New online permitting system?!?

Recommended Posts

"These fees are still collected by Records personnel at Police Headquarters.  Until such time that an online means of payment can be received by the town, this step must is required and must take place before we can move forward and begin to process any firearms related applications. We apologize for the inconvenience."

At the speed that some towns adopt new technology im guessing this step will take another 10 years lol

I hope this is a at least makes it quicker.. that is until this archaic and unconstitutional process can be removed altogether.

Old bridge time frame is not fast or slow. On average they are 5-6 weeks.

That's slow.

Their law states 30 days.

Not to be a ninny but they should not be allowed to break laws while holding us to them.

Better than 5 or 6 months.

It is.
5-6 weeks is still unacceptable.  There is always a worse case.

Shit i will take 6 weeks. if that was consistent.  The best ive had is 6 weeks, my last batch of permits was just under 90 days.  Always comes down to the mental health check and how slow the state is with that

I understand but disagree with your position.

The law, their law, says towns must issue a permit/FID within 30 days.  To accept otherwise is not a good idea, IMO.  But, I'm just a cranky hairdresser.  WTH do I know.

Well yea I get that ... but let's not forget "their law" is unconstitutional crap to begin with. The whole shall not be infringed thing... 6 weeks or 30 days... im feeling pretty f*king infringed on.  :)

So now I have to worry about not only everyone at the local police department and the state police having access to my records, they will be online for everyone to view with all of my other personal information, social security, etc.  How secure will this be?  Will it be accessible during traffic stops and home visits and for health professionals?  And with one push of the button the whole thing could be shut down.  Seems suspect.

If they are going to have a permitting system at all, to purchase handguns, the state should have taken this over decades ago from local police departments and automated it.

Our current system in NJ is archaic.

You think this is being done to just streamline things?   I don't want the State taking over ANYTHING.

You should go ask Alexa (who's listening all the time) what she feels about this privacy.

If the state issues pistol permits instead of local police departments, then the process can be regularized and monitored and one lawsuit against the state can be filed if there is abuse.

Right now every municipality has its own procedure and schedule and policy, which changes every time the police chief changes...and the law is the police are supposed to investigate you - which means they can pretty do as much snooping as they want, call your employer, etc.  Every individual town has to be sued, each with its own set of facts, etc., if there is any problem.  If the town police don't like you, they currently could cause all sorts of problems for you.

Of course there shouldn't be purchase permits in the first place, but if we are going to have them anyhow, I for one would rather have a statewide system that's automated and staffed by a bureaucracy with fixed rules impartially applied.

As it is right now, if the present right to carry lawsuit goes our way, your town police will still be the ones investigating and deciding on your carry permit, with authority to investigate you as much as they want, if the current lawsuit to throw out "justified need" is successful.  Look at the form you have to fill out.

I for one would rather have the state police do a quick search of the state records and approve, then have to go to the local police station after hours (since I am working during the day) and satisfy some local town detective that I'm OK, and fill out a form that allows him to do a fishing expedition of an investigation if they don't want to issue one to me.

Alternatively, if you live in a permissive town, I'd understand why you would want to keep the system as is.  But you will complain if the political orientation of the town flips and a new chief is appointed.

If the state has to do all the work, it can definitely come to a crawl.  I live in an area with no police, so my purchase permit paperwork has to go through the state.  Where some of you get papers back in 3 to 6 weeks because your local chief of police can sign the papers, I'm consistantly at 3-5 months because State Police Barracks Commanders don't have the authority to sign off on the investigation.  The process gets started at the local barracks then gets sent to Trenton where 1 unit handles all the paperwork for people who live in areas with no local police.  This time last year they were back logged with paperwork and it was taking about 5 months to get returns and they were coming with the extension already filled out and signed because they knew they didn't want to re-approve it later if you let the 6 months run out without making a purchase.

The site says do not need to fingerprint again!?!?   Hot diggity dog

i gotta tell ya,  yes I hear you on the lack of potential privacy thing.   But I’m leaning to the side of relief from nazi type town documentation wven though it’s illegal it still happens.  Calling employers?   Bullshit like that.  And 5 month wait times?   If I have to sacrifice my POTENTIAL loss of privacy i will do it for the cause of helping my other brothers out who suffer.

