Who's hunting this Saturday's pig hunt on the 27th?

Driving there that morning or staying overnight?

What weapon? I'm still undecided. Lol.

Has anyone did it before? What was average distance of shot? Considering bringing a bow or xbow.

I'm pumped. Looking forward to meeting some people. Getting some fresh pork.

I'm not going this time, but I've been before.

For range, it's likely to be 20 yards or less.

For the gun, 30-30 is popular but .223/5.56 has been used plenty of times too as well as 20g slug. You can even use a pistol if you want but personally I have reservations about the humane kill aspect - 9mm is not enough for a sure kill, .44 magnum would be fine if you're sure of your shot placement.

Bows have been used successfully in previous hunts too.

If you don't have a pickup truck, don't forget tarps or a body bag for the trip to the butcher. There will be blood.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I'll have tarps. A few. Lol. 2 hour drive. I'll probably stuff bags of ice in chest cavity for the ride.

Yeah I'm thinking either xbow or maybe the muzzleloader.

A few points

One, get a hotel for the night before the hunt. You will thank me later.

Two, your caliber should begin with a 3 or 4.  I.E, 30-30, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, 30-06, 44 magnum, 45-70, 450 Bushmaster.  Do not use a 223.  You'll thank me later.

Three, if you have a hitch get a luggage trailer.  The smell of death in your car will never go away.  You'll thank me later.

Four, bring eye protection/rags/rubber gloves and a piece of hazard tape to mark your bacon.  You'll thank me later.

Yeah I'm considering getting a room. My drive is a lil over 2 hours each way.

Weapon wise it will either be a .50cal muzzleloader or my crossbow. 150lb draw on it.

I've had plenty of dead critters in my rogue. Lol. Just had a 25lb gobbler in there on Saturday. I'm used to the smells.  Lol.

Tarps, rubber gloves, wet wipes, eye And ear protection. Bug spray. Blaze orange.

Who?  YOU ARE!

Staying Friday night & having dinner w/ some of our hunters!  Always fresh for the hunt is SAFER than half asleep from driving in the dark for 3 hours!

I've seen it all as far as weapons go.  My last harvest I used a .30-30 because I lost a cleaning patch down the bore of my muzzleloader & didn't wish to delay the hunt fishing it out.  Every harvest prior to that I use black powder (the REAL McCoy).  Most with my Uberti Colt Walker & .456 conical 225 grain bullets.  I enjoy the challenge.  Recently I've used a .50 cal sidelock (traditional) 1/2 stock percussion Lyman Trade Rifle w/ a 370 grain conical bullet.   I've seen crossbows do well.  The trick is to be SAFE & do as the guides tell you.  And don't be afflicted with "Buck Fever" & pump bolts or rounds into the ground instead of your hog!

Whatever ya do, please don't show-up with a $14K .338 lapua magnum w/ a heat imaging scope.  Stu knows all about THAT story :)

Pic #1 is the Marlin .30-30 last January

Pic #2 is the .50 cal Lyman Trade Rifle w/ 370 gr conical down the throat

Pic #3 is the Uberti Colt Walker Cap & Ball w/ a 52 gr rifle charge of 3Fg Goex real black powder under a Lee 225 gr .456 conical

Ice for the cavity is bought across the street at the Bainbridge Inn.  GPS address is 100 Race Street, Bainbridge, PA.  Jack will be emailing a reminder of what to bring, which was expertly edited by Sandy M., who's been on a few of these herself!

KNOW your equipment and be prepared for heavy brush.  This is not bench-rest shooting.  Bring a sling for main weapon & a sidearm w/ a holster that covers the trigger guard.

If it's warm, I'll have orange shirts for sale :)

Be at the boat ramp early so you can stow your Goody Bag in your truck.

See you this Saturday Nick!  (Or Friday night if you dine w/ me & the ladies)

Rosey, where do you guys stay? What hotel/motel?

We stay at a B&B in Mount Joy, PA (about 20 min. from boat ramp).  Ours is booked-up I think.  I'll do some research for you in the AM & get back to ya.  Lots of places around :)

I had a great time with some fine people. Thank you Rosey @Smokin .50 for doing what you do! I learned a lot and my kiddos are excited about bacon already.

