Just How Are Millions Duped By Media?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there's a number of components in the answer to that question. Some of them have been discussed on this forum. The Russia-gate hoax. Jussie Smollet. Covington high school kids etc. With that fresh in our minds, it has occurred to me how are so many (millions?) duped into believing  stories that eventually are proved fake?

One component is the Illusory Truth Effect. Read this article that deals with Russia-gate in particular. The video is generic and hosted by Dr. Derek Muller. He's the Australian physicist in the 2015 PBS documentary "Uranium: Twisting the Dragon's Tail". As far as I can tell he has no political aspirations. The video is not a political presentation, but rather psychological.

Then apply this to the topic of firearms. How many times do we hear phrases beaten to death, especially ill-defined ones. Assault rifle. Racial profiling. White privilege. Gun control. Islamophobia. You get the drift.

As long as the media propagates false or misleading information in this manner, there will be a large pool of people subject to their influence. And many of those people vote.

This is why there must be repercussions for all the actors in the last two years' debacle.

Additional: "Hands up... don't shoot!"

I asked my wife that question last week. Its amazing how easily this generation of young people can manipulated. Back in the 70's and 80's we never trusted anything told to us by anyone over 25.

Well the internet kicked the shit out of the don't trust anyone over X concept.

Quick, what's the average age of this board's population?

Unless you regard this place as overly hostile, your first instinct was probably to assume the composition of the membership is similar to yourself.

That's a easy question, most people DON'T live in REAL reality, they just perceive their reality as true, very few think for themselves anymore:

My daughter is a member of that group.  She listened to liberal professors in college, talked about those progressive lectures with her liberal friends after class, and would sit down in the college cafeteria for dinner to watch CNN or MSNBC.

Now, after watching "the Clinton Chronicles" , she is putting less faith in the democratic party.  However, I don't know if she is "cured" yet.

Yea, I got the “how couldn’t you vote for Obama” face when in college. It was the same in 2016, just insert Hillary... but was out of school at that time.

Obama... I was just called a racist. Not that I disagreed with his “Change,” especially when he never really laid down any groundwork for it... I must not be voting for him because he was black. Each time, I looked the person square in the eye and asked if they are voting just because he was black? Silence... then they try to change the subject. At that point, would tell them that if Colin Powell ran... I’d vote for him in an instant (back at that time). Stopped talking to them afterwards.

Hillary... that was a little different. Nobody actually confronted me in the same way that Obama supporters did. They gave the look, but think Hillary has too many flaws to defend. We have one guy at work that is die-hard Democrat, and my boss leans that way (his wife is, so he is...). The employee would always start with me. Was on a job out in Princeton (after the inauguration), and he started talking how Trump will be impeached within the year. Asked him for what? Just got louder, but did not answer... actually walked off the job due to it. No issue debating politics, though I prefer not to... but when you are screaming in the middle of an office park, in uniform with our trucks (completely lettered up) behind us... you are a moron. My boss almost fired him for that, but he is still the POS that acts the same way (one guy I didn’t let know I was leaving).

I was lucky I wasn’t still in college for Hillary/Trump. I almost got threatened to be “expelled” but a Feminist Sociology teacher. Always would give us rants on how women are so mistreated... always when it had nothing to do with what we were discussing. I got annoyed one day, yawned, and said something to the effect of “this again?” Started screaming at me to get out. Five minutes or so, class breaked... so I walked back in. She started down the respect road, and I quickly stopped her. Explained I don’t mind about her views, but I’m paying for a Sociology class... not Feminism 101. If she used it for her class, I’d have no problem. But she is not being paid to push her BS. Asked if she wanted to continue this, we can walk down to her department supervisor/dean... being I think both would have a view on the matter. She kind of apologized, and didn’t hear about it for the rest of the semester.

When I went for my BA, I went to Georgian Court... prior to them going fully coed (high enough GPA, male students were allowed at night and day with a waver). So, I had to watch out for the nuns, most liked me... but it was a requirement to take a women studies class. Myself, another guy, and 30 female students... plus a woman professor (two, because our first had a medical issue after the second week and was replaced). We were learning about women suffrage... and the teacher asked my view. Think I matured a lot in the time between that and the Sociology thing... “there are 31 women in this class... whatever I say is wrong.” Everyone laughed, and the discussion continued. If that was 2016, I think the response wouldn’t have been as humorous... especially there.

For the original topic, I used to watch FOX each day back when I was with my ex. Kind of got out of it when we broke up, but stopping by my parents after that, I would see them watching CBS. News cycles were COMPLETELY different! My father always gets upset watching the news... told him to switch to FOX. End result, at least for the short term... he didn’t get as angry.

