Shotgun in your vehicle, what's the NJ laws?

Recommended Posts

We all know the handgun rules but I don't know if rifle/shotguns were ever addressed.

Thanks for your help!

Soooooo, with a NJFID card you can keep an unloaded, preferably "cased" shot gun in your trunk, right?

Handguns must be the same and ONLY permitted from point a to point b (ie Home/range)

Just remember to stay away from schools, military installations and other "Gun Free Zones" while transporting your UNLOADED long guns and you're pretty much covered.  The NJFPID card allows transportation w/o the "Directly to & from Rule" being enforced so long as you have ONLY long guns with you.  50 long guns placed on top of a .38 snubby buried somewhere in your trunk where you can't reach it w/o minutes of unpacking and "Directly to & from Rule" APPLIES once more....even if it's empty and you have ZERO shells for the hand gun :)

Since when did your firearms ID card need to be on your person just to ride around with a long gun in your trunk if you wanted to?

I never said or implied that it had to be on your person or in the vehicle with you.  By the letter of the law, as written, it says you have to have a NJFPID granted to you in order to make use of the EXEMPTION.  It (the law itself) never mentions that you have to have the card on your person.  It also doesn't stipulate a fine or even a warning for NOT having it on your person.  FWIW, unescorted minor children can transport (on their bicycles) & possess long guns while using their hunting licenses (that they MUST WEAR on their backs) during appropriate hunting seasons.  Said minors are too young to apply for FPID cards, thus NO mention of REQUIRING a FPID card in order to transport legally.  Little Jimmy or Kaitlyn haven't gotten locked-up YET for stopping at the Candy Store or gas station on the way to or from hunting to get refreshment or use the restroom :)

To my understanding, "cased" is optional, but "unloaded" is critical.  Once you load it, you have committed a felony; however, as Nappen and others have stated, in the case of a dire emergency, the courts would likely not look too harshly on someone who threw a few shells in (which with a little practice, can be done quite quickly) to defend himself and family.

Oh the stupidity if NJ gum Laws...who was the one that thought this makes any sense?

I'm waiting.gif

Some do, especially the ones that allow kids to hunt!  As for the rest, well, a pile of manure they are!

Do you see the hypocrisy here? Hand  Guns are only allowed from point a to point b, do go not pass go, do not stop and pee.

Rifle/shotgun (which can wield a lot more damage) you can carry it like a baseball, bat and glove in your trunk, no problem...

Ponderous man.

Thanks. I must have misunderstood.

Why can't kids hunt?

They can & should whenever possible.  I never intended for you to read my post the way you're reading it, lol!

"Some do, especially the ones that allow kids to hunt!  As for the rest, well, a pile of manure they are!" was meant to be interpreted as SOME laws DO MAKE SENSE, especially those that allow kids to hunt.

In general, most here need to take themselves out of the equation when asking a question.  By that I mean posters need to stop thinking & asking about narrow specifics of NJ gun law that only involve themselves, and instead learn the EXEMPTIONS & EXCEPTIONS, for they are your friends, your SALVATION!  Non-hunters need to climb-out of their foxholes, pick-up a NJF&W compendium laying on the gun store counter free for the taking & explore how 10 yr olds can qualify to use shotguns afield and when they can hunt alone with said scattergun.  By doing so, education "happens" and most of the most often asked questions answer themselves.

If you're not breaking a law, don't seek permission of the state from within "the written word" (2C statutes on gun law) to do whatcha wanna do.  Example:  "Can I leave a loaded shotgun in my house?"  The written law doesn't say you CAN or CAN'T, so therefore you CAN!  Interpretation of NJ gun law requires critical thinking and application in order to grasp it.  Confusing oneself by concentrating on the law that prohibits you (and starts-out by saying ALL GUNS ARE ILLEGAL) only compounds the situation.  Learning to live by the EXEMPTIONS & EXCEPTIONS is the key, so concentrate on THEM instead of reading "that you must have a yellow card to transport a firearm", cause IF that were the case, only NJ residents with a yellow card would be attending matches (featuring all 3 platforms, singly or in unison--a 3Gun Match) instead of what we currently enjoy which is folks from all over can come & compete at NJ matches. Widows that own their deceased husband's firearms don't get locked-up for taking them to EXEMPT locations, INCLUDING THE RANGE to SHOOT THEM.  It's not an overnight project.  It takes YEARS of study to fully understand it, and with every new gun bill signed into law, changes need memorized (what can I do with my 15 round mags during the "Grace Period"?).

How many residences can I store my guns at?  ALL OF THEM!

Am I limited to how many residences I may own/use/rent?  NO!

Is traveling with HP rounds illegal?  NO!  Just keep your travel to EXEMPT locations!  Moving w/ HP?  Visit a range on the way!

How many Exempt locations can I go to in a single day?  As many as you want, so long as you only reasonably deviate!

Can I loan a friend a firearm to shoot a match with me at my club?  YES, so long as your club files a list of its' members w/ NJSP, you're GTG for 8 consecutive hours, ANY PLATFORM including hand guns!

Learn what "normal" is at private clubs.  It's MIND BLOWING, lol!

Stay SAFE & have a great summer.  Hope to see you all at one of NJ great ranges!  Exercise your RIGHTS & take a friend SHOOTING!
