Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he will defy NRA, take lead on gun background checks.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he's "willing to take an arrow" and defy the National Rifle Association by pressing Texas to close one loophole in gun-purchaser background checks. LINK

Texas just turned a little bluer.

Why don't they just open up NICS to everyone?

That seems like it makes sense.  At the option of the seller, do a free NICS check online.  You either get a code saying its good. Or a message saying a code can’t be issued for the person at this time.

I don’t get why Patrick isn’t trying to get something in return beyond what he believes is a temporary reprieve on letting more of Texas or DC going blue.  If he thinks thats a win....he needs to think harder.

Make gun free zones illegal?

That’s basically what was proposed back in 2013. Buyer uses a public NICS portal to initiate a background check.  They get notified if/when it passes and is given a token. Seller uses that token at the portal to verify prospective buyer passes. Transaction completes.

Seller does not have access to buyers PI.

No info on the firearm is passed or even if the sale commenced

seller gets piece of mind that buyer was not prohibited

what’s not to like?

oh, right. It’s not a registry and it’s not a burden or PITA so the Democrats killed it.

Sounds like a good idea if you are selling to someone you don’t know, or know well.  If the dems refused to vote for something like this, it will be even more evidence that they don’t care about “violence” like they say. They just want our guns.

They will want a federal record.  But should someone let them know they don’t have one now?

to be honest, there's probably a way to do this fairly easily withOUT registration. as others have said, opening nics to everyone would probably accomplish this.

but...the facts are that this would not have prevented 90% of the shit they're saying it would have prevented. so.....no.

no more fucking compromise with these back-stabbing cock gobblers.

True. Though part of me would like to see the Republicans submit it again and get the Democrats on record and call them out  for voting it down.

Sure it could, but realistically, without registration, a person can sell their firearm without going through NICS, to someone's who may use it in a crime and they wouldn't know how that person got the gun. With registration, they can trace it back to the seller and then charge the seller for an "illegal" sale.

I'm not saying I agree with registration, just that I don't think they'd go along with this without registration. They'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone in that they'd have registration so when an asshat dem gets into office and orders mandatory "buyback", they know what everyone, who registered, has.
