Home security cameras

Recommended Posts

Have not had a problem yet..... but now I bought a QuickLift, and between that, the tools and of course the GTO.... I would like to just get a single wifi Camera to monitor if someone enters my garage....

Thinking of the Arlo at this point....

Just want one camera that can be monitored from a smart phone....

I use D-Link.. they work well... email alerts.. ability to upload to FTP etc.. pan and tilt.. day and night auto modes.. sound and motion activated... would not hesitate to buy more..

HD where you are looking to capture detail like entrance areas.. SD where you are more just monitoring..

We got a Ring Pro doorbell camera. I am very happy with it. Ring also sells individual cameras that can be hard wired or solar powered, and a motion sensor light with camera built in.

If the security cameras are as good as the doorbell, you should be pleased.

I like ring but be aware you have to subscribe to their cloud service to store any video

I know people will critique and bust my balls. But I've been using Foscam for many years and only replaced them years down the pike because sales or tech upgrades. I have several around the house. No subscriptions, easy setup and now, if desired, can record to a mem card, your puter , phone or whatever. Just needs electric and a wiffy signal.
I thought about the later like Ring, Nest, erc. All good, but expensive.
None of which are pan and tilt. Throw a Foscam in your garage for an average of 80 bux and you are good to go.

Not true. I can download video straight to my phone's Photo album.

I thought it was time limited without subscription. Like they keep it for 24 hours.  You can manually download the vid within that window.  Admittedly it's been 2 years since I set it up.

I bought some of those dlink cams for a dept that didn't want to spend any money.  They worked, after a fashion.  6 months later I built them a real system with a dvr.   The dlink quality was meh, forget the motion detection and they needed rebooted every few days.  They sure were cheap.   If I can find one I'd give it to you.  Pretty sure they were tossed.  I can look Thursday when I'm back.

Not trying to cheap out..... but if it does the job, why pay more..... Otherwise it seems Arlo is leading the way...

Good reviews.... take one for the team

I already have a full wired system with a 500 Gig DVR.  This stupid thread Is forcing me to buy the 2 camera Arlo Pro system because I am fascinated at what they do for $200. I simply must have it now. Thanks guys! I could have bought another 1K of 9mm with that money!:banghead:

In for info also - Looking for a home system with 6-8 weatherproof cameras, and I want the cameras *wired*, not wireless.

I recall there was a member here who had a lot of professional experience with security systems and had better alternatives to the "costco level" systems.

POE(power over ethernet) is the way to go.  I would stick To 2mp or 4mp cameras as they are 16:9(hd,wide screen) form factor.  3mp and 5mp systems are 4:3(portrait).   For outdoors, 5mm to 8mm seems to be about right focal length.  Ive done a number of varifocal cams, the are sometimes difficult to get the focus perfect.  Indoors or tight space 2.5mm is good.   The number of LEDs and distance are fairly useless.  You need something on the cams but if you want to actually see something at night with any quality you need an IR illuminator assuming no street lights or other sources.    Although there is a clear picture advantage to 4mp cams, they can really chew up disk space.  Buy surveillance hard drives, like western digital purple.   I've not found the outdoor motion detection all that great(birds, trees, rain, snow, spiders, clouds set it off)so I record 24/7 on my personal dvr.  Indoors at the plant i,work at motion is good.   For 8 2mp cams, 8tb will get you a 17ish days recording period.

You do get what you pay for.    There are some reasonable consumer brands though.  Most of what I've found on cheap systems is that the cams either suck picture wise or need restarted every week or so.   Many are all rebranded hikivision or one if the other big China vendors.

Nick, ya know I luv ya man, but that statement eludes to just cheap stuff in general. I can show you I've been using my cams forever, show beautiful pix, no subscriptions, motion and more and you still won't accept them as a decent and cheap alternative. Uga boogah. [emoji848][emoji6]

By the way, I've also been in the industry for decades prior to retiring. Not like I talk out of my arse. [emoji51][emoji16]

Hey! I'm not the oldest here but got a lot of experience behind me. Simply put, I learned on vacuum tubes before transistors, only had teletype before 'puters. My ham radios were point to point soldering of components, (no pc boards), and tubes. I taught color codes to techs that claimed knew electronics when I was in grammar school.
Ran one of the most popular BBS's in Northern NJ before there was an internet. My career and experience for many moons has been electronics and computers which I have diplomas for both.

But I digress. Use what you want. I gave you a cheap and reliable option.

BTW, how many times over the past couple years has this topic reared its head in other posts? [emoji6] lmao

PS: Other than well name cams you'll find on Amazon and the like, are the same cameras, just rebranded. Caveat Emptor!

I have one of my cameras (all are "wired") attached to the soffit under my roof. Should that particular camera (and/or any that our outdoors) be "grounded" especially?  We had a Thunder Bumper down here on Sat., and I could swear that one lightning strike hit way too close to home.  The thunder crack was immediate! And the circuit breaker on which the cameras reside, popped. I then discovered later that one AC Adaptor in a power strip on that circuit got cooked, and kept the circuit breaker popping. Nothng else seems to have been affected, though.  I'm wondering it there's any additional grounding that might be needed for the cameras that are outdoors...

Not going to help. I had a couple blow the transformers during one of the major storms. Took out one of my cams too.
If its under an eave, it won't most likely take a direct hit. Sounds to me you were affected by surges. Despite what they say, surge protectors don't always work.
I'm sure Nick will concur.[emoji3]

If it were lightning, you would have lost more than a transformer.

Friend of mine in NC had a strike in his neighborhood. Almost everything he had got whacked. Lost his entertainment center, (all on surge protectors), his phones, a printer, his fridge and a few other things I cannot recall.

[mention=5135]bhunted[/mention]. Lmao...yeah I get it.

There are so many factors driving video today hat we forget the basic tenets of surveillance.

You can take a 5 mp camera and if it isn't placed correctly [distance to target], if there is not adequate lighting, if there is not adequate power...all.poe is not the same.  If there are not correct calculations for archive. ..you are left with a waste of money.

What I find mostly, after being pulled into projects after the fact or reviewing what others are proposing - is that truly you get what you pay for.  I would rather piss on a live spark plug than deploy hikvision.

Want something that is kinda reasonable and will do what it says it will do in a prosumer platform...or lower end commerical....  digital watchdog. ...  hey the cap works and will work residentially and lower tier commercial.

I am not slamming or detracting what others have success with.  The offshore brands are making a huge push as witnessed by the huge section this year at ISC West.....  amazing the price point and quality of some products. ....

That all being said....if you do not understand the minutiae of surveillance,  let someone whom does, help you.   Hey its neither rocket science by a long shot nor is it surgery.... [emoji4]

Nick, I'm not knocking your advice. All valid stuff. (Don't knock pissing on a spark plug, you won't need viagra, lmao).
But he wants one camera. Wants to stay cheap. The Foscams are great for that.
Even if they go tits up, toss it up like a baseball bat and whack it on the way down.
The manufacturer is pretty good. They sent me a new cam after one was faulty.
You need nothing for these cams except power. Period.

I have about 6 online on my property. They have indoor and outdoor models. What even some of the other fore mentioned products don't have is ptz. Its great.
They all have motion detection and all of mine dump feeds to a directory on my main computer which gets backed up to Carbonite. I'm here majority of the time. But when we go away, we use a real robust cam software called BlueIris. This software constantly monitors the cams functionality too through watchdog. If it feels the cam is having connection issues, it will auto reboot the cam. Software, again, is fantastic and is compatible with tons of cams of all types.
Check it out.
