Had a bit too much to drink? =P

Since when is a Mosin NOT a commie gun?  Or I suppose the M91 is a "sovereigns" gun... 91/30 is a commie gun, m44 SUPER commie gun. =P

But I am an equal opportunity lover....

Commie... (technically... its a Fin)

And some American love...

Mosin's aren't guns!   Where did you hear that?  It's a  pike and a club.  That you can make a bullet eject from it is incidental to its intended purpose.

Wouldn't that mean no Mosin's either.
I would leave them out anyway.

Eh, they're a hunk of steel attached to a piece of wood.   They work better as a bludgeon or a thrusting weapon.   In fact, they are such great clubs, I own 2 ;)

In the mean time, get a 22lr and go practice practice practice.

In reality, you need at least 12 guns or so, and we discussed this before... but as far as rifles.. you will eventually get/need...

1. 22lr for plinking, cheap shooting.  500 rounds for $20 vs 500 rounds for $125.

2. Home Defense type AR  16" or 14.5" plus brake in 223.

3. Bolt Action longer range 308... Remington 700, Savage 10, etc.

4. Mosin Nagant... cause everyone needs a Mosin... or 2... or 20.

5. AK variant.... because you need a backup gun for when your AR dies down.

Wait a second... what about a pistol caliber carbine in a common caliber like 9mm, .40, 45, etc?

They need some love too, ya know.

22’s are cheap to run but they are fun for like 10 minutes and then you will get bored. If you have the cash and want a scar, buy one! You only live once.. might as well go for it!

I agree to a point.  Depends on your purpose.

If you want to be proficient with a platform or just shooting in general, you need to shoot!  A SCAR is certainly cool... and if you look at it will always be fine... but can you be proficient with it without putting in thousands of rounds?  If you can, great...

That's the beauty of 22s and especially 22 conversion kits or guns like M&P 15-22... you can learn to handle it and train with it and then use your regular AR for shooting.

And if we are talking SHTF... are you really going to go shoot every piece of small game with 223?  Going to go through lots of ammo... that is why 22 has a distinct purpose.

Of course, also as a training platform for new shooters or calculating bullet drop and wind.

that's the problem... those safes are way too small and just limit you to how much you can buy.  Gun...Room

@CageFighter will be here soon to talk about the goodness that is the SCAR.

When it comes to rifles I think there is "cool" and there is "practical."

Really can't go wrong with a basic AR-15 to start with.  You can get a decent AR for around $450 brand new right now.

Here is a Ruger AR15 for $549 (although it will need to be NJ compliant)

Also browse our WTS forums.

If you want to spend a bit more for a NJ ready gun... @myhatinthering is selling his Colt.

If you want to go the AK route... @CageFighter has his...

Do keep in mind, AK prices for quality guns have shot up quite a bit with the ban on imports.  The US made AKs are quite frankly not that good.

Once you get a basic gun... you can expand out based on what your desires lead you to... be it more AKs, ARs, or what type of shooting you will do.... 3 gun, long range, etc.

Would suggest sticking to a basic popular caliber... 223/5.56 or 7.62x39 as it is plentiful and cheap.

You can go specialty such as 300 Blackout, 224 Valk,, 6.5, 6.8, etc... but it will prevent you from shooting as much unless you have deep pockets and quite frankly... unless you are shooting suppressed (300 blackout) or long distance (500+ yards) (224, 6.5, 6.8) are largely unnecessary and won't be appreciated.

In the long term, you are going to spend FAR more money on ammo than your guns.

I would also look into a 22lr gun, such as a Ruger 10/22, M&P 15-22 or even a Marlin Model 60.

Ruger 10/22 - classical gun, plenty of aftermarket for anything you want.

M&P 15-22 - "AR-15" in a 22lr.  Cheap to train with and just as fun if you are shooting rimfire matches with it.

Marlin Model 60 - tube fed 22.  The only good news that came out of Murphy is that now these are exempt from mag limits and you can have 15+ rounds.  Really fun guns.

Marlin 60....hands down best 22lr ever!!!! double made on any other 22 for a reason, more accurate, more reliable, better priced, old marlin is indestructible

Bully is right, buy an AR and then get different uppers.  don't buy cheap, never.  build cheaper if you must but dont buy cheap

Thinking about it more... in Socialist NJ... I really think tube fed Marlin Model 60's are extremely attractive right now.  It is the only "high capacity" rifle you can legally own.

To add to it... especially used, they are dirt cheap and can be had for around $100 and I see them for less at PA gun auctions.

You can also dress them up really nicely and to reload them, buy one of these for under $20....

Bushnell Rimfire 3-9 scope

100?  im in for 3!   where

With BOTH a 995 TS, and a CX4 in the family, I assure you, they get more love than a $12 dollar an hour "courtesan" over here! :D

I have a CX4, it's at the top of my list. Second would be my Scorpion. What's nice is that you can shoot them indoors without gong deaf, like with .223.

Haven't seen the Scorpion yet but I believe you abut it.

Inside or out, I'd be wearing hearing protection with most of what I shoot. After all my years working power tools, I have to save what's left. :icon_e_wink:

I’d go with a ruger10/22 or mp 15-22.  Learn to shoot well, then move on to bigger better stuff. It will save a lot of money. My first gun was a Henry classic 22. I loved and love that gun. That said, having several pistols, rifles, and a shotgun, I’m looking to get myself a 10/22 for days where I just want to shoot a ton for basically nothing. I don’t like to run a ton through my Henry. If I was starting from scratch and being practical, which many of us can’t be with firearms, I’d build my collection as follows:

  1. ruger 10/22
  2. 9mm (beretta 92/Springfield xd/Glock 19)
  3. 223/556(ruger 556/mp sport)
  4. 12 gauge (Mossbergs have always worked well for me and are budget friendly)
  5. .357 revolver (ruger or Smith and wesson)
  6. 22 or 357 lever rifle

I always wear protection inside or out, but the muzzle blast from an AR is definitely not pleasant, specially when the guy in the next lane has a crappy brake on his. The pistol caliber carbines are much more forgiving to the ears, and just as much fun.

Your first was a great beginner tool, IMHO. Henrys have a LOT going for them.

Practical????????That ONLY works, at best, for the first few acquisitions. For the majority(I suspect)of us, it quickly gives way as we succumb to wishlists and drool-inducing new choices.

Having said that, I see your list closely resembles my version of what's ideal, even if not in the same precise order.

The difference between practical and preferred is difficult at times to discern.

I found out that very same thing with my own muzzle brake. I went with a blast forward device and it made a real difference, tho it did reduce by a smidgen the brake benefit. Indian Creek had one that was pretty reasonable, and can pop on and off as desired.

That's a real puuurty rifle there! Do I see a folding stock? Cool! (New Jerksey legal? dunno,,,,,)

It WAS a folding stock before the Communist regulations of NJ stopped it with a pin.

Actually, my son has a Mosin, but shot outside, and yeah, they go boom. Can't imagine what it would be like indoors.

Damm commies, I thought McCarthy got rid of 'em all! :icon_e_wink:

My kid has a Mosin too, and it has more kick than even the 12 gauge.

That’s so true.  I love my shockwave, not sure how in any way it’s practical but boy is it fun to shoot!!!

I added a UTG Bulldot green laser to mine.  It's basically point and click now.  I was tending to shoot low from the hip, this helps eliminate the guess work.

Not a gun I ever planned on getting. One day the wife showed me a pic of one and said that looks cool you should get one. AND SHE MEANT IT.  Having never been in such a scenario, I went right to RTSP and got one before her tune changed. I do have to say that I am very pleased with it overall.  That said, not for someone new to firearms.
