Flying with carry gun, with lay overs.

Recommended Posts

So it looks like I'm going to Arizona in October if my time off gets approved. I'm going to fly out with my 1911, but I'll have a layover in texas for an hour or two on the way. Itll be checked in my luggage, in its locked case (is the manufacturer case ok to fly with or do I need a new one?). Are there any concerns with the lay over? Anything I should know or do to make my flight easier?

I'll be flying out of Ft Myers Florida, so it's a friendly airport.

I wouldn't call a few hours a layover. Your bags will be loaded onto the next plane. Are you switching airlines? Are you taking possession of the bag? Probably not. Besides, its Texas. No worries.

Fair point. This is only the second time I'm flying with fire arms, so o just want to make sure I have all my bases covered.

Just a bit of warning: If your plane makes an unexpected stop (because of weather, etc.) in an unfriendly state, do NOT take possession of your bag that contains the firearm under any circumstances. That might mean camping out at the carousel and watching it go round and round. I know I am paranoid but there are stories of people getting in hot water for this.

The inner case that contains your firearm should be locked (and not with a TSA lock).

Also check with your airline as each can have their own rules.

I plan to fly to Alaska this Fall or Winter to see Aurora Borealis.

Do the airline charge a fee for the gun transportation?

I’ve never encountered a separate fee, outside of any usual checked bag fees.

Unless you are checking something big enough to trigger an ‘oversize’ charge
