Are theses mags NJ legal

Recommended Posts

NJ law on "permanent" actually makes no sense.  If you have a mag neutered it must be permanent, but there is really no definition on what that means.  Pre ten round limit, when it was 15, if you got a Glock G17 mag which was 17 rounds you had to have the base plate epoxied to have it be legal - well that is what I heard.  Then about two years ago if memory serves me correctly, Glock came out with factory 15 round mags.  I got a few of those, and wonders how they could be legal.  My conclusion was that if they were legal, it was only because Glock called them 15 round magazines.  You see they are the same physical size as the 17 round mags, they just don't have inspection holes labeled 16 and 17.  If you take the basepad off there is a little free floating plastic block in them that prevents the follower from going all the way down.  If you take that block out and put the mag back together it is a fully functioning 17 round mag.  I asked a Glock rep on the phone and he told me to put the question in writing and they would get back to me.  They never did get back to me.  I always wondered if the socialists in Trenton might decide to go after a gun owner who had any of these claiming they violated the 15 round mag limit as these were not permanently 15 round mags.

A bunch of the restricted mags I've seen have been done this way, by different suppliers, and were claimed to be "NJ Compliant".. The baseplates could be removed and the blockers taken out. Even Glock seemed to think it was acceptable.

The only thing I know that's truly "permanent" is death.

in the past the metric was can it hold more than 15 rounds.. didn't matter how it was sold or labeled or anything like that... also there was a letter I would have to really dig that talked about mag modifications..

does anyone have the actual text of the law as it is now?

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.

Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
