I may have created my favorite old fashioned

Recommended Posts

I think I’ve got it.  Just had a couple may have one more and I’m not on gun broker.  Here’s what I did.

Made my own simple sugar from filtered water and regular white sugar.

2 oz Michters rye

2 dashes orange bitters

2 dashes regular bitters

1/2 tsp simple sugar.

I use a bar decanter with ice and then stir.

Strain into old fashioned glass.

Orange peel and lemon peel. Outside facing down twist to express some oil into the cocktail mixture.  Rub peels around rim then stand up in the glass.

For ice I bought a mold that makes large round ice (balls cubes would be square) so it doesn’t melt in the drink.

Molds:

heavenly.

Ironically I made two last night as well - although I did not get as fancy - and YES a Rye old fashioned is fabulous.

4 oz Evan Williams Bourbon

5 shakes of Angostura bitters

1/2 tsp of raw sugar

1/2 tsp water

Some cubes (hence not much water initially)

Mix as is directed

Gotta add some Amarena cherries......  :)

I popped the cap off a few beers last night. I've pretty much stopped drinking the hard stuff. I'm a finisher, as in if I open the bottle I feel I need to finish the bottle. Works out well with beer not so much with liquor.

When I drink bourbon, it’s ‘neat’, I don’t think I’ve ever had an ‘Old Fashioned’, but I’ll try your recipe!

I prefer rye for od fashioneds.  I do my bourbon neat as well.

I think I have some rye in my liquor cabinet. Maybe I’ll mix up one of these later today!

Cheers!

I'm a fiend for a good Old Fashioned, or it's sister cocktail, the Manhattan.

If you do make one, don't skip the muddling, use a fresh orange and never, ever forget the cherry.

a VO Old Fashioned is my favorite.  I inherited liking this drink from my father.  As mentioned above,  always muddle the fruit and dont forget the cherry.  Going out to dinner today at 6 and cant wait to have a drink.  Enjoy the day everyone!

Now you've got me doing it.   We have all kinds of alcoholic beverages in the house, bought just for the Thanksgiving Holiday, and now reading this thread made me whip up an old fashioned instead, following this recipe:

Esquire's Old Fashioned Recipe

I used Woodford Reserve bourbon; don't have Rye at the moment.

Why that recipe?  Because I loved step 3:

     3)  Crush the sugar with a wooden muddler, chopstick, strong spoon, lipstick, cartridge case, whatever.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What do y’all like for an ‘everyday sippin’ bourbon? (I don’t mean as in ‘every day, of course, more of a go-to casual drink sense).

Personally, Eagle Rare is my favorite. Buffalo Trace is a close second.

For an inexpensive bourbon, I can’t tell you how much I like Evan Williams. Great bang for the buck in the bourbon world!

I do not have the finances to learn too much about high end bourbons.

I treat myself to a bottle of Knob Creek or Bulliet or Buffalo Trace from time to time, but Evan Williams satisfies on a tight budget.

Coincidentally I came across this video yesterday, he has a similar recipe:

It is the same recipe.  Thanks for the video.

What bitters did you use and where did you get them?

Angostura from a local liquor store. I bought woodford cherry bitters in amazon that I would rather use in a Manhattan.

I sometimes drink Jack and Ginger....I’ve discovered Canada Dry Ginger Ale with lemon. Mix that with Jack...or Evan...

Man, that’s good!

There's a local ginger infused bourbon down here called Virgil Kaine, good stuff!  https://virgilkaine.com/
