Woodbridge has been doing this for over a year.

This isn’t just the background check, this is the whole application process.

Correct but you still have to drop off papers to PD.

In old bridge you don’t have to drop off anything but payment.

And they are working on a system for online payment , so you don’t have to go In at all until you pick up.

My town went to this system as well.  Just submitted for FID change and pistol permits this morning.

Both my references contacted me within an hour to let me know they received reference check emails from NJSP.  Shortly after that I received a status update from NJSP that one of the references had completed the reference check form.

So far this is looking like a big improvement to the otherwise onerous process.  No waiting for an appointment with local PD, same day contact to references via email instead of waiting for snail mail.

It looks like the only contact with local PD will be to pick up documents and pay for purchase permits.

Because I have nothing better to do on a Friday night, some interesting things from the online FAQ:

Quote

How can I check whether a municipal police department is accepting S.T.S. 033 Form online?

The online S.T.S. 033 Form starts with the ORI Number. If the concerned municipal police department is not accepting online requests, you will not be able to proceed with the form submission. You need to make sure that you are applying with the correct ORI number after consultation with the concerned municipal police department. The name of the municipal police department is displayed when a valid ORI Number of a participating police department is entered.

My emphasis added.  Not sure if your town is participating? Get the ORI number (https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/files/NACJD/ORIs/34oris.html) and try to submit an app.  If you get past the ORI field entry, then your town is likely participating.

Can I submit the Consent for Mental Health Records Search (Form S.P. 66) application online?

No, not currently. The form can be downloaded from here. You are required to complete and submit this form in person at your municipal police department. Without this, the application cannot be processed.

My emphasis added.  My local PD contact didn't tell me this, just said "It's all online now, just go to the site".

I wonder how many apps are going to sit unprocessed until people start to figure this out....

Do I need to enter my Social Security Number?

Disclosure of social security number and driver license details are voluntary. However, without it, the processing of the application may be delayed. This information is considered confidential.

My emphasis added.  Hrmm, the form asks do you have a driver's license (yes/no) and then the D/L # is "asterisked" as a required field if you say yes.  Lying on the form is a felony,  so fail to see how you can't disclose your D/L# without lying on the form.

I just applied for pistol permits online using Berkeley Township's ORI and all went well. Paid my $21. Forgive my confusion, but does this online app also do the Mental Health Background check?

EDIT>>> Disregard my question. I found my answer in FAQ section...

All applicants are required to go to their municipal police department to sign the Mental Health Check form.

The paper work I got from NJSP about this is the mental health checks are 10 years apart unless you lived out of NJ during any of those years.

Is it true they let you use relatives as a reference now?

From the FAQ link....

Is the reference feedback required for processing the S.T.S. 033 Form? top

Yes, to process the application the municipal police department requires two references from reputable persons who are presently acquainted with the applicant, other than the relatives. Not having this feedback can delay the processing. The service sends two reminder emails with the link to submit electronic feedback.

Thanks.  Someone said they changed it but I guess not.  I put in for P2P in January and the NJSP where I went didn't even mention it could be done online.

It was kind of new then. I did the same at about the same time as you. They took my paperwork at the barracks and then informed me I could have saved the 40 minute ride. But they would process it anyway. I should know if it all works out around April. That’s the average wait for the barracks I have to use.

Yeah same here.  They told me last time that all the barracks send them in to get processed at a central office in Trenton.  They said barracks commanders don't have the authority to sign off on it like a police chief of a local town.

After reading this thread, I checked my town's website.  Middletown Township started using the new system effective Feb 18th.

Step 3 of their instructions(link below) does state that you can use family members as references.  So that at least is a welcome change.

Cannot comment further until I have actually used it.

Something smells. Why in this climate would they make a change that leads to any convienance?

To squash any complaints that NJ people filing suits against 2A rights can’t pile on “and did you know my town takes 5 months even though they know the law is 30 days!?!”

