Why does Jersey smell like a sewer at night?

It’s actually Spartina (commonly referred to as Cord Grass) that is open  to the air at low tide and decomposing to make that lovely “low tide” smell.

Personally, I love that smell.

The smell of ass in the morning?

It doesn’t smell like ass. It smells like life, it smells of fishing, boating, surfing, and lounging on the beach on a barrier island.

Yes, but...you can do all of those things in states that don't smell like ass.

+1.  Love is a strong word, but the bay and meadows smell like home.

Spartina grows along the shore along the entire East Coast.  The smell in NJ is nothing like Coastal Georgia.  I spent a week or so with some friends on Sea Island, GA last year.  Their 4 bedroom house, no garage was worth about $4,000,000.  It was one of the least expensive houses on Sea Island.  You are surrounded by many square miles of Spartina there.

All of NJ infrastructure operates on maximum neglect.

All the sewage treatment plants eject their waste into the various rivers to the ocean.

When the place isn't working right, or input volume exceeds processing volume, they operate in bypass mode.

So yeah.. if it smell like shit, it probably is shit.
