I thought I would share this short video because it is a pretty showing the slow motion of a handgun being fired.  I would like to see a 357 revolver shot in slow motion as well.

How does the gases exit the barrel before the bullet?

The bullet engages the lands, but doesn’t deform enough to seal the grooves, so you get some blow-by. 

And the lightweight gas accelerates much faster than the bullet, so some of it exits the muzzle first.