It was said that these hogs can be too dumb to die sometimes. I saw one dummy that took FIVE 12ga slugs to the head before dropping, and I had to put way to many rounds of 556 into my harvest before it dropped.

That was probably the most surprising thing for me....how much lead these pigs took and didn't wanna quit. I was nervous about making my one shot count with my muzzleloader. Was fortunate to make a good shot and break it's neck but still ended up having to put a 357mag in the brainpan for all movement to cease.

Looking forward to some Good eats.

CNJFO ANNOUNCES HOG HUNT FUNDRAISER!  ONLY 10 SPOTS AVAILABLE!

The Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners ( http://www.cnjfo.com/store ) is holding a Hog Hunt on Sunday April 24, 2016 at 7:45 am on Mohr's Island, located just off Bainbridge, PA in the middle of the Susquehanna River.  The 150 acre island is home to Mohr's Exotic Island Hunts:  http://www.mohrswidowmaker.com and features farm-raised 250-300 pound Hogs that are harvested via a walking and stalking professionally guided Hunt.

I've used only black powder reproduction firearms to harvest the (3) Hogs I have thus far hunted on this great excursion, because I enjoy History and believe using antiques added more to the "fair-chase" aspect of my Hunts.  Twice with nothing more than a brace of Uberti Colt Dragoon and Colt Walker Cap and Ball Horse Pistols!  The third time I used my .50 cal Lyman Trade Rifle w/ 72 grains of Black Powder pushing a 370 grain T/C Maxi-Ball.  In the modern gun arena I've witnessed Hunters using compound bow w/ broadheads, .30-06 bolt-action, 12 ga. slugs, 8mm Mauser, .44 Magnum Ruger rifle, .44 Magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk hand gun, AR-15's w/ .223 and 5.56mm, even a TC Contender w/ a 7 x .30 Waters wildcat cartridge.  They all work with good shot placement!

This Hunt is good for a seasoned pro looking to get some exercise OR for the complete Noob that's never hunted before.  There's something for everyone and lots of friendly ball-bustin' too!  I've hunted the island with teenagers, Moms, and old men.  The Guides keep everyone SAFE and well-fed to boot as LUNCH on the island is included.  All animals are field-dressed, rinsed-out on the boat ramp and then it's your responsibility to pack in ice (available directly across the street from the boat ramp) and transport to your Butcher.  They have a Butcher near them that they recommend, as well as a Taxidermist, and these services need SEPARATE scheduling with the Mohr's Guide Service.  ALL services other than the guided Hunt itself are YOUR financial responsibility.  Of course a "Hold Harmless" must be signed prior to start of Hunt.

Your investment in this FUN Adventure is just $400 per animal, payable to CNJFO's online Store:  http://www.cnjfo.com/store .  This fee does NOT include butchering, transportation, ice bags for the animal's cavity OR a generous tip for our handsome Guides, so please plan on these additional expenses.  To reserve your spot on this great experience, please have your credit card ready and give us at least a $200 deposit per animal.  You'll be invoiced again in late March and mid-April with an additional payment of $100 due for each installment.  FULL payment is also an option, so it's entirely up to you!

      MY BUTCHER:

My Hogs were all processed at V. Roche and Son, Whitehouse Station, NJ, and since I want 1/2 fresh and 1/2 smoked, it runs me approx. $240 (payable 2 weeks after the Hunt, upon pick-up of butchered meats).

CNJFO, New Jersey's only 501©3 (Charitable and Educational) Tax-Exempt 2A corporation, is committed to ending "Justifiable Need" in New Jersey.  A significant portion of the proceeds will benefit our Justifiable Need billboard campaign seen here:  http://www.JustifiableNeed.com .

      SPONSORS NEEDED!

Interested parties (corporations and/or individuals) please contact me directly to learn how we can help your business and give you the recognition you deserve as a protector of our cherished Second Amendment freedoms!  Those that either can't go due to scheduling conflict or because they choose not to hunt can still help us with financial support in ANY amount!

Please forward all inquiries to me either here or on the CNJFO Hog Hunt Facebook Page:
      https://www.facebook.com/events/963338737112707/

Thanks all for your friendship and continued support of CNJFO!
