Ear Pro upgrade options?

Recommended Posts

Been using a pair of Howard Leight impact sport electronic ear pro for several years, but I’m finding that as I do more outdoor events and wear them for longer I’m getting more discomfort and headaches.  I think this is mainly from the thin plastic-covered-foam earcups and having eye pro arms squeezed against my temples.

Is there a step up between the impact pro’s and something like Sordins/Pro Ears?

I want to keep electronic amplification/filtering but have something that I can wear all day with comfort.

What about electronic earplugs/in-the-ear ear pro?  Any of those worth looking at?

This is the answer you seek if you don’t  want to buy new ear-pro. Gel cups make a ton of difference.

You can also get a padded cover for the over the head band, if that is annoying you.

and also if you're wearing a cap....make sure that the over-the-head band isn't resting on "the headache button"

I got the Sordins a while back and can't say that I'm not completely pleased with them. The gel cups feel weird, but are comfortable all day long.

So if you can't say that you're not completely pleased, that means you're completely pleased?

Hasn't been a problem yet.  I think the gel cushions are going to help tremendously.

Both the Impact Sports and the Sordins have the same cutoff level - 82db.  What's the advantage of the Sordins in hearing protection?

They are really comfortable and for me that’s worth a lot. I shoot for 4 to 8 hours on training days so they are on my head for a long time. I have the Impact sports too. The comfort level is no comparison IMHO. If I had to wear them for an hour or two then it wouldn’t bother me. It’s all on how your going to use them.

Gel pads make a significant difference as well as what eye protection I use.  I've switched all my eye protection to ESS Crossbow Suppressors when I'm using  ear muffs due to the flat temples, the combination is just awesome.

Here's a link to the eye pro that has finally made a full day at the range tolerable.

These are amazing and so worth it if you use long guns or shoot in hot weather.

Very Interesting, thanks Mr. Stu!  Did some googling and came across this thread, I think I'm going to get a pair next time ebay has a ~20% discount coupon:

These look good, I am going to try them out.  I used ESS for firefighting goggles and didn't realize they also made shooting glasses.  Thanks for the recommendation!

FWIW, right now Optics Planet has them for $111 which is 14% off plus free 2 day shipping.

Got a pair of Etymotic Gunsports which seem to be exactly the same hardware, different branding/coloring, for $200ish via ebay.  Should arrive next week.

I use these and I like them a lot.  I can't tolerate over the ear headphones with long guns but I wanted electronics so this is were I landed and they are nice!

They are rechargable? Enty hadn't released their branded version when I got mine.

Yep, Etymotic's rechargeables are out - appear to be exact same thing as the Otto's except for color/branding:

Went with Peltor Tactical 500.. have not been to the range yet.. but really conformable and audio is decent..

How do you like them?  Thinking of going with the tac500 instead of the comtac3. I mostly shoot indoors, and the bluetooth looks nice to keep linked with my phone

Disclaimer: I had really basic ear protection in the past.. so my frame of reference is really poor.. with that said I LOVE them.. they are extremely comfortable... would buy again.. no real complaints.. but I have only been out with them once... going out again Sunday so if I notice anything weird I will update..

I love love LOVE my ESS Crossbow Suppressors for the exact reasons you've mentioned. So much more comfortable and better sealing from my ear protection. You also get the added benefit of them being ballistic rated for impacts, while most lower cost "shooting" glasses are not.
