Where do things stand on pending semi-auto rifle legislation?

Recommended Posts

Probably a lot, they have the next 8 years to do anything they feel like. That said, there's nothing yet signed into law. This year we'll most likely see the end of private sales, a ten round magazine limits without grandfathering (or one for which the grandfathering is excessively onerous and not worth the 5 rounds) and the ability for low level counselors to take away your gun rights.

Also a lot of people are gonna chime in about rallies and lawsuits. They're good people and they mean well. But how are those lawsuits going for NY, MD, CT etc.? Yeah...nowhere...

I am not offhand  aware of new formal legislation in this regard(yet).  However, listen to today’s Gun4Hire podcast where Evan Nappen discusses this very topic.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Hopefully it won't gain any traction. As written the law would ban any semi-auto rifle with a second handgrip.

Just for clarification. NY successfully fought the 7 round limit (it reverted back to prior law of 10). CA has an injunction on the 10-round limit and thst case is still going through the court.

Your overall point still stands, however.

The last Democrat New Jersey governor who was reelected to a second term was Brendan Byrne.

That happened in November 1977.

Unless Murphy can manage to find a way for the state to print its own money or he establishes a New Jersey Pirate Kingdom, the state's fiscal problems are insurmountable.

Anything he does is likely to anger more than half of all voters.

Prior law in NY state was no limit. Only NYC had a 10 round limit... so they fought the “only load 7 rounds in a 10 round mag” that was found to be unenforceable but 10 round mag limit was upheld... They did not revert to previous limits.

The stand on 10 round limitation was made almost immediately after the SAFE Act passed in 2013. Essentially nothing was successful, only more clarifications were disclosed.

Putting more than 7 rounds in the magazine at home or while carrying concealed has not changed. You can however load to 8, 9 or 10 rounds while doing exempted activities explained in the 400 Section of the Penal Code where it talks about penalties: at the shooting range, at an IDPA match, at any sanctioned NRA match, or while receiving formal instruction from an NRA Instructor, Law Enforcement Trainer, School or professional academy / training center.

ECON laws for hunting haven't changed either, only they've become more restrictive since the SAFE Act. There was always a specific limitation on centerfire capacity when hunting big game, but rimfire was exempt. Now, if you squirrel hunt with your Ruger 10/22 or Marlin lever action .22, you can only load 7 rounds in the magazine.

Let's put it in simple terms, NJ likes being first in everything, taxes included. Take it from there. No sit up straight and pay attention, resident! Cause Murphy says NJ only has residents under his watch, no citizens.

Yeah right after he fattens up the pensions for anyone who works for the state, then legalizes weed, I'm sure he's gonna lose re election. Yeah ok.

Also to the people talking about how CA "beat" the ban on their grandfathered magazines...they also lost their bullet buttons and even worse, they lost the ability to buy ammo online. One step sideways, two steps back. I'm not trying to be negative and don't want to offend anyone. But it's just not a good outlook.

NY Times (!): "One Top Taxpayer Moved, and New Jersey Shuddered":

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/01/business/one-top-taxpayer-moved-and-new-jersey-shuddered.html

The state is losing more population than it is gaining, (relative to other states). It's generally listed in the top states that people are moving out of.

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/united-van-lines-national-movers-study-shows-americans-continue-to-move-west-and-south-300574718.html

Within that frame, the state is losing a lot of high tax payers. But it's gaining a lot of people who want free stuff.

Mar-a-Lago is closed between Mother's Day and Halloween, and one of New Jersey's most famous part-year residents is about to return for the summer. Do you think he pays New Jersey income taxes? (Under New Jersey law, he doesn't have to.)

I don't think Murphy has any viable option. Sure, he can raise income taxes. And sales taxes. But New Jersey is the #3 state for taxes https://taxfoundation.org/publications/state-local-tax-burden-rankings/ and he'll lose even more tax-paying residents than the state is losing now.

I've heard the pie-in-the-sky idea that a marijuana tax will save the state. But Murphy can't put a Viagra-level price on legal weed because the legal retail price still needs to be competitive with the black-market price.

