Advice, I feel like I'm getting shaked down for money

Hey guys, I need some advice on what I am currently going through with my FID application.

For starters, I have been an FID holder in NJ since 2015. In that time I have owned 2 AR15's, an AR10 and 1 handgun. Late last year I moved and I applied for the change of address on my FID in december with my town.

As of right now, I still don't have my new FID with matching address & new handgun permit to buy another pistol. I have ADHD, I have always had it, put that down using full disclosure on my first FID application in 2015 and did so again in 2017 when I applied for a change of address. When I called my police department last week, I asked them where we were at in the process, they are waiting to get their questionnaire back from my doctor, which from what I understand it is nothing more than asking him for a character statement on me and based on what he's treated me for, if he thinks I'm safe to own firearms (ones that I already do and purchased legally). So I called my psychiatrist's office the other day about this and they told me that he did receive their letter 5 weeks ago and was waiting until he saw me again to fill it out, the last time I saw him with 2 weeks ago and he mentioned nothing of it. So I asked them to please let me know when they do send it out as I am putting in my best efforts to get my FID approved because ultimately it's my responsibility, not my town's police departments.

I get a call from my psych yesterday asking me about it and I explained to him how I am doing the right thing and giving full disclosure, I've owned guns for 3 years now with no issues and it's to be in the right by having a matching FID to my driver's license. Since the gun laws in this state are such a grey area, that even though my FID doesn't match my DL right now I am allowed to legally use my guns and what not, but all it would take is a police officer having a bad day to arrest me if I was going to the range or where ever with my guns. Although I am not doing anything illegal I would then still have to go through a very costly legal process to be proven innocent, so the more sensible thing to do would be to get my new FID pushed through as fast as possible so I can continue being a law abiding gun owner. He seemed to understand, however wanted me to come in again and speak to him about this and go over the form because it's something we never talk about. For him to do this, he wants to charge me another $375 to come in and see him to go over this mental health form the police sent him, which from my perspective (i could be wrong) is nothing more than a character statement for him to fill out, as he does treat me for ADHD and based on our treatment he should be able to answer it. What annoys me about this is he's known about this for over a month now and when I saw him 2 weeks ago and paid him $375 to write me a prescription for my medication and didn't mention it then. I feel like he is trying to shake me down for more money. I explained this to him and the only compromise he is willing to do for me at this point is discuss it with me the next time I see him in 2 weeks for my medication renewal. He could be misinterpreting the letter the police sent him as needing to perform an evaluation on me, but from what I gather it is no different than the forms they send to my references, but I see this as he is using this as an opportunity to get more money out of me for another visit if I want my FID pushed through faster.

Based off of this, is there anything I can do? Should I call a lawyer? Do police departments have resources to a neutral and objective doctor to interview me and fill out this form?

thanks.

Its a shake down alright. Is this the same doc who responded first time around in 2015 ? If so, did he try to shake you down then too ?

Everyone is different, but IF this was me, I would pay the $375 or wait two weeks. Lawyers will suck more out of you with no guarantee of different outcome.

Unfortunately, its a dog eat dog world out there. Hypocrites. And NJ politicians know it.

I wasn't seeing him back then. Funny thing is the first time I applied for an FID, I disclosed everything as I should and they didn't even go this extensive, i guess different towns different measures right?

that goes without saying. After this next appointment I will be going elsewhere. Is there anything I can do?

Damn didn't think you had to go through that for ADHA!! It's not like you suffer from paranoid schizophrenia!! I would tell him could he please fill the form out based off of his last evaluation. Do you have medical insurance that covers seeing a behavioral specialist? that a lot per visit brother.

ADD? You def opened a can of worms that wasn't worth opening.

Side note, you will not have any problems shooting your legally obtained guns at the range or transporting. Your new FID and DL need to match if you're buying guns (firearms PURCHASE ID) but you can shoot while you deal with this BS.

I'd wait it out and save the $375. That's almost 2 cases of 9mm.

Yep different towns, different way to screw law abiding citizens. Goes without saying that you may want to shop for a 2A friendly doc for future.

And maybe send your issue to the people doing the case below.  The different ways we're treated is part of the case.  The 14th amendment does not allow for disparagement in treatment. They may like having this ammo.

Are you paying him to just get prescription refills? If so, that sounds like a shakedown! Can't the doctor write the prescription with 'x" amount of refills?

As others said, wait until your next scheduled appointment.  You do not need a FID to transport firearms to and from the range.  Sucks waiting but I wouldn't pay extra.

Just remember in the nurse's eyes, NFB=YES. So a clever answer would be, "Who would want to own them?" Got to dump it back in their lap with a "sterile" ring to it.  Question with a question, Then move on.  Leave the box on the doctor's form empty, they never check the form when you hand it back, Oh, and consider a new doctor.

Threres no reason adhd should even be a factor.  Its not a mental condition.

Well, it is a mental condition, but I agree it doesn’t seem like it should be a factor here...except ADHD might make you buy and enjoy a lot of different kinds of guns.  :-)

I mentioned it in 2015 and gave full disclosure then, giving full disclosure now as well. Why? because I'm not a horrible person and give full disclosure, much to the liberals in this state's disbeliefs!

That doctor may just be protecting himself and doesn't want to be involved. Nj is the lawyer state. Your neighbor sees you cleaning guns through your living room window, they freak and call police, comes to light this doctor said you can own them, neighbors go to facebook and shame the doctor out of practice

Worthwhile move, as I was just going to put the ammo on my other CC, minus the deal and being able to buy more [emoji846]
