Charlespsu 1 Posted July 11, 2018 My father passed away recently. He had one gun- a Remington Police Magnum 870 shotgun. We went to purchase this gun together and it has some history to me. My siblings have offered me the gun and I'm thinking I can just drive to his apartment in PA, take possession of an unloaded shotgun, and bring it back here to NJ. I have an SUV and can transport shotgun in a small closed compartment. Unloaded of course- I could even break it down and plan to put a cable lock through it. I have an FOID(not address matching as I moved within the same town and haven't changed it) Anyone think this is pretty reasonable? Do I need to do an FFL transfer? As you can tell, I'm above board and I don't want to come even close to skirting a law....NJ has a habit of making citizens criminals. Thanks so much! Charlespsu 1 Posted July 11, 2018 I should add, I have read the following on NJ State Police and belief I'm A-OK here. The gun is certainly legal in NJ and I'm permitted to own it.If I inherit a firearm what must I do?Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:58-3j, a firearm purchaser identification card and/or a handgun purchase permit shall not be required for the passing of a firearm upon the death of an owner thereof to his/her heir or legatee, whether the same by testamentary bequest or by the laws of intestacy. The firearm must be legal to possess in New Jersey and the person receiving the firearm shall not be prohibited by N.J.S.A. 2C:58-3c before receiving the firearm. If the heir or legatee does not qualify to acquire and possess the firearm, then ownership may be retained for a period not to exceed 180 days provided the firearm is transferred to the chief law enforcement officer of the municipality or the superintendent during such period.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Vicious 138 Posted July 11, 2018 Sorry for your loss. I believe this fits the bill for inheritance. If I were you, I would delete the topic/post (to keep this private) and go pick up my gun.
Rob0115 1,105 Posted July 11, 2018 Sorry about your dad. Are you prohibited from owning firearms? If not take his, now your, shotgun home and don’t worry about it.
