OK to bring Gun for weekend into PA?

Headed up to PennState for the weekend and planning to hit Scotia Gun range. Can I bring my guns from NJ into PA for the weekend?

 

Of course separate ammo and gun locked boxes.

 

Worried about guns in Hotel Rooms and of course traveling through NJ!

 

Worth the risk???

If you are transporting a long rifle ( Overall length > 26" or barrel length >16") using NJ transport laws you are fine in PA.  In fact you can open/conceal carry in PA with it.  It's not considered a firearm in PA -- definition below.

I would just check with the hotel (anonymously) to see if they are okay with it.  PA residents tend to be much better about it than NJ residents.  It is, however, legal to keep it in your car.

 

Under 18 PA.C.S. § 6102, “Firearm” is defined as, “Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of less than 26 inches.

Long Guns

 

(These are rifles that have a barrel 16” or longer, and shotguns that have a barrel 18” or longer.)

• 1.) An individual who may legally possess can carry an unloaded long gun in his/her car.
• 2.) An individual who does or does not have a valid License to Carry Firearms (LTCF) cannot carry a loaded long gun in his/her car.
• 3.) An individual can carry a loaded or unloaded long gun, concealed or openly, without a License to Carry Firearms (LTCF), because, as depicted above, PA’s definition of a firearm does not include long guns. HOWEVER, we highly recommend that you do NOT try conceal carrying a long gun with or without a License to Carry Firearms because the police are unlikely to know the laws, even though you would be lawfully carrying.

Don't call the hotel please, go online and check their website. If you ask them of course they'll say no then management will be nudged into making "no gun" policies. This 8s the kind of stuff that pushes the anti gun policies... Especially when people were contacting the PA ag and asking if the NH nonresident permit is good in pa. You're shooting yourself in the foot by doing so...

Just make sure if you have handguns that if stopped you are going from your home (an exempt location) to a shooting range in PA (exempt location per NJ law).  That way if stopped in NJ you don't run afoul of NJ law which only allows transport in exempt locations.  Once you cross the border into PA you can abandon that plan.  To play it safe on the way back your car should stop for at least a moment at a range so if needed your GPS will show you were at a range and then were headed back.  Nobody will likely ever know if you are not, but this is just in case advice to be 100% legal with the fools in the socialist people's republic of New Jermany.

NJ also allows handgun transport between home and gun shop and back. Find a gun shop on your way home and stop by to browse. Exempted location...check.
