Least Obnoxious Muzzle Break?

Recommended Posts

First post on the forum, be gentle...

Building my first NJ compliant AR15. I am aware that muzzle breaks / comps & the word "quiet" do not go together, however I would like to find a muzzle break / comp that does not annoy the shit out of me or the person next to me in terms of noise and muzzle blast. (Yes, I know it's a gun range and things go boom man up etc...) But I am a sucker for being considerate.

Scouring the internet, I have been led to the Battle Comp (Expensive), Troy Claymore, Carlson Comp Mini (Illegal?) as my choices for reasonable breaks. Would any of you kind, fellow oppressed New Jerseyans enlighten me on what muzzle break you use that isn't totally obnoxious? Thanks!

You primarily put a brake on for function, I have a SJC titan brake that will loosen your fillings but you can triple tap like it was a 22. If someone shooting next to you is offended by your " loud " brake the should take up bird watching or something similarly quiet.

I believe Murphy already plans on making muzzle brakes illegal, just like flash hiders! If you do get one, don't spend too much for it if you plan on taking it to the range. Buy stock in a company that makes unthreaded barrels and thread protectors with the leftover funds!

This i going to screw a lot of people. Me included. Most of my builds are 14.5

THAT is why he's doing it! I am in the same boat! Don't go buying a new 16 inch non-threaded replacement barrel just yet since he will not stop there!

My 16'' upper is already on the way...screw him he can try and take it....anyway back on topic. Assuming muzzle breaks will not become illegal...

Anyone know if a pinned thread protector could be taken off and replaced with a muzzle break? I would assume no but I wonder if it's been done.

Why replace the whole upper? The barrel is cheaper! With regards to the thread protector, it all depends if it was just pinned or pinned and welded! Just pinned, get your dremmel and grind the pin down to where you can take off the protector!

Please lets not go through the whole sky is falling thing again ..... Just get what you want that is currently legal now, don't worry about what may or may not happen in the future.

No sky is falling my friend! There are those that say buy as many AR s as you can now! There are those who are in a panic looking to sell everything black!

I choose to do nothing right now until I know all the facts!

I hear yah, but if there was a happy medium between function & muzzle blast / noise level that's what I would be looking for. My go to was going to be the Carlson Comp Mini but I'm still hesitant because of the whole "pinky test". Says it's post ban compliant but...

I am looking forward to it...back to the topic.

What about linear compensators? Their function is to direct blast forward correct? How does it benefit the shooter and does the blast come back at the shooters face even though its projected forward? @Zeke mentioned the Warden, too expensive for my current build but would that be considered a linear comp?

Warden and that type of product goes on the brake device. As needed

Interesting, just watched some videos. I take it it's legal in NJ? Pardon my ignorance, but would the primary function be to mitigate muzzle blast away from the shooter? Or are there any other benefits using this system such as decreased muzzle flip?

Screw all this nonsense. Do what you want. I’m not changing jack. I am also not going out and buying as many ARs as I can afford.
Past, present and future. Explain to me why the hell you need dozens of ARs? You can only shoot one at a time. Buy one or two of your fav or the best of the best. If it ever comes to confiscate, they will take all and you lose a ton of money. If you hide one or many, where you going to shoot them?
This whole thing is crazy. 🤪

      Hi there,
I was wondering what muzzle brakes/comps everyone is using.  I have a Battle Comp on one of my rifles and a KVP on an "other."  I'm looking for an option to pin on a 14.5" barrel to exceed 16'.  I was hoping for something milder than the Battle Comp, which exhibits too much concussion for my tastes.  A few people recommended the VG6 Gamma, but I would need the EX for length, and it looks to be discontinued.  The Epsilon has the length but VG6 said it's not NJ legal.  The Bravo Comp looks good, but on some old threads here it wasn't clear if it was GTG from a legal standpoint.  Please let me know what you would recommended for shooting in an indoor range.  Thanks.

      Hi all.