Confirmation bias. Plain and simple. Most news networks these days (Fox, CNN, NBC, etc.) only report the conservative or liberal point of view of a story instead of just reporting the story. And if people watch a channel that confirms their bias, they eat it up.

Yes, but so did many of the Democrats. They were just ignored and not called on their behaviors.  It is a double standard enacted by those largely with a hidden agenda.  These people are not specifically against Trump.  They are against the Statist/Socialist agenda trajectory being changed.  They are also against Trump because he is unpredictable and cannot be completely controlled by them.   He is not nearly as compromised as most that are allowed to be put in power.

All of the news is biased.  It is all bought and paid for by the elite that have a subtle and/or not so subtle agenda.  I used to watch Foxnews and it actually helped me see more mainstream concepts.  As I learned to be more critical I realized that just as the the radical Leftist views portrayed on MSNBC, CNN, etc. there was a more subtle Statist message portrayed by much of Fox. It was a message that the "Republican" party was presenting.  I began to see how important it was to control the dialogue and the language and how important not presenting the news was as in presenting it.  True, there were some on Fox that promoted conservative values.  And there was at least that since it didn't exist any place else except for in talk radio.  Little else in mainstream media had even a marked closeness to any kind of unbias or fairness.  But I watched as Fox began to lurch more Left.  I watched as commentators like Rove and Graham and other talking heads and mouthpieces put a slight spin on and talked about points that leaned more to the Statist agenda.  For example, middle-of-the-road O'reilly began to shift Left, especially after his interviews with Obama.   I definitely saw a decline in ANY meaningful conservative commentary and ideas on "The No Spin Zone" as well as on other shows.  Fair and Balanced was definitely becoming less fair and balanced.   Another example would be the subtle ways in which Megyn Kelly started to change her "conservative" and common sense views.   And, what was really funny (in an odd sort of way) was that even the conservative commentator were REALLY presenting middle-of-the-road perspectives, and yet because of the Leftist shift those views were being labeled as "Right Winger".     And there was never any meaningful discussion about the principles of the Constitution and limited government and separation of powers, etc.   That was when I really stopped watching.  I would see my conservative parents watching and they would be applauding something Rove said or Lindsay Graham, or Shep Smith, or Trey Gouty said. They would essentially comment, "Wow, he's for us."  I would try to explain that he couldn't be when he said this contraversial thing the day before. My parents and others  would overlook "ALL THE FACTS".   I would tell them that they were in fact being brain-washed just more subtly and less in-your-face than the more radical Leftist programming on other networks.   I decided that it was NOT fair and balanced and little better than the others, especially after Murdock's children took over.   Just as the Democrats and Republicans are like playing the role of Good Cop/Bad Cop, the news media was doing the same as it reported on what it wanted to and left stuff out and with the language it chose, etc. I realized there are just two sides to the same party, a party of control and power in Washington.  I realized that We the People are NOT being represented, but rather duped and mocked.   Those people in Washington really do deserve our disdain.

Most of us want fair and balanced and honest debate.  We want the news to be unbiased, but it  is almost never presented that way.  But there is a marked difference between news and commentating on news.  News Commentators are perfectly "allowed" to put their own spin on things, as long as it is acknowledged by an educated audience  that they are in fact commentating rather than reporting.  In fairness to Fox, many of the Fox programs presented it this way, but on other networks it is NOT distinguished.   I know many liberal-framed people that take the main-stream views as being Left and possibly by choice couldn't distinguish between news and commentating on news.

Millions are duped because most of the media gets the talking points and those viewers are bombarded nonstop with only emotion and evidence that supports one side.  Furthermore, there is a marked change in our society where there is little right of passage to becoming an adult and in which people are not responsible for their own actions, which I believe deteriorates principles.   There is no place for principled views and behaviors when people are told over and over again that they, the people themselves, are not happy and that the rash actions of change, to that end that the means are justified with will bring them that utopian happiness they don't have.  Why are superhero movies so popular?  Besides being cool, there is no one really to look up to... it's all gray.  And, I am not saying that the organized religions haven't caused lots of problems, but they have done some good.  They have been replaced with liberalism and big government.  People today see that gray and have no sense of higher purpose, so they are easily able to, especially with the emotional programming, accept the pseudo religions of Statism and Collectivism.

An anti-gun individual once said to me that she didn't trust the government.  I asked her why she would want the Government that she didn't trust to be the only group armed... There was no answer.  It is like an emptiness that needs to be filled in some way...  Humans are losing their ability to think critically and maybe it is for the best that they be told what to think and believe....

