Here is a photo I currently have of the pistol, I have several more but it seems I can only upload one to the thread, so here it is

This photo has been cropped down from the original so I can show it here, the serial number is visible but too blurry to make out anything more than the last 4 digits

Don't think of refinishing it.  Original finish is much more valuable than a bright blue or new parkerizing.

Don’t store it in the holster. Get a gun sock.

As @GRIZ said don’t refinish. I’d oil and rub any corrosion though.

Nice pistol, I would recommend You not store it inside of the pictured holster. It will destroy the finish. The holster looks like a modified German p38 holster.

The pistol was only in the holster for photo purposes, definelty not good to leave it in there.

Steel wool will cause irreversible damage to wood and metal on firearms. If you are concerned about rust on metal parts use oil and brass/copper wool. I have seen hundreds of rare Mauser K98s and K43 rifles that would have been collectible destroyed by steel wool and sand paper.

Agree 100%. Only remove active rust and never with steel wool not even 0000.

That is an absolutely beautiful pistol.  I hope you put a magazine full of low powered rounds thru it just to enjoy it.  If you don't, I understand, but I would.  But it's truly gorgeous.

That would be a good idea.  

I've heard WW1 1911s were made of softer steel than the WW2 and later production.  A moderate amount of standard 230 fmj wouldn't hurt it.

Hey guys, got another shot of it the other day but this forum will not allow me to upload the photos as they’re too big. The serial # is 254228 which is less than 400 off from the apparent pistol that “Sgt. York” carried? I’m unfamiliar with him and his story but it came up while doing my research. I also wrote down the stamps I found on the pieces within it. They are as follows: 

 

Barrel: 5, P, I, H

Slide: C, 7, A, G, 4

Slide (Where Hammer Hits) - H 

Frame: 2, 7, H, M, G, 8