Initially I wanted to install 14x1mm LH AK-74 style muzzle break made by Chris Butler at AK-USA. But my biggest concern is that this muzzle device will make the rifle louder (when I shoot indoors). AK-74 style brakes put a lot of gas out to the sides, they direct so much concussive force sideways towards other people, so it feels more intense.

To make the long story short. I'm looking for one of the modern brakes that directs gas forward, to avoid anything with larger lateral ports.

The original 4 piece Bulgarian is considered a flash hider. I'd also avoid anything with a thread.

Do any of the following linear brakes look g2g to you guys:

      1. http://www.ultimatearmsgear.com/Ultimate-Arms-Gear-Concussion-Overpressure/dp/B015GE5HUC

      2. https://www.custommuzzlebrakes.com/#!/Tactical-Low-Concussion-Rifle-Muzzle-Brake/p/35179679/category=7058691 (choose M14-1 LH 7.62mm AK47)

      3. http://www.griffinarmament.com/Griffin-Armament-QD-Blast-Shield-p/gaqdbs.htm
Are brake shields like this one (the Griffin Armament QD Blast Shield) even legal in NJ?

      Would appreciate any suggestions!
      Thanks.

What would be your ideal NJ legal muzzle device? Length? Diameter? Placement of holes and/or slots? Open or closed end? Do you want it to reduce recoil, muzzle rise or just look evil?

I am contemplating designing and having one manufactured. It will be long enough to make 14.5" barrels 16", and the threads will be 1/2" x 28 TPI. The sound and flash will not be controlled. It will be tested and found to NOT suppress the flash and it will be advertised that way to satisfy NJ laws.

      Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure I missed the memo on this one. I see a bunch of mentions that people have their muzzle devices both pinned and welded to their barrels for the purpose of making their semi-auto rifles compliant.

Is simply having the muzzle device pinned not enough? I find that strange since we don't need to have our stocks welded and pinning seems to be the acceptable means by which 14 inch barrels with 2 inch muzzle devices are not considered SBRs in free states.

For context, the reason I ask is because I've finalized my decision for what AR upper to slap on my lower. The upper will have a 14 inch barrel with a pinned compensator when it arrives on my doorstep. Would I need to have additional work done so I'm not lugging around an Assault Weapons as per NJ State law? Is there some statute that defines what permanently affixed means or is welding just done as overkill to remove all doubt?

    • Some incidentals that may also want to have. Range bag Tools (screw drivers, torx, allen keys, etc) Staple gun if you don’t use adhesive targets   If you go to a rifle range... Binoculars or a spotting scope, maybe a sandbag/rest, a mat if you shoot prone, a smaller mat if your shooting benches are rough concrete. Scopes are nice but you can shoot 200 yds with a decent red dot if you don’t want to spend $$$ on a scope just yet. An AR500 steel target. 12 inch is a decent size.  And a can of white spray paint.  Plus a way to hang it. Search that and you’ll find some options. A target stand that your range approves of for paper targets.  I think most ranges require targets at a height that will put rounds into the backstop when passing through the target. As opposed to skipping off the dirt down range. Check the rules for where ever you shoot. Some people like brass catchers.  I’ve tried just one type and found it to be more of a hassle than it was worth. Just my opinion. But sweeping up your brass is also a hassle. Yet one or the other are usually required. Necessity will help with the rest.  Have fun.
    • I may have something laying around.   I'll look tomorrow and let you know.
    • I’m not up on the details of this thing but they go on a trip and he and her separate.....and he just comes home then disappears from view. Either he killed her and is at a loss what to do except hide under the covers...or maybe something bad happened to her at the hands of someone else and he is scared s@@@less he will be blamed.....or maybe she blew him off and he just said eff it and came home and wasn’t interested in explaining anything.  Then got scared when she is nowhere to be found.  Maybe there are other possibilities, but these seem the most likely to me. The encounter with police looks bad for him. Her ending up missing or dead after that situation makes him their favorite person to talk to.
    • Hi Guys, Looking for a low mount for a Sig Romeo 5. Anyone have one collecting dust that they wanna part with? I can pay you electronically and you can ship or Ill come and get it. Thanks, Lou
