New from South Orange!

Recommended Posts

.... ” It was originally called “Taylor Ham” and although the name was changed in 1906 many of us in North Jersey still call it simply, “Taylor Ham.”   Think of it as Kleenex is to tissues, Taylor Ham is to Pork Roll. "

Careful.... we just may be showing our age. [emoji23]

What the fuck is Taylor Ham?

It’s that stuff that looks and tastes like a pork roll. As someone who grew up in South Orange (but long gone)...we called in Taylor Ham! Welcome to the forum and the getting harder to live here everyday state of NJ.

You guys and gals are ridiculous. I actually work at a Deli in South Orange so I am very familiar with the Taylor Ham vs. Pork Roll contoversy.

Also @Mrs. Peel thanks for letting me know about the shooting contests and such! I'm looking forward to being more involved soon!

Be careful not to call anything a contest or match, no one will show up.

Taylor originally called his product "Taylor's Prepared Ham", but was forced to change the name after it failed to meet the new legal definition of "ham" established by the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

I'm pretty sure it also fails to meet the legal definitions of 'meat', and possibly 'food'.

Yes, this is true..

Trying to teach these youngsters something about history gets really tiresome. They should learn from their elders!

Yeah, but that's what makes it so good!

True... It was originally called John Taylor's GENUINE Taylor CHOPPED Ham.

There, now it's official...

Close Thread.

If anyone thinks that's an actual "original" container, they're wrong.  That's fake - It was never "Taylor Ham" - it was "Taylor's Prepared Ham".  That is an image that showed up on TAPinto.net which is mostly north jersey "independent" news outlets, and it was from a discussion page - not official info.

This is the oldest picture/ad I've seen.  Definitely much plainer packaging.  Taylor logo looks correct too.image.jpg

Being 45 and growing up in Maplewood / South Orange I learned it as Taylor Ham...as in Taylor ham, eggs and cheese.

Then I educated myself when I moved to Somerset / hunterdon county...it’s now pork roll as in pork roll, eggs and cheese.  Now teaching my kids that it’s pork roll...or they can make their own breakfast.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.
    • I saw Lara's interview on Bannon's War Room, and that gave me pause for thought. Her conjecture depends primarily on the veracity of her sources. Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
