Pistol Caliber Carbine

Recommended Posts

Folks,

Need an advice on the topic.

I want to participate in 2/3 gun matches and wanted to buy/build 9mm budget carbine that can use glock magazines. Looked on ( the internet) at:

KelTec

Hi point

AR 9

Another point I was thinking is convertion kits for Glock to carbine.

Budget is undefined but the lower the price the better.

Did a build using New Frontier 9mm Glock lower and BCG, Kaw Valley barrel, comp and buffer (Faxon makes the barrels for KAW), an other assorted parts I had laying around (PSA LPG less trigger, 15" Keymod rail picked up cheap, redid a trigger group I had, Magpul Fixed Carbine stock, etc).  Replaced firing pin due to manufacturing issues (NFA replaced no problem), otherwise performs flawlessly, including last round bolt hold open even with cheap Korean mags.  Very pleased with results.

How much would it run when all done?

Hard to say as I already had parts lying around.  Figure $600 to $800 with prudent shopping.  Joebob's supplied the KAW stuff lower from NFA direct.  Black Friday is coming and so is Murphy so .................

Keltec Sub2000 for the win.

Lifetime warranty.
Takes Glock Mags.
Folds in half.
Retains its value.

I honestly leaning that way to save time and energy. I only curious if I can effectively use it in steel challenge or knockdown steel matches.

To each his own.  Build time was less than an hour, no gas so no timing, just fit some parts together and tighten.  Mine is similar to HE, just picture a fixed carbine stock, no light, sling, or stop on hand guard.  Wears a TRS-25 RDS most days. Great plinker at steel.  Co-habs with the G17G4MOS w/ FF3.  Have a JR Carbine as well, but that changes between 9 and 45.

I have a kel tec and the parts for a AR 9. I say get both eventually because the kel tec is fun, but start with the AR 9. You can do it on a budget quite easily for close to the price of the kel tec. I have the forged 9mm lower from PSA that I got as a blem. It was like $110 IIRC but you have to jump on it the second it goes on sale. I got my blem 9mm BCG and barrel from Spinta Precision, they have great CS and nice products.

There is a special on a low weight 9mm barrel now for $69 http://www.spintaprecision.com/16-9mm-lightweight-melonite-nitride-barrel-1-16-twist-1-2x28-new-product-special/ and a nice angle cut BCG for $109  http://www.spintaprecision.com/blem-9mm-angle-cut-nitride-bolt-carrier-group/

If you shop around you can get a LPK and stock kit for a little over $80. I happen not to like the PSA lower kit so I spend a bit more. A slick side upper is nice on a 9mm build IMO, maybe $80. Joebobs has a standard upper and parts kit for $60 https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Anderson-Manufacturing-AR15-Stripped-Upper-Receive-p/ander-upper.htm

https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Complete-Mil-Spec-Forward-Assist-Kit-p/jb-forwardassistkit.htm

https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Complete-Mil-Spec-Ejection-Port-Door-Kit-Dust-Cov-p/jb-ejectionportdoorkit.htm

15" slim MLOK handguard for $65 http://skidtactical.com/store/guntec-usa/15-ultra-lightweight-thin-m-lok-system-free-floating-handguard-with-monolithic-top-rail/

Kaw Valley linear compensator $39 https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Kaw-Valley-Precision-22cal-Linear-Comp-1-2x28-Blac-p/kvp-linear223-blk.htm

Mil Spec CH $14 or so. I'd personally upgrade my trigger to a ALG ACT or RRA NM and upgrade my CH to something nicer. Add BUIS and perhaps the TRS 25 (on sale for $50 on amazon now) and you have a really sweet setup.

Without the upgrades you are in about $460. Plus shipping and NICS. To me personally the time and energy invested is extremely enjoyably.

Going to participate in indoor knockdown match this weekend. Will see and possibly try what people are shooting. Before pulling the trigger ( no pun intended).

4 months passed but I’m still on the fence.
FWIW I saw people using everything between KRISS vector, kel-tec, and AR. I want an AR but I’m worried that it will become illegal in few months. I hate to throw out $500-600. Then there is a Ruger PCC but no LGS carries one yet. What would you do?

Go with the Ruger.  They'll be around shortly. Best bet against Gov. "Moonbeam".  But no guarantee.

This what my rational part of brain Is leaning towards, if we will be able legally keep AR in year or two I always can add more :). It’s the annoying waiting for the new toy is killing my irrational part.

I picked up a used Hi Point 9 Carbine for a great price a few years ago. The older, non tactical, stock version (the less ugly in my opinion). It’s a good shooter, fairly accurate, no malfunctions and fun.

I also have an old Ruger PC4 (40 cal carbine which uses P944 magazines) this is also fun to shoot and accurate. Ruger just re-released their PC9 carbine and it takes Glock mags. I don’t know the mechanics of the new PC9 but the old PC9/PC4 are a little odd when it comes to reassembly.

Ruger or AR9 are your best options.  Buy once cry once.

Buy the guns you want, and don't be affraid of what jerk off might or might not do.

Agree on buy once approach, but if down the road I will need to dismantle my AR9, it would be money thrown away. The worst part of it, I won't be able to say I didn't see it coming. It's not a political but rather pragmatic approach to our reality.

:) really? , I hate useless things, I don't need another safe queen.

Why would a 9mm carbine be a safe queen?  The rifles are cheap, the ammo is cheap and you can shoot them in pistol caliber ranges.
