MP5 Variants

The pistols are the way to go. IMO the MP5 as a rifle looks strange unless it’s a sbr with a can on it. (What the GSG is trying to mimic)

Exactly.  If I were to get a rifle version, it would have to be an MP5SD_ variant so it can at least look fairly cool...until I move somewhere where I could have a 2 stamp gun.  I don't like the look of the thinner fake cans on the MP5 non-SD guns.  Same would go for a PS90 if I were to ever buy one - it would have to have a fake can to cover that ridiculous barrel sticking out what looks like yards in front of the gun....

That said, the SP5K pistols without the front MP5K handgrip just don't do it for me visually - I fell in love with the MP5K exactly as an MP5K is.  What is needed to legally get the front MP5K style handgrip?  SBR stamp? Or is that a firearm or nothing special in a free state?  Some of the other pistols (like the palmetto one above) I'd think I'd almost rather have the option of a standard MP5A4-length front end with a brace at the back...

Doesn't matter to me now, can't have (or afford) any of the really fun ones while I live here anyway...so GSG it is!

Bump

Ive had a MP5 itch lately. The rifle versions of the MP5 made by Zenith and Omega seem never to be in stock. Would it be possible to recreate it with a pistol gun and have it registered as a rifle?

For example, buy this pistol:

https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/products/omega-9mm-full-size-pistol-atlantic-exclusive

Then add this barrel extension:

https://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/MP5-Fake-Suppressor-Barrel-Extension-82p18000.htm

And this stock:

https://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/HK-MP5-A2-Fixed-Stock-POF-83p18259.htm

Assuming you had it sent to a gunsmith or FFL for assembly prior to taking possession, you’ve fulfilled everything to make it pass the AWB in terms of features. Would a FFL then be able to register it as a rifle as I take possession?

Yes you can do this with the caveat that it can never be turned back into a pistol again. That barrel extension would have to be pinned and welded to the barrel and the length would have to be at least 16 inches. One of the members here did this with a AK pistol turning it into a Krink clone.

From HK too:

Now, being legal in NJ is a different story.

I bought one of these when first released a couple years ago and it is really worth it. Now I have to dump 400 bucks for the suppressor barrel for it as I’m shooting my Sig MPX all the time for the can.  On a side note the Sig MPX-P is nuts accurate.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but has anyone gotten a ptr mp5 rifle by now? It's the ptr 608 model and is nj legal out of the box.

The NJ Legal model is actually the PTR 308 9R - https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/products/ptr-9r-ptr-308-new-jersey-legal

I’ve been waiting on PTR. I’ve seen some rumors that they be making a version with a short barrel and a pinned fake suppressor like Omega does. I’m probably leaving NJ in he next 2 years so I would like a version that I can easily convert to an SBR in the future without having to cut or replace the barrel.

I think it looks better than the Zenith Z-5

vs the PTR-9R PTR308 NJ legal

A lot cheaper too.  Yeah the foregrip isn't the same as the original HK style... but it has the integral rail.  Navy style grip instead of the older SEF style.

Omega OM9-R A2 has the fake "suppressor" look around the barrel and the HK style handguard and navy pistol grip.

Both the Zenith and Omega are over $2k, while the PTR-9R is $1600'ish.

If I had the money.... I'd probably go with the PTR

Another option would be to get the PTR pistol and buy this barrel extension (fake suppressor) and pin and weld it. Throw on a  stock and register it as a rifle and you would be good to go. Looks like the Omega but still in the $1700 range

If you dont like the foregrip, the traditional MP5 one should be compatible as well
