Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted February 20, 2019 This may not be news to some of you, but it was to me. Last night I ordered some ammunition on-line. When it came to the page for the final tally, I was surprised to see sales tax being charged. I was unaware of this entity having a presence in this state as they are based out of NC. So I sent them an e-mail asking their justification for collecting sales tax - I asked where in this state they had "bricks & mortar." This was the response I got... Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that states may require businesses to collect sales tax from purchasers even if the business has no physical presence in the state. This is a change from the previous structure that only businesses physically present in the state must collect sales tax. At this time, we are collecting tax for approximately half of states, those which have laws requiring tax to be collected from online businesses. We expect this list to expand as other states also pass laws requiring tax to be collected. Unfortunately this is a requirement to stay in compliance with the law, and while not all businesses have begun collecting sales tax they will all have to begin doing so. We appreciate that this change may be surprising, and we appreciate your business. I was aware that there had been talk of passing legislation (I thought on the federal level) to allow sales tax to be collected on Internet purchases in states where the selling business has no presence - I was unaware of this SC ruling. I don't know if it was Murphy's doing, but you know that he is scrambling to make-up for the tax shortfall in order to finance his socialist agenda - it appears that it is being done on the backs of Internet sales - should not have expected anything less. So just a heads-up you will be taxed, and taxed, and taxed. Adios, Pizza Bob ADDENDUM: Yes, I am aware that we are supposed to pay a use tax, equal to the sales tax that would have been charged, on Internet purchases - and I'm sure that we all have been doing that, right? PB Yes, I always pay the Use Tax, and send in another check with a big extra contribution to make sure I'm paying 'my fair share'.

Heavyopp 167 Posted February 20, 2019 And how exactly are these retailers getting the charged sales tax to NJ -- How exactly would NJ go about penalizing any out of state retailer for not complying?
MartyZ 691 Posted February 20, 2019 This was put into effect on 1/1/2019. I have all my non-gun stuff shipped to my parents house in brooklyn just for this reason.

That will only work until they start charging NY state sales tax. That i will come as well. Every state is adopting or using this SCOTUS ruling to make it a state law on their own time. Just get use to the fact that you will now be paying sales tax on everything regardless of how you buy it. Food and clothes in NJ as the only exception right now, but im guessing by the time Murphy is out of office he will have changed that as well.
Maksim 1,504 Posted February 21, 2019 NEXUS rules and it goes even further and impacts sites like us. We used to be an affiliate for Brownells, but now, anyone that even advertises for them, there would be taxes and all. While bigger companies can keep up, the burden on smaller companies will be huge. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=11&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi2zrrIjMzgAhVwUN8KHZdBD3sQFjAKegQIChAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.salestaxinstitute.com%2Fsales_tax_faqs%2Fwhat_is_nexus&usg=AOvVaw108_ZmH1fL3c7BlHIe_6_f