Back to the OP, is the photo below going to be a pistol grip under the not yet passed and not yet interpreted New Jersey semi-automatic rifle law?

It is in California.

But it's not in New York. (New York's Safe Act is so badly written that nobody really knows for sure. But the consensus of most legal experts in New York is that it's not a pistol grip.)

Fortunately, there are millions of very smart people in California who have been working on solutions for several years now. (Visit the Cali firearm discussion board for ideas.)

I have hopes that Trump will appoint three more SC justices and the SC will find that the full-featured AR is a firearm in "common use for legal purposes".

(Yes, that may take a few years.)

So in the meantime, do you have a saw?

those that voted him in are too stupid. at this point, we're at an "idiocracy" point of voting in nj. he may well land a 2nd term. even if he doesn't, the state legislature is still lost.

In Gov Gopher's mind, he doesn't even want a second term. That would be contrary to his Wannabe Woody Wilson plan.

He'd like to serve part of his (first and only) term, be drafted for the Democrap nomination for POTUS in 2020, win the election and leave us with the first black woman to be NJ governor.

G-d help us!

The last time New Jersey had a conservative governor was 1944.

And he was a Democrat!

The People's Republic of New Jersey idiocracy is on Medicare and Social Security and headed for the nursing home.

Quote

New Jersey’s gubernatorial election was the second costliest on record – and culminated with the lowest voter turnout, in percentage terms, in state history.

Election results were made official Wednesday. They show Gov.-elect Phil Murphy won by 14.1 percentage points, his 1.2 million votes amounting to 56 percent. At just under 900,000 votes, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno drew the fewest votes for a Republican nominee since 1989.

Quote

Numbers certified Wednesday by the Board of State Canvassers showed voter turnout was 38.5 percent, with about 2.2 million of the 5.6 million registered voters participating.

That’s down from 39.6 percent in 2013, which had been the record low turnout for a year when a governor was being elected.

Voters think that they will get screwed no matter who wins. Are they wrong? It mainly seems to be a difference in the degree and method of screwing. So why bother?

Just this morning I was thinking about buying a Mar-a-Bob-O in Florida, for all but the really hot months. (My business is portable because it's on a computer.) Seems to make much more sense than upgrading my taxes by buying a bigger house here in the People's Republic. I can buy the bigger house, keep the New Jersey house for the hot summer months, and pay less in net taxes. Am I missing something? My heirs can then worry about what to do with the New Jersey house.

(My wife said, "But, but, what about healthcare?" I noted that the Mayo Clinic has an operation in Jacksonville.)

It's a 13 1/2 hour drive from here at the Jersey Shore to Jacksonville.

Gov Beaver Puss announced this morning the he will not honor Christy’s promises to hold down certain taxes (like sales) to off set the .23 gas tax. And he will maintain the .23. Christy promised to lower the .23 if he had to raise the others. He claims we’ll get it back 4 times in better life style. He’s nothing but a f’en socialist. He must have read Castro’s book.

Let me be the first to welcome you to the Jacksonville area.  Hopefully you will be voting the right way to help slow the decay of our state.

Link to an article from 101.5 that talks about this. Essentially there was a "poison pill" provision in the gas hike / sales tax reduction.  Meaning if you increase the sales tax then the gas tax hike is eliminated.  It was put in the bill so the politicians couldn't pull a quick one.  Murphy says it doesn't matter and he'll ignore it.  Because he thinks it was  just a publicity ploy that he and the rest of the legislatures don't need to follow

I'm sure all of us think the new gun laws are nothing more than a publicity ploy.  By Murphy's logic we can just ignore them, right?

Of course they can. They are politicans.  They can do whatever they want.

Another artice which gives example of how they can kill the "poison pill" provision.

I know a lot of dems who balked at at the proposed tax plans. Unfortunately instead of voting against the idiocy, they simply abstained. Perhaps they will figure out that abstaining won't stem the bleeding.
