Hot Weather | Locked Cars - Danger to Kids... & Pets, too

Recommended Posts

Every year, it happens. We hear about some baby, toddler (yeah, pets too) dying of heatstroke in the back of a locked car. There's always the outrage - how could that parent let that happen?  I've asked that question myself at times. Well, here's a very interesting article about a young couple, and the mom thought she had left their young daughter at the daycare - literally looked at the feed from the daycare center throughout the day, thinking all was well - only to realize with horror at the end of the day that the child was in her car in the parking lot at work - dead

It goes into some interesting analysis of what happens in a person's brain when this happens - frankly, I've always suspected there was SOME reason other than neglectfulness (because some of these people really do seem like loving parents), so it was sort of interesting to see the "brain science" angle to it. It seems that a small interruption in routine often triggers these events - and it discusses how competing parts of the brain create a "false memory" of a routine drop-off that didn't actually happen that day.

So, sure, we can all sit in judgment of this woman - or not. That's your choice. And I'm not going to argue that point. But, if nothing else, the article recommends an interesting "safety check" to hopefully prevent it... it's called the "bag in back" technique - read on!

And now that the warm weather has arrived, it's just a very timely reminder that a car can heat up seriously fast - so please don't leave any living creature in your parked car - even if it's in shade or the A/C is turned on - it's just NOT worth the risk.  And you might want to use this "bag in back" trick when you DO have a kid or pet in the car.

The mind is a funny thing - and it can play tricks on you. Why not go the added step of an extra safety precaution to prevent a terrible tragedy?

What about all the husbands left in car's while the wife goes shopping?

Are we not in danger as well?

All kidding aside... ONLY asshats and irresponsible people would leave kids or pets in the car during hot weather.   In fact NO ONE should leave kids left alone in a car anytime...    The world is not what it once was.

Some cars are even coming with Rear Seat Reminder functionality...

Hyundai is rolling out Rear Occupant Alert in select 2019 vehicles. GM introduced its own Rear Seat Reminder in the 2017 GMC Acadia and has since been expanding it across several Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models. In August, Nissan announced it would add the Rear Door Alert to the 2018 Pathfinder, with other models to follow. Both GM’s and Nissan’s systems monitor the rear doors for activity, and both display a reminder message on the instrument cluster as the driver is exiting the vehicle. GM’s emits a series of chimes, while Nissan’s can chirp the horn.

Did she up her insurance policy on you recently? If so, then YES... you're in danger. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
