Cutting the cord

Recommended Posts

Currently trying out Hulu live tv. I like it so far, my only issue is the guide and occasional freezes in the picture. I have basic Comcast channels now and 60mbps internet. The Comcast channel selection at this level is garbage and Hulu selection is much better and includes live channels. It will cost me about $53 per month for Hulu and $80 for upgrade internet service. My kids like it because they can watch on their devices and my tv supports Hulu from the tv menu.

I had planned on cutting the cord in December since I already have Android TV boxes in all my rooms and was going to go with Hulu Live as well.  When I called Comcast they told me that just internet would be $89.99 for my level (150 mbs).  Since I was paying over $230 a month at the time I was ok with that.  The loss prevention specialist i was speaking to was throwing deals at me left and right, which i politely refused and insisted that I cancel everything except the net.  She finally said that she had one last offer for me, I keep everything the same, nothing changes, $99 a month.  Blew me away.  I needled her until she gave me a 2 year guarantee on the price and it was settled.

I'm glad it worked out this way since I really dont believe that Android TV boxes/ firestick, tv are ready to take over for cable.  Same with Hulu live.  Navigation is clunky and counter intuitive and with Kodi there's simply too many sub sections for the average user.  While it's no problem for me my wife and Daughter have a hard time with it when Im not around.  So now I get 2 years to see how they improve before I have to make that decision.  Yay me!  LOL

$100 a month is a really good deal but I am so over Comcast. We have the basic package of internet and 30 channels but we pay extra for higher internet speeds and the internet SUCKS. I don't know if it's our location or what but we get booted off WiFi multiple times a day and they have been continually removing our basic channels to get us to pay for a more expensive package.

Very soon we will be booting them but we have to figure out what will be our next step. Really we can do without TV channels, all we want is good internet for under what cable costs but it's hard to find apparently.

What’s crazy is Comcast will offer great deals on just internet to new customers. To loyal customers who have been with them for almost 20 years like me, you get the shaft basically. The Hulu interface needs some work but I am over calling Comcast to leave and then lowering the prices. Hulu and youtubetv are good because no contract. If I pay $90 a month for internet I am only paying $10 more than what I pay now and get way more content and don’t have to pay Comcast for boxes and dvr fees. Comcast will give good deals to stay if you pay high monthly subscription costs but I only have the basic package so there isn’t much they can offer me. Cable tv is going the way of rabbit ears unless costs come way down. They are losing a lot of subscribers every month and a lot of new subscribers gravitate towards online services like amazon, Apple, youtubetv and Hulu.

Been trying to ditch cable for a while. The kids mostly watch Netflix and a YouTube so live channels are mainly for ya old folks. Paying Comcast 250/month for phone, internet, and TV. I just signed up for DirectTV Now to get the free AppleTV. Going to see if that’s good enough for cable replacement.  Ideally I’d like to just get Internet via Comcast and DirectTV Now for television. Should be able to get that down to 150/month.

I looked at direct tv now also. They offer nice discounts if you are an att mobile subscriber. The nice thing with most of these services is that if you don’t like it you leave and get something else. Hopefully fios internet comes into my area and the Comcast internet prices will come down.

Ditched the triple play 1.5 years ago.  Wished we had done it sooner.
Went from $220 a month to about $115. Cablevision gave us deal for $40 internet only.  PlayStation Vue, Netflix & Hulu satisfy all family viewing needs.  No contracts.  Use Ooma for home phone service.

Comcast is $92 a month for 150mbps internet and $99 a month for 400mbps internet only.

I did this about two years ago, ditched Cablevision triple play that went over $200 without any premium stations.  Put Oooma in for the phone and went with PS Vue for TV.  I pay $40 for almost all the locals and lots of other stations.  They have on demand for lots of stuff and you can cloud DVR any show you subscribe to for free and it stays they for 28 days with no limit on how many shows.  You can also pay more for premium stations.  What is nice you can have five streams at a time, watch it on your TV, computer, tablet or phone.  A little while ago they went to letting you watch any live stream anywhere in the US.

I had the same crap with Cable vision, great deals for new customers, crap for long time customers.  I got someone in the retention department and cut a deal for a year to get 200mbps internet for $49 a month.  They just jacked it $20 but I don't care as I am outa Jersey in a month.  They are offering their Altice One service now and without a contract will guarantee the price for two years for $99 a month for Internet, phone and premium TV all for the one box.

Going to see if I can get them to come down on the 400mbps internet but Comcast is the only game in town for internet around here.

