Phil Murphy wants to make it a lot more expensive to buy a gun in N.J.

Recommended Posts

surprised no one's mentioned this little gem. here's the money shot:

The plan would raise the cost for handgun purchase permits from $2 to $50; firearms identification cards from $5 to $100; handgun carry permits from $50 to $400; retail gun dealer licenses from $50 to $500; and wholesaler/manufacturer licenses from $150 to $1,500, among other hikes.

the laughable one to me is the handgun carry permit. may as well make it $10,000 while you're at it.

do you know what i want to see? a federal law mandating that legislators who sponsor and executives who sign into law bills which are deemed to be unconstitutional must be held accountable financially for their transgressions. these ppl know this stuff won't stand legal challenge, but they don't care because it's the taxpayer who foots the bill, not them. it's how you get wave after wave of ludicrous nonsense in these states.

Retired LEOs still have to pay the fee, don't they? Get the popcorn!

And all this will stop the Bloods in Trenton from purchasing guns, how?

Unless their laws are challenged they will stand.

Unfortunately true.  I don't believe a challenge will even do it.  A fee is a fee.  I wonder if this will be all inclusive.  No more extta fees for prints and NICS.  Ha! I crack myself up sometimes.

I'd bet if it went to numbers like that they'd loosen things up just to get the money for socialist programs.

Don't worry, I'm sure they will get exempted.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.  They're not exempt from a lot now.  And he's a greedy pig sucking every penny he can.  Don't forget he feels Nj residents don't care how much they pay in fees and taxes as long as we get more.  What "more" is only he knows.

this is going to take several changes to the laws if the cash is going to worm its way back to the state coffers.

Wonder how that will work....

The idiot could apply it to buy back programs.  Idiotic stuff like that will make it seem justifiable.

I wonder how close this change brings the whole system to being an unreasonable burden.   From what I read somewhere else the proposed fees would be the highest in the country.   Over $200 for your first handgun (foid, p2p, fingerprint, bgc).

Democrats defy Phil Murphy by passing their own budget, and he links them to Christie

The bitter war of words between Democrats that could lead to another state government shutdown in New Jersey raged into the night during the year's longest day.

The state's Democrat-controlled Legislature defied Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy by passing their own state budget Thursday night, despite the new governor's vow to veto it.

And the body's top lawmaker accused Murphy of being dishonest and dictatorial.

That came hours after closed-door negotiations broke down, with Murphy standing by his tax hike proposals and alleging his fellow Democrats are foolishly following in the footsteps of the state's previous -- unpopular -- governor, Republican Chris Christie

As both houses of the Legislature narrowly passed their $36.5 billion budget -- which Murphy has already vowed to veto -- state Senate President Stephen Sweeney said he's "never seen" a governor's administration with "such a lack of focus and a lack of honesty, the way they've handled this."

Sweeney's response?

"Are we all Christiecrats or whatever the hell he wants to call us?" the Senate president said hours later at a news conference at the Statehouse down the street. "Or are we Democrats who just don't agree? We are the Legislature. And we're not gonna be dictated."

"It's not Goldman Sachs," Sweeney, D-Gloucester, continued about Murphy, who is a former executive at the Wall Street investment banking firm. "We're not gonna be told what to do. We're gonna be equal partners."

State Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin -- the state's second-highest-ranking lawmaker -- also criticized Murphy, but with less vitriol. He said Murphy has been too "dogmatic" in negotiations.

"He's been disagreeable instead of disagreeing," Coughlin, D-Middlesex, said. "I think we had the opportunity to make real progress, and we failed."

Wow, they be soundin' like fightin' words...

I think there's a lot of stuff going on here... most of it personal ambitions...

First, Sweeney felt he was entitled to be Governor just by merit of his years of service... he's our own little Hillary in a way... and he's seething with resentment because Murphy came in and "stole" that from him. Who knows? This feud could last a long time based on that simmering anger alone.

Second, I'm sure Sweeney still has hopes of being governor at a later date. He's a lifelong politician, and he knows that Murphy the political neophyte is FOOLISHLY underestimating how fed up New Jerseyans are with the state's high costs. I'm sure Sweeney's clever enough to know that if he lets Murphy do HALF of what he wants to do, it will activate too many normally apathetic voters and they will usher in another Republican governor (and thus ushering OUT Sweeney's chances of being Governor... yet again).

So, based on that, I predict Sweeney's going to stand firm - even if it means a closure on the holiday weekend. After all, Sweeney can spin it like he's "standing up for the middle class" which will play to his advantage. Murph will crumble... and lose much of his political momentum in the process... becoming almost a neutered incumbent. As I see it, he just doesn't have the political skills that Sweeney does.

I don't know about you folks, But I find it disturbing that  not one word  has been said about how we can cut the budget .

Its business as usual in New Jerkey, Typical hey lets tax our way out of our spending issues.

Gun tax

 Millionaires tax

business tax

 Plastic bag Tax

Raise the Sales tax

WHAT DILUSIONAL FK WORLD DO THESE DEMOCRATS LIVE IN.

I’ve said this before, they are using the cigarette rules on us. “We are going to add this tax and this fee and use it for x services and it will make millions for x.” Then in the same breath, “ we want to stop the use of guns/cigarettes so the higher taxes will keep people from buying them” They really want the second outlook but they know they can get people to sign on for the first even though they are exactly opposites. If no one buys guns/cigarettes then no taxes will go towards X so they are selling a bill of goods in the first premise, a tax windfall, in order to obtain the second, reduce sales of a good.

If they put this in place for guns though, they are in for a rude awaking because cigarettes are not a protected right where guns are. I doubt any reasonable judge will say adding $200 to the cost of a $200 snub nose revolver or shotgun is not akin to a poll tax. However finding a reasonable judge may be the issue and take some time.

Mrs. Peel and others have made some great points, but the fact remains we gun owners are viewed as a rather insignificant voting block, hence easy targets. All these bills, and more, will be approved because if it saves just one life....$50 permits, $100 fid cards? Can anyone say confiscation?

I wouldn't hold up much hope in  the courts regarding fees. NYC fee is $350 for a handgun premises permit  per handgun. renewable every 2 years. A court ruled it constitutional.

I have no idea how but they did.

Bingo!  Not to sound like Debbie Downer, but if it is legal in NYC it will be law here too eventually.
