While I disagreed with his politics, he was an amazingly intelligent man who made vast contributions to the scientific community, and mankind.

That's the sad part about suffering from ALS. You stay 100% congnitive, but watch your body just waste away.

Amazing that he survived with that disease for so long.  His contributions are among the greatest in his field.  I really enjoyed reading his works.  Hawking did a recent interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson where he discussed what happened prior to the Big Bang.  His simple answer was there was nothing.  No space or time—which we now know are linked as space-time.  He explained it elegantly in lay terms but the basic message was nothing existed.
