Firing range rules/laws?

Recommended Posts

If you have a FPID they are comfortable that you've had a background check.  If you are female they will let you rent.  However, with men it's a suicide prevention tactic.  I'm not sure how effective it is but more and more ranges are not renting to men when not accompanied by a friend.

So just tell them you self identify as Female and if they won't rent to you then you charge them with some left wing bias charge and make lots and lots of money in the socialist people's republic of New Jermany :)

I'll try that at my next trip to GFH.

If you bring your own firearm but also would like to rent another, most will allow you to do that.....

I am a member of Garden State Shooting Center.  If you are alone and want to rent a gun, you must bring along one of your own guns.   Otherwise it is a no-go, even if you have a FID and are a member. If all I plan to shoot during that session is their rental gun, I will take one of my long guns with me so I can go wherever I want traveling to/from the range without concerns of “unreasonable deviations”.

Besides being an insurance thing, after numerious instances of a single person renting a gun and then committing suicide many ranges started to implement this to prevent and discourage that.

The requirement is from the good idea fairies at the insurance companies.  The insurance companies forced ranges to accept this policy or be dropped.

This is their method of trying to combat range suicides (ie payouts).  Single males most likely to commit suicide, no gun for you.

I first saw this ~10 years ago in Az. During a business trip, I figured I'd spend an evening at the range.  No go.  Guy explained why they had changed their policy.

I am currently traveling weekly to Atlanta for a work project. Just learned there is a range not far away from my location.  Am looking forward to visiting the range in a few weeks.  They even rent full auto firearms. I do plan to call them this evening to see if I can show up alone.

As was just said these are BS rules that will not stop someone that wants to kill themselves.  With out much thought I can come up with a couple of ways to do this.  Just walk out onto the range, most places don't have locked doors and ask someone if you can try their gun or just grab one.  Want to be less noticeable, well here is one that has been done before - make believe you are a new shooter and sign up for a lesson with an instructor.  When they hand you the gun, well you can do your thing.  There are many other ways around this, but bottom line these are just feel good rules forced by the Left.

Ever time this comes up I always go back to my youth.  There wasn't any such thing as a rental gun in NJ in the 1970's.  You got your card(s), bought something, and showed-up to a range to shoot it.  Then you learned how to make friends.  It was easy to do cause ya didn't have a 4G telecommunications device to peer down at!  Friends let their friends try their gunz.  So you bought a few that you shot well and kept "the system" busy by mentoring other friends yourself.  Viola!

If it were up to me (obviously it's NOT), unescorted men with USPSA and/or IDPA membership cards (Bullseye, High Power, etc., etc.) showing a national classification would get you the ability to rent a gun if you showed-up to my range that I own.  Cause to get ranked you need to own guns & show-up at private clubs to shoot to maintain your rank and/or advance in rank.  You already have access to your own guns thereby significantly reducing the chance that you'd off yerself at my establishment.  Sort of like bringing a .22 pea shooter & not getting it dirty to prove you own guns so you can rent.  In other words, since nationally ranked competitive action shooters (and all other organized gun sports shooters) are often better at gun handling than your average LEO, their member cards ought to work like a Leo's "Badge-Americard" IMHO!

That all being said, I can understand why the commercial ranges have this policy.  But there's nuthin' stoppin' ya from putting down the G-Damn phone & wearing a sammich board sign that reads, "Need a shooting partner" around yer neck by the front door.  A mentor like me would gladly take you under my wing :)

Renting to females by themselves but refusing to rent to males alone won't fly for long. They will either have to rent to everyone alone or no one. What if you identify as neither. CA it is now an option on your drivers license. I believe NY has gone just as crazy. NJ won't be far behind.

Well Dave, as they say times change.  Five years ago when I got this crazy idea I might want to get a gun I didn't know jack shit about guns.  Some might say that is still true today, but that is neither here nor there :)  Anyhow I did not know anyone that had a gun or shot a gun and I did not know this forum or any forum on this topic existed.  I did not know you existed or would guide my way.  I grew up in Manhattan and guns were things bad people and cops had.  So I went to the oracle of all knowledge, YouTube, and watched a video on how to shoot a gun.  Actually I probably watched 10 hours of them.  I then went to the indoor facility about 10 minutes from my house and nervously walked around looking at the hundreds of implements of death they had in the show cases.  A nice woman behind one of these counters asked if she could help me and I did not even know the questions to ask.  She explained that I could rent a gun and try it out.  Wow, I thought that would be great to be able to try something and see if I really wanted to do it before buying.  So, I did just that.  No forms to fill out, no special ID, no nothing.  So that is how I got to where I am today.  Had that not existed I probably would not be here, would not own "a" gun nor have perused things further. Had I had to find a friend to shoot with I don't know where I would have started because I did not know of anyone that had a gun.  Wait I actually had a boss a while back that hunted and I thought he was a crazy nut job as he talked about a safe he had with like a dozen hunting rifles.  Back then I thought that was crazy, why would anyone "need" 12 guns.

Bottom line this policy is bad for the future of bringing new people into gun ownership in the culture that is the socialist people's republic of New Jermany.

What's a matter Howard, no sandwich board, lol?  No "News & Briefs" bi-monthly news magazine on the gun counter for free w/ all of that info on member clubs & contact info?  Look, I totally get it.  But there are ways to find gun owners, matches, forums, etc. just by googling them.

One other thing.  You have been married to your lovely bride for longer than you've owned guns, right?  So once ya found out that yer a risk to do yourself in if yer by yourself at a commercial range, all ya gotta do is bring Susie along so she can POINT to the gun cases, lol :)

If you are brand spanking new you don’t know the questions to ask and don’t even know like things like outdoor ranges or shooting events even exist. Just like you and I probably don know about various book clubs (wine drinking clubs) that house wives go to :)

Yes, same exact reason has eliminated female only exercise chains right? Oh.. no it didn't.

There's tons o precedent that you can exclude males without ruffling anyone's feathers.

That is a private organization that only allows females. You can certainly have a female only gun range. Having different rules though likely won't fly.

I think was is being said is that he can carry a long gun just about anywhere with an FID card while a hand gun can only go between exempt locations.

Howard that is correct.  To further clarify: If, as I normally do, go alone and just intend to shoot one of their rental guns, I need to bring one of mine along.  They dont care whether the gun you bring is a handgun or a long gun.  Hence, my recommendation is nto bring a long gun so when traveling to/from the range, you can go anywhere you wish.  Ie stop at a store, meet friends who live nearby, stop and eat whereever your want for as long as you want, etc.  There is no benefit to bringing your handgun unless you also intend to shoot it while there.
