revenger 472 Posted December 10, 2017 I have an old craftsman garage door opener that requires an updated receiver and remote. There are two problems with mine, 1st is I dont have the remotes 2nd is that it an old unit that is susceptible to RF interference and RF overload and has a habit of opening for no reason, There are documented conditions that cause this and I always have to make sure my door is unplugged from the 120v The opener it's self is in good mechanical condition as I have rarely used it. anyone aware of an aftermarket receiver / remote unit. Thanks
Howard 538 Posted December 10, 2017 Why not just replace it. These things have come down in price so much and the features are unbelievable. Last year I installed my second Chamberlain batterybackup unit and it was only $198. Besides having remotes and an outside keypad it will open from apps on your smartphone as it is internet enabled. You can check it and control it from anyplace in the world. You also have a log of when it opened and closed. Further, it works even when there is no power. Last it is super quiet. I also replaced the metal wheels on the track with nylon ones and now you don't even hear when the door opens and closes.
10X 3,278 Posted December 10, 2017 Those outside keypads used to come with a sticker on the back showing the key code. Made it easy to unscrew the keypad from the wall to learn the combination. So check for a sticker before installation, and remove it and/or change the code.
Howard 538 Posted December 10, 2017 No, no stickers on these - you program them to whatever you want yourself.

Thanks I had an old Craftsman door opener that after a while displayed the same symptom. I go to work and come home and the door was open WTF. I replaced transmitter and remote with a Genie upgrade and lasted for some time but then the opener itself took a shit but still I can’t complain since the Craftsman lasted 30 + years. Take a look below and see if this works for you, I replaced my old Craftman with the Genie system and its been good. Had a problem with the unit itself and Tech support sent me a new mainboard so IMHO their tech support is top notch Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Dual Frequency Conversion Kit
EWC88 24 Posted December 15, 2017 Don’t want to hijack but this had me thinking how I want to replace my two garage door openers. Nothing wrong besides the fact they are loud as hell! Looked online I see the chain or belt driving, what is better? Also what brands do people recommend?

As I had mention d I replaced the old metal rollers that goin the tracks with nylon ones and between that and the belt drive you almost don’t hear the door when it moves.