NOT!

I sympathize with dilbert1967 and what he said about his indoctrinated daughter.  Imagine footing the outrageous bill for that brainwashing.   Over the summer during the amnesty I was camping with my brother.  He is a crazy liberal.  I told him I was really angry about the magazine ban and that with the unjust laws I would be made a criminal for legally obtained and legally used property.  He screamed, "I don't care!"  Then in anger he was completely serious when he said, "Don't tell me, I will turn you in!"  I could't believe it. Ever since then our relationship has been more strained.  He couldn't control or get passed his emotional response.  On another occasion I talked with my child's pediatrician.  He asked if there were guns in the house.  I told him of course there was and why didn't he have any?  He said no and then proceeded to lecture me for 5 minutes on the dangers.  I just sat quietly and then I asked him if he knew anything about them.  I then asked if he wanted to go to the range with me and learn something.  He nastily responded, "I didn't ask."   I have not been back.  I guess what really gets me is how brainwashed and unopen a majority of the people are.  My brother hates the abuses, perceived and real, that he believes he experiences in our limited and capitalistic society.  He derides the government and its abuses of power, but just as that lady I spoke with, he is completely OK with giving the government more power.  The logical area of the brain is shrinking and the emotional uncontrollable area is becoming more prominent.

Goes on all the time:

"More Mexicans are leaving our country than are coming in."

"Illegal aliens commit less crime than native-born citizens."

"Illegal aliens put more money into our economy than they take out of it/pay more money in taxes than they receive in benefits."

"More illegal aliens are here by overstaying their visas than by sneaking across our southern border."

And on and on...

Wrong Again.

Have you actually watched fox news?

Foxes "News" broadcasters are far from Pro Trump.. Some are outright Anti Trump...

As far as there commentators "Evening lineup" thats not news that is Commentary. There is a difference..

On fox its obvious who is who... You can very easily determine who reporting the news and who is giving their opinion..... Try doing that on CNN or MSNBC... you will find there is no difference at all.

Acosta is a perfect example..... He's supposed to be a reporter.. Not a commentator... In the end he's comes off as a clown.

Believe it. The Civil War divided many families against each other in both north and south, and that included killing each other.

As for Fox News being 'biased', it depends on your definition of 'bias'. In the last 50 years, being biased usually means you're not progressive.

Let's see; ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Washington Post, NY Times ... neutral.

Fox News: biased.

I'm comfortable with that ratio. Are progressives?

Fox has plenty of anti trumps on the payroll in the news department including contributors...

Some of them have spread the same likes other networks have pushed... difference is that fox is more balanced.

I do love when CNN screams about trump calling them fake news but then calls Fox fake news..

Articles like this are why I say the antis are a lot smarter then we pro-2A folks give them credit.  They know what they're doing. They've recognized that there's a group of "sheeples" that will believe whatever they're told... either by themselves or, especially, by the liberal MSM, the most charismatic force out there.   We have to be just as charismatic... perhaps even more so.

We have to start at the basics, though. We have to teach our children not to believe what they're told, but to analyze and question what they're told.... They need to learn how to think for themselves.  I think the sheeples are as large a group as they are because they don't want to be bothered with alll that "Thesis...Antithesis....Synthesis."  I recall visiting the Thomas Edison lab in West Orange, NJ, and one of the souvenirs was a card with his primary motto on it... a motto he borrowed from Sir Joshua Reynolds:

there-is-no-expedient-to-which-a-man-wil

We need to start with our kids and teach them how to think for themselves, and then teach them the value of that skill.

Its more that our education system has dumbed down our youth.... Indoctrinated them to the point that they will believe anything they are told by their handlers.

This is absolutely true.

I follow the tiny house movement, which has a big Millennial following/interest. I read some of the forums and comments at the end of some articles. It totally amazes me the basic and stupid questions these kids ask, when a simple Google search would provide them all the answers they want. They are either too lazy or brain dead without the ability to think for themselves, if information isn't just shoveled to them. It believe it's the latter.

I listen to Fox News Headlines on satellite radio. It's exactly what I want where they just go over headlines and skip the biased analysis part that all news stations do.

All major networks are biased. That's just how the news has become these days. People focus more on the news if there's shocking topics that get them angry. Most are full of shit.

Agree on Headlines,, Its pretty much just reading the news.

While there's bias in all media CNN and MSNBC do not hide it... Just as the NY Times Editorials are the same as its opinion pages...

Most people do not know the difference.

And THIS is why you are so misinformed on most topics:

Eight out of ten people only read the headline
