Anti-hunting Legislation Targets NJ Fish & Game Council

Recommended Posts

Well, to be honest, I wouldn't personally want to shoot Bambi... or Thumper. That said, intellectually, I understand that we've wiped out most of the natural predators and if we don't cull the herds we'll end up with starving deer, more slaughter on the highways, etc. And also, I know that hunting licenses fund wildlife conservations programs, etc. So, all in all, I don't have a philosophical problem with hunting.

That said, I don't follow "hunting news" because it doesn't interest me.... so, I don't know if this proposed legislation is just "more of the same" from Sen. Lesniak of Union - or - if he's feeling particularly emboldened by the coming Gov-Elect...? But, this proposal seems like quite a direct (and ridiculous) attack on NJ's hunting community:

I'm assuming Murphy would never veto anything like this, so I'm assuming it will fly through... unless somebody files a lawsuit? Perhaps actions like this will better "engage" hunters politically...? What do you think?

You would be surprised at what you would shoot if you were hungry enough.

No, actually I wouldn't be surprised at all. If I was hungry enough, I'm sure Bambi would suddenly look delectable rather than adorable. I'm pragmatic. I know that most of us (as plump, spoiled Americans) are really disconnected from our natural food sources.  Way before I was a gun owner, I used to chuckle when my girlfriends were APPALLED at those pictures of Sarah Palin posing by a fresh kill. Personally, I couldn't stand the woman - thought she was an idiot. But I always thought the distress over those pictures was utterly ridiculous. In Alaska, they're just way more in touch with the natural food cycle. Here, in NJ, when you pick up that shrink-wrapped steak at the meat counter, you might feel removed from the process... but what you just picked up was Elsie the Cow after all... with big sad eyes equal in every way to Bambi's (sigh). Most people just conveniently push that thought aside.

see the problem here is politics, this guy decides he wants his people to rule in his favor and not what is necessarily the right thing to do.. the way the council is set up now works very well we have a pretty good balance. Hunters have paid for a lot of sanctuary land probably just about all of it.

Lesniak is in debt to the HSUS for their endorsement in his failed governor's bid. Humane Society of the US, although it sounds like the Humane Society, is really a PETA-like group that wants nothing more than to end all hunting, zoos, pet ownership, livestock farming, etc..

Make no mistake, NJ hunting organizations have and will continue to fight these politicians for a very long time. For example, Murphy vows to end the bear hunt as soon as he is in office; despite the Fish and Game council's decision to include it as part of their comprehensive, long-term bear management plan. A plan developed by biologists. The HSUS plan includes bear-proof garbage cans and surgical spaying. Sounds cheap?

Like it or not, hunting is an integral part of conservation. Even trophy hunting has its place, despite the bad rap that its gotten over Cecil being shot. It is not perfect. Ex. A cattle rancher in Africa has several game animals on his property. These animals are competing with his cattle for food/water. If not for a trophy hunter coming in and paying to shoot these animals, they have no other worth to the rancher. His only recourse is to kill these animals himself to leave more for his cattle. Same goes for lions/leopards/hippos/elephants/etc. on his property. If the rancher knows that he can get $50K for the lion that occasionally kills one of his cows, he is willing to make that trade-off. Not so much if he can't.

I've been familiar with Lesniak for some time.  I've never heard of him supporting anything that wasn't liberal/progressive/socialist/communist dogma.

I'm not interested in hunting. I also have nothing against it.  I agree with @RichP even trophy hunting has its place.  If nothing else it throws thousands of dollars into a local economy.  Rest assured if you go to Africa to hunt a lion, giraffe, elephant, hippo, or anything else that meat is eaten.

Maybe this will wake the Fudds up, but I doubt it.  Hunting AND fishing, INCLUDING ocean fishing will soon be controlled by blue haired nose ringed fatties and hand wringing  white urban-suburban liberals from Montclair and Princeton and Jersey city that have never been in the woods or caught a fish. Want to fish with your 7 year old at the county park pond for sunfish? NO! you must take a 40 hour course in fish empathy and have a mental health evaluation! And why would you take a 7 year old FISHING? Are oyu an abuser??

16 Year old HUNTING? GUNS??? Straight to PRISON for you and Transgender re-education for your child!!!

Make no mistake, the Democrats, including and ESPECIALLY Lesniak, Greenberg, Goldberg, Oliver, Coleman, drug dealing Newark mayor, Fulop Wienberg, etc. HATE YOU PERSONALLY for hunting OR fishing. They want compliant potheads staying at home watching TV or video games.

It's the most ridiculous crap I've ever heard of.

What'll happen is this, Smokey will eat a kid. Everyone will get upset.  The MSM will report that bear attacks are up and population is out of control.  The state will then pay for "professional" game exterminators to shoot Smokey and the meat will go to waste.  Or, the state will come up with a cockamamie plan to sterilize Mrs. Smokey which is pretty much an expensive and ineffective strategy to cull the breeding.  It also just adds meds to a relatively natural species, which strikes me as abusive and just fucking odd.

Then they'll raise our taxes yet again to further promote public safety.

And no, the FUDD's won't wake up.

Saddle River wants to dart and surgically remove the reproductive organs from deer as a method of management.

PS - Can't blame the hunter FUDD's anymore. Their numbers go down every year as noted in license sales data. Their impact and voice is diminished each year save for Norcross' buddies at the NJOA. New hunter numbers (new participants) are fewer each year.

I think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread!  The NJOA is already in a tizzy over the bear hunt possibly going-away.  They have already reached-out to Steve Sweeney & others to ensure that this BS never comes out of committee.  So they are banging the drums already!  We'll see IF it does.  Meanwhile, The Federation of NJ Sportsmen's Clubs already has one of their leaders on the Executive Council of the ANJR&PC, and the Federation attended the last NJSAFECON in Princeton, NJ this last September.  Being seen & heard.  Talking common sense & fighting for common objectives.  There are already things in motion to fight this type of Gerrymandering of the Game Council.  I wish all of them well.  Except for Lesniak.  That idiot should just go-away, deep into the woods, and fall into an abandoned septic tank :)

This right here is what it's really about. While we all may go to the 9-5 and pay the taxes, there's a fundamental, philosophical difference between those who are still tied to that which is NATURAL - hunting, fishing, camping, even just getting your hands dirty planting a tree in the backyard. Versus those who are tied to that which is UNNATURAL - social media, drug use, dependent upon caffeine and processed foods like those avocado soy-burgers. Guess which group is easier for a state to control? We all know the answer.

The conservative movement in the USA failed 30 years ago, when they decided to frame it as "them vs. the constitution" - it's not about the constitution. It's about natural vs. unnatural, and when you live in an unnatural way, it cannot be sustained for long.

I was actually curious enough to look up the resident license saleshttp://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/license_sales70-16.pdf  to see what % of the mythical 1 million NJ gun owners they are. In 2016- 32,500. Less than 1/2 of 20 yrs ago and a fraction of the 187K back in 1971. Of course the hunting habitat is also a fraction of what it used to be. Just another stat supporting how any semblance of gun culture is going the way of the dinosaurs around here. So yes it seems the fudds arent too relevant any more(if ever) as far as a gun rights voting bloc goes. I would also assume that most of the hunters already live in 2A tolerant (rural) areas and are represented by R's in Trenton, generally speaking.

This is Lesniak's last hurrah, he's retiring at the end of this legislative session, so Murphy won't be signing any Lesniak sponsored legislation. Any bill out there now dies at the end of the legislative session if not signed by Christie. I sure some other ass hat will fill Lesniak's void pushing his liberal/commie agenda, but it won't be Lesniak any more.