I can see the logic.   Give the bone so the dog doesn’t jump on the table

      Hello all,
Some opinions please.  I am a long time NJ resident and also a resident in SC.  I spend 8 months out of the year in NJ out of necessity.  When I leave NJ I carry everywhere as I have multiple CWP's.  I have purchased many pistols legally in NJ over the years.
I was thinking about getting some new permits to pee...(my term for the Pistol Permit) but with all the BS that had been going on I was thinking about refraining.
I also have completed all the NJ CWP permit applications, but I am not sure I am actually going to apply.  I don't need to put up with the NJ BS.  To me it's insulting.  Plus with all the restrictions coming and being tied up in the courts for probably years, it may be just a futile exercise.   I would rather just leave when my house is build in SC and buy it there.  Once I switch my license to SC, its cash and carry for me.
I have the old, non-expiring FID.  What I do not want to happen is if I go apply for new permits to pee, that my FID gets converted to an expiring one and then I have to pay a renewal fee.
I did read the new regs and it looks like they are grandfathering old FID folks to the non expiring one but this is NJ...what is written in law is usually ignored by the class warfare system we have here and the horrible mentality and attitude of some of these LEO's and NJSP officers that think their personal bias is important and the sneers you get when you go pay the $2.
      Am I being paranoid?

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

      Hello,
I have two questions regarding FID application. So I have seen three psychiatrists for ADD, and while I know this is not a disqualifying factor, I do not know the exact dates or years that I attended, and mind you that I am currently 20 and attended from ages around 7 to 17 or 18. This is a problem because the application asks this, and then asks for the names and dates of such occurences. Is it okay if I state that I do not know the dates of such occurences, or if I give the date estimations of which (I do know the names)?
My second question is regarding references. I do not know any police officers well enough to be able to ask them to use them for my FID, so will two friends that I grew up with do just fine? Thank you.

Hello, new owner of a handgun in NJ. Had a question for all of you experts out there! I keep seeing all these different things online so I have an suv so the trunk area is accessible to the back seat area. From my understanding, it needs to be locked in a case and its fine to be in the trunk of my suv? Also my other question.. the ammo.. that needs to be in a separate case? Does it need to have a lock on it or can it just be a bag with a zipper?

A fellow forum was asking about a display case for his wife’s pistol I believe. So I decided after seeing some display cases for insane prices, to make my own out of more or less cheap prices.
This one will be for my Nighthawk Custom Falcon 1911.
I started out with a humidor I had when I was on a cigar kick with the club.
Humidors make perfect cases for your gun.
Why? Its designed to keep moisture in so your cigars don’t dry out. Ones that are well made have a nice tight seal.
‘But John, we don’t want to keep moisture in. It will hurt the gun’. Correctomundo! But using it to keep moisture out works too! If you are not a cigar smoker, a humidor keeps the cigars from drying out by putting a moisture pad inside. We simply won’t be using the moisture pad nor the cheapo humidity gauge they usually give you.
So lets start. One used but still in great shape humidor with glass lid. If you don’t have one, you can pick up something decent for about $50. I added a lik leather NH tag to use to open lid. They are air tight and easier to open with something to grab.

If you use a humidor, they sometimes come with a lil shelf and divider. Toss them.
Next, we added a little antique bronze clasp. 5 for $12 on Amazon. They come with tiny wood screws. You’ll need a jeweler type phillips head and a small awl to start a hole. Do not screw in without a starter hole. Also a mini pad lock with skeleton key.

Next, you’ll want something to lay in there like velvet. I chose purple velvet. Rather than buy it by the yard, I actually got 2 - 14”x14” pillow shams with zippers on Amazon for about $11...
This is a lot cheaper than buying it by the yard plus you don’t gave to sew anything. Just stuff it and zip it.

You will need something to stuff it. That is your choice. I already had a bag of poly fill from another project. You can even rio open al old pillow and use the guts.

Next is rechargeable Silica packs. I got a 25 count bag cheap also on Amazon. I chose to line the bottom of the case and also throw some inside the sham.

Once you beat it and adjust it to get in the right position, you can see how the gun sits and adjust as needed.
Next is optional and not cheap. I picked up 2 - Sensor Push bluetooth temp/humidity sensors for $50 each. One for the box and one for my safe. After calibrating them and pairing them to my phone, I inserted one into the display case.

You don’t have to do this but I’m a bit of a tech nerd so.... [emoji6]
You can also use a cheap digital one too.
This one transmits data and stores 20 points which you can set alarms in the app if moisture increases. Kind of more important in my safe but....[emoji16]
Here is a sample of the data. I just put them in so it will take time to level off.

That’s pretty much it. Outside of the sensors, its cheap, easy and looks great. You can fo crazy with it or go simple.
