Any idea how long theyre backed up in Trenton for background checks?

Recommended Posts

I stopped by my local department, Wharton, to fill out the paperwork for my initial ID card and also 2 permits (kicking myself in the ass for not getting at least 3) and the officer i spoke to told me it was alot easier and quicker just to apply online with their ORI number.  Applied once i got home, OCT 23rd, and had both of my references send their replies back the same night.  The earliest appointment i could find around the entire state to have my finger prints done was OCT 31st.  Stopped at the station the following Monday to drop off my $9 fee and was told theyll grab it when i pick up my permits.  Still waiting on my "automated responce" from the NJSP that i passed my background check, and needless to say im getting very antsy.  Have already picked out the pistol and AR im buying the day i get them.  I have read from other posts that the majority of people get the email saying they passed their background check within a few days.  The only cog in the wheel i can possible think of was 10 years ago i was arrested for a non violent crime in which the charges were dropped.  Ive paid for background checks in the past and its easily accessible information so the only reason so the wait is that since i technically have a "criminal record", 4th degree Mis which was dropped, they might just be "busting my balls".  Has anyone else had trouble in a similar situation?  I dont want to start hounding the wharton PD yet, was gonna give them another week.  Appreciate taking the time to respond.

Its only been a few weeks.   Kick back and have some patience. Realistically don't expect to get it until February. If by that time you haven't heard anything then make a polite phone call.

I know, I just love to complain about sh*t. It wouldn’t be as bad waiting for the pistol permits if I had my ID card, least I would be able to go to the range and rent without having to be with someone else.  Guess I’ll have to drag my wife there one night with me, have been trying to get her into it, she doesn’t mind me owning guns, just doesn’t seem to be interested in learning how to shoot.  Appreciate your reply, and if I do have to wait till Feb I might lose my mind, feel like I’ve watched every video online and have read every review of everything I’ve been looking at.

This system hasn't changed the fact that different Depts. and different Barracks have different waits.  Also as I understand it last Weds the did a software upgrade. No telling what that will do.

My local pd told me they issue them as soon as they get the check back from the state.  I’m sure they’re blowing smoke.. I’ll just twiddle my thumbs till then, thanks for the info.

Someone can correct me if im wrong, but; If the charges were dropped, then you Do Not have a criminal record. You would only have an arrest record, which i do not believe is even looked at or considered. Being arrested, and being convicted are two TOTALLY different things..

If 4th degree, it is not a misdemeanor. I'd guess that your 4th degree crime was downgraded to a misdemeanor. So you would have a record, but for the lesser charge. It would depend on what that charge was for that determines the FPID application outcome.

I know what your going through .. .Went through it myself back in the day.  I didnt like waiting either.. and yea without the FID or another person you cant rent.  Not sure about all ranges but I know for a fact that with RTSP the second person does not need to be an adult.  I brought by son with me a few times prior to having my own stuff. not sure if you have kids of decent age or not (I think at least 8 if not then 10 ).. but they would qualify as your second person.

Not gonna get into my criminal history, but its nothing that could be considered a violent crime or disorderly conduct.  Theres no reason i see that it could be an issue.  I know people who have things on their record worst than mine and theyve been approved for firearms.  Would be shocked if i was denied honestly.  Only thing i could think of is if they were looking at the case file to see why the charges were dropped, waiting to here back from the superior court in my county, but i was able to print out everything from my computer and seeing that theyre the state police in trenton should easily have easy access to that information.

Trying for our first right now, just got married in the spring.  Dont think theyd accept either of my animals, and doubt my sister in law would entertain the idea of borrowing my nephew to take him to the range lol.  I usually go with my old man but they just started working 7 days a week for a big push on a job, might have to "rent a friend" thats available when i want to go.

True.  Ive never been convicted of anything in my life.  I guess theyre just really backed up this time of the year with the holidays coming up.  I just want to know that theyre working on it and something isnt missing.  Id kick myself in the ass for not asking the local PD when 3 months down the road they say they didnt have a piece of information that they needed.

My initial FID and P2P took over 6 months

..... just forgot about it and keep stashing money for the other stuff. Ammo, accessories, training, targets. Ears and eyes etc....

I give you a lot of credit for waiting 6 months man, don't know how you did it.  I'm loosing my mind and it hasn't even been a month yet.  I just get these ideas in my head, so excited to have a new hobby that i'm so passionate about, that i want it now.  Unfortunately now its just a waiting game.  Trust me ill let you guys know as soon as I'm approved so you know you don't have to listen to me bitch anymore.  Was even thinking about contacting my local mayor, who just married my wife and I at town hall before our "real wedding" and asking if he can do anything, but that was before i realized everything was taken care of down in Trenton, was at first under the impression the local police department had the authority to make the decision.  I really do appreciate you guys getting back to me, have learned more in the last few days from you guys than doing my own research on other sites.

Just an update for everyone.  I got everything today, had to wait an entire 22 days from start to finish.  Officer explained they would have been done sooner if the state police hadnt dragged their feet updating their system.  Sorry for complaining.  Just purchased my VP9 and couldnt be happier.

For comparison:

10/14  Application submitted online.

10/14  All reference questionnaires complete.

10/19  Criminal history check complete.

10/26  Application approved.

11/15  Still waiting for permits to show up. 32 days and waiting.

Application through Sussex barracks.  I know the holdup isn't at the barracks.

Update: The permit gods heard my plea. They are ready for pickup. 1 hour after my post.

Back-up? What back-up?

I applied for three purchase permits on 11/8. References responded that same day. Notified that the Criminal History check was completed on 11/14 and local PD contacted me the same day. Will be picking them up today.

I think, as usual, that the local PD's are still giving permits low priority, so no matter how fast you get processed, the local PD's still are the major sticking points. I just happen to live in a great jurisdiction. I know that the permit requests have increased for my local PD. In order to accommodate that, they have gone to a rotational "ups" system. Instead of one detective being in charge of the whole process, the requests go to all three detectives in the department on a rotating basis.

Good luck with your quest.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