What do you need 400 mbps for?  I have 200 and probably won't get that fast when I move, just don't really need that much capacity even with lots of streaming.

True probably don’t need it. Will see which one I can get a better deal on.

I'll disagree, PSVue is far better than the cable navigation and the DVR is fantastic.  For the rest of the streaming I've used Roku and Apple TV.  Both interfaces are far superior to the cable experience and at this point better than TiVo.  The cable companies have to offer you this pricing going forward because if they don't you'll just cancel.  I pay 49.99 for 100MBS fios in NYC and use PS Vue.  I liked the channel selection better than Hulu, although I have the 7.99 Hulu subscription, and the interface as fantastic.  Sony has made almost as good as their gaming console interface.  Simple to use, automatic offering of on demand if you surf to a show already in progress, very good.

I switched to PS Vue 20 months ago.

Keep in mind that a typical Netflix HD stream is 5mbps. 25 if UHD(4K).

Also keep in mind, you need a device that can actually stream what your internet is providing. It doesn't matter if you have 100 or 200 mbps, if the device you are streaming on can only do 20 mbps.

I'm with you on PS Vue, the interface is great and you get to store as much as you want for 28 days.  As you may recall I am making my move to Florida the middle of next months an am trying to decide if I keep PS Vue or do something else.  Initially we will be renting a house in Fruit Cove (St Johns) until we decide on something permanent.  My understanding is we have a choice between ATT and Comcast for cable, but it looks like with a $20 HD Antenna we can get reception of over 50 stations.  If I go that route I need to come up with some sort of box to allow me to DVR OTA broadcast.

There are a couple of choices here but one of my guys at work uses Tablo.  He is a real geek and likes it a lot.  It may be worth a look for you.

It may not have an attena solution with it but you can get a Mohu Leaf for a good price and can hang it on a wall and actually paint over it.

Thanks, have heard good things about Tablo.  I had looked into Mohu for where I am now, but we get zero OTA due to the mountains.  Seems where I am going to be you can almost hang a paper clip up and get good reception :)

I was looking at PsVue. Started with DirectTV Now because I got free HBO with my ATT mobile plan and they were offering a green AppleTV for 3 months pre-paid.   The Now interface and guide isn’t as good as Xfinity. Maybe once the 3-months is over I’ll try PSVue

I'm on direct TV now. I agree the guide needs work. I will point out that it has a coupel things going for it that are on obvious.

1) HBO via them is $5 a month as opposed to $15 a month for an over the top streaming plan. THis gives you full HBOGo access, which is spiffy if you like hbo.

2) If you like hockey, your regional sports network includes MSG and MSG+. Direct TV NOW is literally botht he easiest and cheapest way to stream hockey in the portion of NJ in the NY metro area. No VPN BS to mask your location.

Most of the flyers games are in CSN Philadelphia.  That’s not on DirectTV Now but I thought it was on PSVue

Att will give you hbo even without directv now.

it's not only comcast, it's all cable companies that shaft their loyal customers, they have absolutely no loyalty to their loyal customers. I cut the cords about 4 years ago because optimum would not give me the same offer as they do to new customers, even though I have been with them for over 20 years. I put an antenna in my attic and, about 20 broadcast channels and I have netflix. Never really had a need to ever call optimum back in search of new offers. To be honest, I would get rid of them all together if I didn't need them for internet.

That is a good deal, I did that when the previous Apple TV had just come out.  Same deal, you pay $105 for the Apple unit which was only available at the time for $149 and you also get three months of the TV service for free.  Can't beat that deal.

The only issue is I don't really like the AppleTV as much as I like the Amazon FireTV Box, but we use it on the kitchen TV.

I’m the opposite. Prefer the AppleTV, though I only have the FireStick to compare it to. I hear the FireTV is a lot less sluggish.

Either way, I signed up for Now because of this deal. Whether I stay with them after July remains to be seen.  We are not using it much yet but I’m still weening the fam off the Xfinity boxes.

The Fire Box is much better than the stick, I have an original stick and a new stick and there is no comparison. The sticks are sluggish. Also you can run the box on an Ethernet Cable not just on Wi-Fi.

I called Comcast this week and they gave me the 250 mbps internet for $75 a month for one year which would normally be 92.95. Canceled all of the tv service and the most they would offer was to lower the dvr cost by $5 a month. I wanted to lol at the girl but she was nice and she gave me the better price on the internet.

Bumping an older thread.   Me and my wife recently cancelled our Fios TV service.  It's been about 10 days and I am fine without it.  We use a Firestick for streaming, and watch what we like.
