and setup the stage, hung out wherever we wanted to during the show (including back stage), then tore it all down and loaded the trucks after the show.  So over the years I have worked:

ZZ Top
Van Halen (I setup Eddie's amp rig, and Sammy was hanging out with us very laid back)
Bruce (what a paranoid douche)
Billy Joel
Paul McCartney
Elton John
Gloria Estefan

I'll bite since we can't talk about guns anymore...

One of the best showsI ever been to was at club Krome in south Amboy, I think it was in the late 90's. It was one of the first shows Agnostic Front played when they reunited. First time I ever saw them and it was amazing, changed everything music related for me.

Got to hang out with them after the show for a bit and got invited to another show at some dudes house in North Jersey a few weeks later. That was pretty awesome to, Biohazard and H2o were there. Not really a big fan of either but it was still good.

High Exposure,

How was Fugazi? Always wanted to see those guys back then just never got to.

During the 1980's I was one of the ones who set up the broadcasts form the capitol theater to WNEW when they were  broadcasting the shows. Saw most of the bands that preformed. Back to back weekends seeing the Black and Blue tour( Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult) and then the Outlaws and Molly Hatchett is probably why I am wearing hearing aids today.

I think that you're taking about Murphy's Law either that or The Brighton Bar. Going to see The Dictators at the Brighton in Aug. Should be a great show.

Agnostic Front used to rehearse at the studio I owned on Staten Island. They were a great bunch of guys. Do you also remember their other band Madball.

No better place to be a rock fan or in a band than NJ in the late 70s early 80s. There was chicks drinking at 18. (Although the trail of tears up kinderkamack rd to make last call in NY at 4 was deadly) clubs everywhere, good tunes.

Im a north jersey guy so:

hole in the wall

mousetrap

mothers

tatoos

butterfields

The practice studios in Saddle Brook on Midland Ave

in NY but close enough,

Manhattans

The OL

Im talking about bar bands although I was friendly with TT Quick and may have opened for them at Manhattan's once.

What a scene. Could never be again.

@Walt of Destiny you still in touch with any of the TT Quick guys? They had a reunion show in Freehold I think 2 years ago. Dave DiPetro was a born again Christian. Curious how he is doing. He wasn't a bad guy, his partner on the other hand doesn't want to run into me. Funny thing is the partner was a big church going guy himself. Guess he missed the sermon on thou shall not steal.

Not since the oughts, unfortunately. I had heard he had some issues in business like you mentioned, but he had also gotten a raw deal from the one album. Only a handful of guys left still at it. Lodi was a big band town for a little burg. Glenn Danzig is the only one from back then still at it. Oh and Continental Crawler...

it seems like a different life altogether. Feel old.

Now be nice. Socks were all the rage back then. Hot and cold running chicks.

Remember, yeah man, Madball all is my favorite band. Riggs is the greatest drummer ever besides Mackie. Don't really like the new drummer but Madball is the only band I will go to a show for now, and maybe Sick of it all.

I forgot I had this. It's in the guest room closet, I haven't put it back up yet after the move.

My buddy and I go to Birch Hill to see our favorite band Rollins Band. My buddy finds a backstage pass sticker slapped on one of the monitors and we bluff our way past security after the show. We hang out with Henry and the band for about 30 minutes. All awesome guys. Henry rips 2 concert posters off the wall and signs them for us along with all the band memebers, gives us two of his protein drink things, shakes our hands, and gets on the bus.

Apologies for the crappy photo.

I'm going to date myself here... but anyone remember City Gardens in Trenton? That place was both weird and fabulous --- a great spot for new wave and punk bands in particular. My first time there, I was struck by 2 things: 1) it was the only club I'd been to that had an armed guard (ummm... I'm guessing because of da bad 'hood?); 2) they had a lively mosh pit. I saw a guy take a header right into a wall. Ouch! He must have been awfully drunk, because he simply shook he head, spit out his front teeth on the floor, looked up, gave me a big wink and a bloody, toothless grin... and continued stomping away! Certainly one of the more interesting crowds I've ever seen... more entertaining than the bands sometimes.

I also frequented the Stanhope House a number of times over the years... they attracted not only great local blues bands (Billy Hector(?) as I recall was really good), but some big nationally known acts too. Surprising really, since it was such a tiny hole in the wall. I'm not sure if they're still in operation...? Probably, the place was something of an institution.

Were you going there when Jon Stewart was a bartender Mrs Peel? There is a documentary about City Gardens that looks interesting called "Riot on the Dance Floor". City Gardens was closed by the time I was at Trenton State.

If he was... I don't remember him! LOL. Yeah, I've heard of that documentary but never saw it. I should see if it's rentable - that would be a trip down memory lane.

Oh, and btw...

thanks for reminding me that you're a younger pup than I. Sheesh!
