Pinned and welded?

Recommended Posts

Do we need to Pin and weld our suppressors?  Or would just pinning suffice?
If you can have a suppressor, you don't need to do either. If you are limited to a brake, then either is fine.

Cans (Suppressors) are not legal in NJ

That being said, if you are in a Free State that allows them, then no nothing has to be pinned and/or welded.

In NJ, a muzzle devise (other than a Flash Hider) must be pinned or welded unless yo uhave a barrel less then

16" (most common is 14.5") then the ATF ruling allies that the extension / brake / whatever must be welded as to

make the weapon non-NFA.

But what if what screws off leaves threads behind. I’m under the impression that a threaded ar barrel can’t be.

A threaded barrel is an evil feature on a Semi Auto rifle in NJ

You are allowed one (1) evil feature, which is usually the Pistol Grip but if your rifle does not have a pistol grip (or another evil feature) than the threaded barrel is legal (Example: Standard Ruger 10/22 with no PG)

Just to clarify - In the case of barrels <16", I don't believe that the device (brake) itself has to be welded directly to the barrel - but the pin(s)  must be welded or silver-soldered over.

If I'm spreading misinformation, somebody please cut and paste the exact ruling from the BATFE.

Adios,

Yes, a sub 16" Barrel will need to adhere to federal law, NFA standards. So the pin would need to be welded. The part that everyone forgets on that front is that it has to hold! If it is able to be removed with normal hand tools it is deemed to not have been permanent.

Now as far as the OP's question. If it is indeed a suppressor you are talking about, it don't matter what you do with it. If it is not in direct support of active military or police action, you cant bring it to NJ. As a class 3 we went to PA to do Demo's because they cant even be brought in for a demo for Police!
