Malice4you 627 Posted March 19, 2018 Finally seem to have motivated myself enough to start doing the workbook for getting a hunting license. Honestly, my main purpose is for use of the WMA ranges and a few other minor benefits - I will not be hunting whatsoever. My primary interest is in using .22LR and .17HMR bolt action rifles on the rifle range, and occasional use of the shotgun range. Looking at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/hntlicfe.htm I see a "rifle permit" with an extra $10.50 fee. If I plan on using the Clinton WMA rifle range, would I need to add this when I get the actual license, or am I covered for WMA rifle range use with only the resident hunting license? Thanks
Krdshrk 3,877 Posted March 19, 2018 Resident hunting license is fine.

I've been watching this thread carefully, too, because I'll be doing the same thing as @Malice4youat some point. I'm sure we're not the only non-hunters to view the WMA as a convenient, nearby range. In fact, as soon as Malice has his hunting permit... I hope he posts about it that very instant... because I'll be bugging him to set up a date to try out his rifles (not really "bugging" as he already generously offered). If I were a betting woman (and I am)... I'd say a rimfire rifle is my next likely purchase so I want to start seeing/trying all the various options to choose from. Might take awhile to figure out what I want, so not sure if I'll be getting a license this season or next... but it'll be a fun journey either way. Remember - SCFGPA you can fire .22LR rifles at the regular indoor range.

But, still... there is something so nice about an outdoor range in nice weather... that I intend to supplement with the Clinton WMA anyway (when I do get a rimfire rifle eventually). 40 minutes ago, capt14k said: Tough to beat versatility of 10/22. But, I don't want to hijack Malice's thread. So, at some point, later in the season, I'll open a new thread looking for suggestions - these I've already made a note of, thx. And you're like the 3rd person to say 10/22 btw. A lot of people seem to like that one as good value for the price.
WP22 1,558 Posted March 19, 2018 10/22's are great. But I've jonesing for a CZ455 with peep sights. I gotta stop procrastinate and get it. And yeah, eventually I'll be getting a hunting license too.
Krdshrk 3,877 Posted March 20, 2018 10/22 is a great all around .22LR. Can be had for $200 when there are sales.
Malice4you 627 Posted March 20, 2018 Hijack away @Mrs. Peel We all know every thread drifts, and I got my answer. Plus I'm always down for talking about .22s For a semi-auto .22 rifle - really hard to beat the versatility of a 10/22 - there are roughly 2 million options and variations and configurations available. If you want a takedown sporter barrel model or a heavy barrel precision gun or a G36/SAW/P90 "clone", there are options. For cheap bolt guns, hard to beat a decent Marlin or Savage IMO. For under $200, a basic Marlin is a nice gun. Mine has easily over 8k through it, and still shoots great. The Savages I own were a bit more expensive, but are great shooters. Probably even more options for bolt guns than there are 10/22 configurations, and most of them are probably decent choices. I'm still salivating over an Anschutz...one day I'll own one (or a few, knowing me)
Mrs. Peel 7,157 Posted March 20, 2018 Ha! Now I'm compiling a list... a little ahead of schedule it seems. At least I won't need a permit.
gfl216 226 Posted March 20, 2018 Check out the Marlin 795, Cheaper that a 10/22 and I think it feels better in the hands. Definitely much better factory sights. I know most people on here are boycotting Dicks but I got mine in a Black Friday deal a few years back for $130 out the door
dajonga 396 Posted March 20, 2018 I have been using the Stafford Forge WMA as a .22 and shotgun range for many years now. I took my hunters education class at Range 14 in '10 for shotgun and renew my shotgun license every year. I do not hunt, but I see Stafford Forge as my closest and cheapest outdoor range for .22 and 12g shooting. Now that .17 is allowed, I really want to get a .17 HMR rifle. I know that 100 yards is not much of a challenge for the round, but it is a challenge for me.

ChrisJM981 924 Posted March 20, 2018 Would I need a firearms/ bow / rifle license to use each of the practice ranges at WMA?
dajonga 396 Posted March 20, 2018 I would think you would only need 1 license to take advantage of all the ranges at your local WMA. I only have shotgun and I have no intention of ever getting another type. And I have never, in nearly 10 years, seen any officials at Stafford Forge to check for credentials. From the NJDEP website.... At least one (1) member of the shooting party must have a current, valid New Jersey hunting license in possession.

Krdshrk 3,877 Posted March 21, 2018 You only need a valid license. Doesn't have to be for each specific type.

Malice4you 627 Posted April 9, 2018 Wanted to say thanks again to everyone. Not that anyone cares, but sucessfully completed the test today and went out and got not only my hunting license, but a fishing license as well (first I've had one since 2001). Trout stamp isn't much of a stamp anymore...
12345678910 17 Posted April 9, 2018 I'm also in the process of getting my hunting license so I can shoot at Clinton WMA. Like the OP I have no intention of hunting, just want to use the range as its right down the road. I did the online hunter course in the fall but just haven't gotten around to doing the field day yet.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I saw, just have been out of things for 17 years (wow), and i still have my old license from 2001 with an actual stamp you had to lick (i think), on real paper, filled out by hand. This new fangled method is nice, just different, thats all. I waited on line almost as long as it took getting the licenses, if they did them the old way, I'd have been there an hour. I have shot at Stafford Forge for the past few years now, and I have been asked for my license at least once a year. It all depends on if you are there when they stop by or not. Trust me they do stop by and they do verify everyone there is with a licensed hunter. Btw, they are always polite with me, and they only take up a minute of your time. If you are following the rules they just thank you and let you go on with your day. Very little hassle at all.
KennyMats 1 Posted October 23, 2020 Just finished the online written portion of this. What's involved with the field test? I just want my license for range access. Pretty much just need a pulse?
Bklynracer 1,263 Posted October 23, 2020 Just did mine, it's easy, safety, point in safe direction shoot 3 times, 2 birds, and 1 stationary. Really doesn't matter if you hit it. He might hand you a 20 gauge for a 12 gauge shell to see if you check. Took me less then 15 minutes.
