Laser engraving in Monmouth Co.?

Recommended Posts

I recently use Perry's Trophy Shop in Long Branch (very 2A friendly) to engrave the magwel of a stripped AR lower.  You can call them and ask if they are able to do what you want or try another trophy shop.  Earth Treasures also does laser engraving but I cannot verify if they will engrave firearms components.

Just remember. If its serialized , they have to hold an ffl.

Only if you are going to leave it there.  If you remain on premises and they do it while you wait there is no transfer.  Engraving is not gunsmithing so the engraver does not need a FFL.

Hold on there bhunted - I only thought the FFL requirement was for actual *firearms* (frames/lowers).  A slide with a serial # on it (and just the slide) requires an FFL to work on?  Since when?

(The slide I want to get engraved is not serialized)

Then no prob.

As Scorp says, that also holds true for cerakoting.

I mentioned this because most places never do things while you wait these days.

Look at it this way. All guns are illegal in commie jersey right?
Only transportable between ranges, repairs, manufacturers, etc.

even just for something like he's asking for?

Yeah, I think you're missing the question bhunted.  Let me try this again - hypothetical:

I have a glock 19.  It has a serialized frame, slide and barrel.

I remove the slide from the frame, and the barrel from the slide.  I leave the frame and barrel at home.  I take the (serialized) slide with me in my pocket to drop off at a shop to get engraved and picked up several days later.

Are you saying that even though the slide is not a firearm (it's just a part), because it's serialized the shop has to have an FFL in order for me to leave it there to be worked on?

If so, I find that hard to believe.

Can you buy a new slide and have it shipped directly to your house or does a slide have to go through an FFL?  It is my understanding that only handgun frames have to go through an FFL.

Handgun frames just like AR lowers.

I thought he said frame. My bad.

Like lowers, it has to be an ffl.

Not sure it matters for just the slide.

I’m sure the FFLs here can chime in.

My bad. But also, Scorps friend shouldn’t have left it.

Let me clarify. Too much confusion. I was referring to Scorps friend scenario combined with Dougs...[emoji16]

I’ll just say:

You cannot leave any lower/frame at any non-ffl....

FFLs, correct me if I’m wrong.

Ok, all good.

(That said, way back when I got my first glock pistol, I took the slide (*only*) to the Bullet Hole to have them install night sights on it.  They insisted on logging the slide into their bound book.  I questioned that, since it wasn't a firearm, but they were not tolerating any discussion on the matter.)

Just because something has a serial number doesn't mean you need an FFL...just the frame is the firearm by definition
If you dropped your computer keyboard off at the engraver, does he need an FFL because it has a serial number?

We did say that so what is your point? [emoji848][emoji23]

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