      Hello all,
Some opinions please.  I am a long time NJ resident and also a resident in SC.  I spend 8 months out of the year in NJ out of necessity.  When I leave NJ I carry everywhere as I have multiple CWP's.  I have purchased many pistols legally in NJ over the years.
I was thinking about getting some new permits to pee...(my term for the Pistol Permit) but with all the BS that had been going on I was thinking about refraining.
I also have completed all the NJ CWP permit applications, but I am not sure I am actually going to apply.  I don't need to put up with the NJ BS.  To me it's insulting.  Plus with all the restrictions coming and being tied up in the courts for probably years, it may be just a futile exercise.   I would rather just leave when my house is build in SC and buy it there.  Once I switch my license to SC, its cash and carry for me.
I have the old, non-expiring FID.  What I do not want to happen is if I go apply for new permits to pee, that my FID gets converted to an expiring one and then I have to pay a renewal fee.
I did read the new regs and it looks like they are grandfathering old FID folks to the non expiring one but this is NJ...what is written in law is usually ignored by the class warfare system we have here and the horrible mentality and attitude of some of these LEO's and NJSP officers that think their personal bias is important and the sneers you get when you go pay the $2.
      Am I being paranoid?

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

      Hello,
I have two questions regarding FID application. So I have seen three psychiatrists for ADD, and while I know this is not a disqualifying factor, I do not know the exact dates or years that I attended, and mind you that I am currently 20 and attended from ages around 7 to 17 or 18. This is a problem because the application asks this, and then asks for the names and dates of such occurences. Is it okay if I state that I do not know the dates of such occurences, or if I give the date estimations of which (I do know the names)?
My second question is regarding references. I do not know any police officers well enough to be able to ask them to use them for my FID, so will two friends that I grew up with do just fine? Thank you.

Hello, new owner of a handgun in NJ. Had a question for all of you experts out there! I keep seeing all these different things online so I have an suv so the trunk area is accessible to the back seat area. From my understanding, it needs to be locked in a case and its fine to be in the trunk of my suv? Also my other question.. the ammo.. that needs to be in a separate case? Does it need to have a lock on it or can it just be a bag with a zipper?

A fellow forum was asking about a display case for his wife’s pistol I believe. So I decided after seeing some display cases for insane prices, to make my own out of more or less cheap prices.
This one will be for my Nighthawk Custom Falcon 1911.
I started out with a humidor I had when I was on a cigar kick with the club.
Humidors make perfect cases for your gun.
Why? Its designed to keep moisture in so your cigars don’t dry out. Ones that are well made have a nice tight seal.
‘But John, we don’t want to keep moisture in. It will hurt the gun’. Correctomundo! But using it to keep moisture out works too! If you are not a cigar smoker, a humidor keeps the cigars from drying out by putting a moisture pad inside. We simply won’t be using the moisture pad nor the cheapo humidity gauge they usually give you.
So lets start. One used but still in great shape humidor with glass lid. If you don’t have one, you can pick up something decent for about $50. I added a lik leather NH tag to use to open lid. They are air tight and easier to open with something to grab.

If you use a humidor, they sometimes come with a lil shelf and divider. Toss them.
Next, we added a little antique bronze clasp. 5 for $12 on Amazon. They come with tiny wood screws. You’ll need a jeweler type phillips head and a small awl to start a hole. Do not screw in without a starter hole. Also a mini pad lock with skeleton key.

Next, you’ll want something to lay in there like velvet. I chose purple velvet. Rather than buy it by the yard, I actually got 2 - 14”x14” pillow shams with zippers on Amazon for about $11...
This is a lot cheaper than buying it by the yard plus you don’t gave to sew anything. Just stuff it and zip it.

You will need something to stuff it. That is your choice. I already had a bag of poly fill from another project. You can even rio open al old pillow and use the guts.

Next is rechargeable Silica packs. I got a 25 count bag cheap also on Amazon. I chose to line the bottom of the case and also throw some inside the sham.

Once you beat it and adjust it to get in the right position, you can see how the gun sits and adjust as needed.
Next is optional and not cheap. I picked up 2 - Sensor Push bluetooth temp/humidity sensors for $50 each. One for the box and one for my safe. After calibrating them and pairing them to my phone, I inserted one into the display case.

You don’t have to do this but I’m a bit of a tech nerd so.... [emoji6]
You can also use a cheap digital one too.
This one transmits data and stores 20 points which you can set alarms in the app if moisture increases. Kind of more important in my safe but....[emoji16]
Here is a sample of the data. I just put them in so it will take time to level off.

That’s pretty much it. Outside of the sensors, its cheap, easy and looks great. You can fo crazy with it or go simple.
